Some people I know don't like the casino because of the smoking number one.
People said the same thing when the built the casino. Who will go to Verona,NY. Middle of a cow field.
Number two Senator Bruno got tax payer money to help expand the Saratoga Springs Convention Center.
They didn't worry 25 years ago about having attractions. They just did it. No corporate stores were open in Saratoga back then. Other money can come from the room tax and memberships. It could be funded through a private group. Maybe the city could put out a request for proposal.
The Harbor could be a location for a convention center.
You would have been the person that said the world is flat so let's not cross the ocean. Or maybe yup have another motive why you don't want this to happen. It will happen. The only question is how long will it take.
Moron, the thing that PAID for the casino in the cowfield was A GAMBLING LICENSE.

OMFG these people are so teensy-minded. Yes a convention center is just what oootica needs. Lay off the public budget grant funded dreams, lower your taxes, start making your law enforcement REALLY accountable and ditch the prison economy and 65% taxes to pay for public dirtbags. How old are you? Do you have fcking EYES?

You are positively out of your fcking mind and saying " the naysayers said the Eiffel Tower couldn't be built BUT LOOK!!!" you should put away the crack pipe dreams and stick to getting utica a toenail clipper factory to tax to fcking death.

OMFG who let the colleges plug in the internet to their dorms wtf?

Everyone that I talk to that comes to visit Utica loves it here. Do your research on Saratoga. 25 years ago Saratoga had 0 going for it. The downtown had empty stores . Do your research. You talk about the mineral water? Have you ever drank it? It's awful. Every town in the country has problems with crime. So,let's not try to create jobs. Saratoga has homeless walking their shopping carts up and down the street. They have problems with graffiti. If you think they don't have a drug problem in Saratoga you are really living in a cave. The city was built on the convention center period and end of story.

Don't take my word. Go sit outside of their convention center and watch where people go during the break. They go eat and shop. The city of Saratoga Springs could not support those stores alone. Go ask their businesses what would happen to them in the convention center closed. Who's clueless!

Your argument is based on which came first the chicken or the egg.

The business leaders in Saratoga had the balls to take a risk and build a convention center. The result has created massive development by investors. By hotel chains a mix of corporate stores and mom and pops and restaurants. They put their money up because of the convention center. Ask the hotel managers.

25 years ago the race track ran for four weeks that's a total of 24 days. Today they run 40 days. What hotel chain in their right mind would build based on 24 days of business? They survive because of the convention business. They have four more hotels in front of the planning board now!

Clueless? You say your a tax payer but you don't want to see the area move forward. Your happy with the status quo? What ideas do you have to help out the area?

It's obvious he has not one positive thought about ANYTHING. Poor guy. Somewhere along the line hatred and contempt attached to his soul and now a life of bitterness he leads. And he will continue to spit and spew like he matters.

Move forward Utica Pride. Your optimism is refreshing and at least your conveyance if thoughts are logical and well organized.

As for Clueless, well, Xanax is a miracle drug that might suit you well. It will slow you down some. Look into it.

UticaPride you seem like a nice enough guy with the right intentions but to believe that Saratpga was built on a convention center is just foolish. The track celebrates 150 years this summer. The mineral waters and spas have been attracting people for as long. It's been the playground for the rich and famous for a long time. The city center is a result of all of those things not the other way around. There are businesses that have been Saratoga landmarks for much longer than 25 years. I have concert ticket stubs from SPAC that are older than that. Saratoga Lake has been there a while. As I stated, I grew up there and I'm there all the time, there's nothing in an article that can convince me otherwise. Has the city grown in those 25 years, yes, but not because of the convention center. Look at the schedule of the center, there's nothing on there that's alone is going to drive a city's economy. Saratoga hosts thousands of people every weekend on it's own merit of entertainment', shops & restaurants. To say that it had nothing going for it 25 years ago is nuts.

I never stated that Saratoga was perfect. I'm well aware that like any city has it's issues. My point is that it's economy does not stem from the presence of a convention center.

Again, all moot because there's no way Utica ever catches up to Turning Stone who can boast that they're also in the center of the state.

