Fans of Proctor's in Schenectady, The Landmark in Syracuse or the The Auditorium in Rochester might disagree. The previous poster is correct. Many communities have historic theaters.

I was born and raised in a much larger city than Utica. I have lived here for over 30 years and it's the same old bull crap downtown issues from the first day I stepped into this community. Not enough parking, the Stanley crying for money, vacant store fronts, homeless people and the list goes on and on and on. I've seen tons of taxpayer money poured into downtown Utica to try and revitalize it. Where did it go?

Why are the area's problems blamed on the casino? Why not blame Vernon Downs too? They have entertainment and food that draws away business from downtown Utica. The businesses in Vernon have been hit the hardest and they aren't crying nearly as loud as the crybabies in Utica.

The Turning Stone came on the horizon only 15 years ago. So what kept downtown from growing during the 15 years before that. Certainly not the casino!

It's so easy to blame successful organizations when a corrupted money pit suddenly goes dry.

That's absolutely true.

It's been one taxpayer funded scheme after another for generations. Every single one was presented as the key to revitalizing downtown. Everybody shows up for the ribbon cutting and presentation of the taxpayer money but then no one is to be found when these things fail. Put the blame where it belongs. Start electing people who aren't all about photo ops and filling the pockets of friends and family.

It's hilarious. They literally have been talking about a harbor project for 30 years. 30 years!! They've been selling a Marcy project for 25 but every year it's the same thing.

These Broadway shows are fine but super expensive overhead to produce. There is so much more work that goes into these types of productions than into a concert. Even if the show is self sufficient they take up a huge amount of stage time to put on before the show ever happens.

All those days of building sets and rehearsing are days that it is NOT generating money on something else.

In my opinion I love the shows but how often do they sell the place out?

Concerts are the way to go. They load in often the day of the show and are gone a few hours after the concert is over. Leaving the place ready for another event the next day and not taking up the place for weeks ahead of time getting ready. Meanwhile the Stanley isn't paying for electricity, staff... etc.... while they aren't generating any money at the door.

There is a draw for Broadway shows. But its business you need to balance this with what will Pay the bills. We shouldn't be looking for Broadway shows to be creating a surplus to pay Band fees we should be looking at revenue from Concerts to allow us the flexibility to be able to offer Broadway shows and not make as much. OR bring in BETTER Broadway productions that do not suck.

You cant rely on one thing.

More comedians.
Less effort, less overhead.
Make Utica a regular stop for national acts.

When the rehab of the Stanley was proposed a few years ago the emphasis was on the backstage area. They said that the bigger backstage would allow them to draw the bigger shows. It did that but something they didn't address is capacity. Isn't it common sense that if you bring in bigger, more expensive shows without increasing seating capacity that the ticket prices have to go up? Is raising ticket prices the thing to do in an economically depressed area with a newer and bigger venue less than 30 minutes down the road? Obviously not because if it was a good idea the Stanley would be thriving.

In the end the Stanley elites got their multi-million dollar expansion and their bigger shows. The question now is - can they keep it?

<quoted text>I disagree totally with you . I does matter who is in that position . Running a newspaper and being DJ does not qualify you as a major concert promoter dealing with major recording acts and managing a concert venue. The Stanley needs a successful concert promoter from outside this area that has a major success record in major venues. This area cannot afford some local wannabe whose intentions are good but has no clue what to do. Getting donations and grants only keeps the local wannabes employed and does not fix the problem. Unqualified people in places they should no be in has destroyed this area.
son ya dumb. Uncle Ray and the wampum tribe have the real promoters locked in and have agreements as to how soon and how far away a band can play after or before a t-stone show. so shat ap ya dumb... the tribe has these guys pockets full so they wont book competing places.. ok. the brewery, munson williams the landmark in syr, utica aud, syr. on center clubs... they all take a scalping at the hands of chief ray wa-hoo.... ya dumb.. dumb.. thats all ya are..

We've all read your musings throughout the years. You seem to be the quintessential Monday morning quarterback. The type of person who (is now or has been) a State or Federal employee. All kinds of perks and benefits on the backs of the taxpayers (retirement, vacation, sick days, health insurance coverage) NICE! You've never had to make a payroll....worry about business utility cost....healthcare insurance..Taxes...etc.Let's do this.OK? Just imagine that as of today you've been duly appointed the director of the Stanley. There is no reverse or contingency budget, you have ZERO dollars to work with. What would you do right now to make the Stanley a viable destination for an entertainment seeking crowd. How do you fund it? Where does the money come from? 2609Tell us!
