Isnt AAUasketball age? Why do they go by grade. There are kids like on
D squad and city rocks that are 3 years above the grade level. What I hear anyway) Other teams get killed
because, just for example, a team may have a 17 yr old on the9thgrade team. why
should that kid be able to play on an 9th grade team? Shouldn't he be like with 17u?
That's why AAU is so unfair especially in Utica. You should only be allowed to play AAU basketball if you haven't failed. If your kid isn't that bright and has failed, he should play
the grade ahead, if he fails twice, two grades ahead.
Kids from the mills who went to notre dame, same thing!!! You all get put back down a grade.

It is ok to be 15 for an 8th grader to be on AAU as long as they are no older than 15 on 08/31/2014.

Cannot be 15 yrs old and on 7th grade AAU. If you see it then protest.

The national norm is to begin 8th grade at 13 and turn 14 in 8th grade. Finishing 8th grade at 13 would be young.

Also, AAU is a national organization that considers kid's age on a national scale and also developmentally. Keep in mind Southern & West Coast kids are typically a little older and many have the option of Transition Kindergarten if they graduate Kindergarten young enough.

Not to mention, AAU allows for 1 grade failure/retention, which happens more commonly in the mid-west & south. Keep in mind a grade retention is a reality for many kids due to an extended amount of absense from school due to a move (i.e., military brats) or illness (i.e., meningitis) among others.

The truth is that by 16 years of age the vast majority of D1 or Pro type athletes are established on that track already. You typically can tell by then who has a chance to move forward. A 6-8 month gap in average age rarely changes the Who's-Who going to college or professionally to play. Also, college coaches and scouts evaluate based on grade and age. You would be hard pressed to get a coach dumb enough to simply bite off on a kid being older than his peers. Age is the first thing checked.

12u(6th grade) 13u(7th grade) 14u(8th grade). That was the old formula. A 15 year old should be playing 9th grade spring AAU ball unless he has reclassified..

It should be 1 year above grade. That accounts for 1 academic repeat for kids that struggle academically or due to an lengthy illness during the school year.

Most travel organizations are 12th grade OR 19. Fact of the matter is you better get over older players if you plan to play in college. You'll see red shirts, 13th year prep schoolers and JUCO transfers from day 1 on campus and the coach could care less if you are 17 or 30 if you are helping the team win.

Life is unfair... Baby boy is gonna need to learn to deal with it.

Red shirting etc is all fine etc, but when the kids are like 6'2 14 yrs old 200 lbs in 7th grade
playing against a 5' 4 12 yr old 95 lbs, it makes a HUGE difference. One is in puberty, the other may not be. If you fail, you play in the age!!! not the grade.

AAU Basketball Exception Rule #734

If a kid has exceptional talent any coach will find a way to get him onto his team regardless
of any preceding rule.

Sorry you are incorrect. Every player needs to provide birth cert. those a kept by the coach and are required to be available for every tournament.