The harbor? You've been there right? Seen it? Another well intentioned but misguided attempt like the Rome Airport and Nano chip fab that have sucked up hundreds of millions of dollars with no return to the taxpayer.

Typical Utican response. Let's assume a feigned air of superiority and attempt to dismiss a relevant and valid point of view by trying to paint of picture of the individual that's not at all accurate. Apparently I matter enough for you to attempt to dismiss the validity of my points. It's the small mindedness like yours that truly keeps this city back by trying to ignore realities and engage in relevant exchanges of ideas and information.

So,is you answer to sit around and not try to make something happen? The businesses of Saratoga didn't sit around.

I read the article it talks about the city being run down before the convention center and they couldn't attract visitors. It's from primary sources. One source was the president on the chamber. I think that speaks for itself.

Read it again. The city was in a rut. They had to compete with the new mall on exit 15. They could not attract visitors." you could shoot a cannon off at noon and you would not hit anyone. You are in denial. You disagree with a professional primary source? You are just plain wrong. Unless you are going to tell me the president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce is a liar.

By the end of World War II, Saratoga Springs had fallen into a somewhat decrepit state. Empty storefronts were common, and some of the city’s historic buildings, whose street level remained occupied, had upper floors visited only by rodents, rather than businesses or residences. With some building owners unable to make payments, arson became a viable way of remaining solvent.

It was a far cry from the Victorian jewel that Saratoga Springs had been as a destination for the upper class through the 19th century, and the hometown heroes returning after achieving victory in World War II wouldn’t have it.

Yep. You know me. Nonny nonny boo boo sticks and stones. Whatever man. I have not dismissed the validity of your points but rather embraced the validity of others. What I find offensive is the manner in which you present. I recognize some of what you say as on the money but is there not any positive thoughts to share? Your position minus the apparant hate combined with others with thoughts opposite of yours might actually come up with something positive that could make a difference.

I do not ignore realities and do contribute to relevant exchanges of ideas daily. I keep an open mind and do what I can where I can. I am not a contributing factor that keeps this city back and my mind is far from small. I'm here and choose to be. The constant negativity outweighs any logical thoughts. Why not add positively by working with others to help with solutions? Lord knows our leaders continue to miss the boat.

False. Most traveling from the west and south go through Syracuse.
Route 81 goes to the tug hill plateau,Watertown,Fort Drum and 1000 islands not the Adirondacks. Please look up your geography.

I suggest you look up your geography. There are plenty of roads that are well traveled east into the adirondacks off of 81. "Gateway to the Adirondacks" is a myth. A slogan sold by utican politicians to make you feel better about yourselves. If you don't believe what I'm saying I suggest you spend three different saturday mornings watching traffic going north on 12, 81, and 87.
I never said 81 or 87 doesn't have more traffic. Tell me which road do you take to get to the Adirondacks from 81?

My point on comparing Utica and Saratoga is they had a time in their city when nothing was going on. That didn't stop them for trying and look at them today. That's my point. I provided facts to back it up. Others have argued that Utica can't be proactive and that we should continue with the status quo. I am showing examples of what another upstate ny city did. We can too.

Also,I am not saying I want to be like Saratoga either. I am just asking for a convention center or at least get a conversation going about it.
I think We can do many things better then Saratoga and turning stone. I feel both are missing the boat on the family dollar. Do you want to bring your kids to turning stone? In a smoke filled environment? What does Saratoga have for kids? What can we do to attract families? Let's look at the top markets for families across the USA and see what they are doing.
It would be worth putting a group together to look at it.
Also, I thank the other posters for at least getting the conversation started. Your objection have some merit. Others will have the same objections. You can't change the thinking and perceptions over night. However,we should start trying. Try to get a piece of the pie in this multi billion dollar industry. Please don't give up on Utica.

To,answer your question about roads off of 81 heading east. Without a map I think it's 11, 3, 26, there's a boatload of them.
11 runs along side 81, 26 is north of Rome. Route 3 is way up north at the end of route 12 in Watertown. Please look at a map, because I have one right in front of me and have no idea what you are talking about.
