When will Oneida County Tourism get serious about having a convention center instead of giving out bed tax money foolishly? Also, where is the Mohawk Valley Chamber on this issue? The downtown business of Utica that always cry for public handouts but have failed to create a B.I.D. or pull themselves by the boot straps and do something meaningful? I think Downtown Utica is the only major city in NY without a business improvement district in the state. Boy could they use a convention center.

I think the Gov is dead wrong on the casino idea. Someone is going to be losing money, plus it breaks up families. We need the Mayor and Common Council,County Executive and County Legislators our State Senator and Assemblyman and Congressman all behind this issue. Plus, any business groups Mohawk Valley Edge,Genesis group and anyone else I am missing. The time is now. Let's not waist another minute. The last two rounds I feel we could have done better with our regional council and CFA's that we submit to the Gov.
Bottom line we need to organize and start having a serious conversation on having a convention center in Utica,NY

Cuomo's office says tourism generated $16.6 billion in wages in 2011. That's a lot of money. Let's get our share of the pie.

It's black and white. No grey area here. 16.6 billion on the table. What is the draw to other areas?
I don't think Syracuse or Rochester or Buffalo are that much of a draw. The big draw is we are the center of the state. We have great golf courses in the area. We are the gateway to the Adirondack. We have great art, food and culture.
Most state groups, clubs organizations meet once a year. Not to mention the untapped sports market. Look what the boilermakers brings in alone. We can do much better with soccer,Lacrosse, basketball,Gym nastics and the list goes on and on.

You people are amateur sports obsessed consumers. Nobody wants to come look at all you public parasite mouthbreathers running you amateur porta potty rental races and stupid "events".
You have no "culture: your whole area is based in fkng hype and lies like "tomato pie" being anything but a cold wet pizza, all nobodies in your amateurish sports and no artists to speak of unless you over hype joe bonamassa to death some more.

Get fucking REAL central new your stick to what you losers do best- Warehouse humans for jobs and to impress yourselves with your siren lights and make up new lies about how AWESOME your shitsuckhole is as if you're the center of the universe.

Utica has ALWAYS come up short and fake and accepted the substandard life. You can't even hang powerlines in that town it;'s the welfare capital of the world. Dream on we'll keep right on laughing at your vapid little pipedreams and delusions.

By the way the boilergasm is just wheezing along breaking even and about to take a real hit in attendance too so at least try to hold up something other than another crip NFP a thon thing.
Those people are too stupid and uncreative to do anything but repeat their minor NFP successes. I just can't believe how helplessly pathetic you people are. Nobody is giving you 16 CENTS out of that 16 billion imaginary NY dollars anyway. You have to have an ACTUAL attraction not a wooden fort and bunch of fat white pasty pale people running because someone told them it makes them big famous and cool. OMFG the dreams the downs syndrome people float!!

As an outsider why the hell would I ever come to utica? For a conference? Ill go to albany, Syracuse, or the turning stone. You have your head firmly placed up your backside if you really think tourists and outside business' would go there to visit or for a conference. If Utica even attempts to waste a dollar on this it will make that stupid sign they're building look intelligent.

Was looking for an honest conversation about the topic. Didn't figure how many non thinkers and haters they would have on Topix. Honestly could care less about their opinion. Any one with half a brain or who can think outside of the box, please chime in.

http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2013/05/04... . Saratoga only has the race track 40 days a year. What is the attraction the other 325 days? Our Varick St is 10 times better then their Caroline St and we have a world class brewery on ours and vodka distillery.

If that were so, the discussion would be more along the lines of,"How can we adapt to handle all this tourist traffic?" rather than, "How can we get people to come here?" . See the difference?

25 years ago when they built the convention center in Saratoga their downtown didn't have much going on for it. The only thing they had was a very good social science college called Skidmore which is not in their downtown. The business community ie chamber of commerce and tourism department worked together and today you see what has happened there. They built it and they came. They didn't even worry about parking. It would be a nice problem to have,"how to handle all the tourist traffic". I would be happy to see the leaders in this area at least start talking about it. We should have a public debate.
The funny thing is everyone complains in this area and wants less taxes and more growth. However, when we have an opportunity for positive stuff to happen, everyone shoots down the idea.

Dude you're kidding yourself. To try to compare Utica to Saratoga based on the seasonal presence of a racetrack is misguided and fractional at best. There are so many other factors. How about SPAC all summer long? Varick St better than Caroline? You've never been there or are in total denial. There's nothing here to attract or entice an event or convention planner to hold an event here. They'd lose on so many fronts, in particular in reputation. Nobody and I mean nobody in their right mind would plan an event here with the goal to attract people here.

What so great about Caroline St. Gaffney's? Give me a break. I have been there and nothing special. The only thing they got going is doughboys at Esperantos. For those who don't know it's a type of food. Varick St blows Caroline st away. They don't have Saranac Thursdays. The only thing killing Varick st is the stupid vendors. Who in their right mind would invest in a restaurant when you have to compete with them. I think the city is penny wise and pound foolish for collecting money from vendors.
SPAC how many people go downtown from SPAC? Most people I know tailgate in the parking lot and then leave. I don't think meeting planners pick Saratoga because of SPAC? Who's clueless?

Do some research and show me some facts. What stores and restaurants were in downtown Saratoga 25 years ago? What was the attraction then? All they had was an old city hall a local bank and a post office. The only buildings with any architectural value. Utica's downtown in contrast has more interesting buildings. They have a height restriction on their buildings. It is very boring. Many places were boarded up.
The only difference is they had a can do attitude,we do not.

Doughboys? You think people pack Caroline St because of doughboys? How about Saratoga City Tavern? And part of what makes Caroline St better is what it doesn't have that Varick does; crime, bums... Saranac Thursday? Who cares? it's the same shitty ass local bands week after werk and year after year and I'd hardly brag about the trash it brings out. I've never seen cops have to set up a command center on Caroline St.

I know a bunch of people that go downtown after shows and before shows for dinner. How about the fact that downtown Saratoga looks nothing like Utica's. it's populated with great resteraunts & shops with a mix of upscale national chains.

How about the fact that 45% of the surrounding communities aren't on social services?

How about the fact that their chamber of commerce and business leaders have a clue unlike ours locally?

How about the fact that the track, SPAC, downtown and the city's history and reputation make it a highly marketable package? Want golf? How about Saratoga National?

How about a lack of air transportation? 50+ minutes to Syracuse. Saratoga is 20 minutes from the Albany airport and Albany is 10 minutes.

How about the fact that they have a multi billion chip plant with another on the way as well as a thriving and growing technology economy?

The reality is that Utica has nothing to market to create a draw and nothing that in a million years will overcome it's standing reputation. There's no way that Utica can compete with Capital Distrct be it Saratoga or Albany or anywhere in between.
