This whining about teachers is incredible. Easy targets, I suspect. Wake up, whiners. Teachers, NYS workers, firefighters, cops, prison guards ALL have great pensions. Don't like it? Get your GED, move out of you mommie's cellar, and go to college. You CAN do it, whiners. You have a choice. This is America, whiners.

I heard superintendent Karam say that spending in the Utica school district is about $5500 a kid and that's much lower than the state average. The proposed Utica school budget is $140 million plus this year. There are 9390 students in the district. I got that from http://www.education.com/schoolfinder/us/new-... When I divide $140 million by 9390 I come up with $148989 per kid. How do you explain the difference?

I think you misplaced your decimal point. You should have calculated $14,909.00. I think the actual cost per student is around $15,500 per student in Utica and the state average is around $21,000. There are some districts downstate that are spending over $35,000 per student. The average teacher salaries in these districts is around $137,000 per year. This is where your state tax money is going.

My mistake. I did add an extra digit. it should have been $14,989. Sorry about that. Our numbers are close. So what explains the difference between what we come up with and what the superintendent has been saying? The number that he uses is less than half the $15K.

What about the legacy pension and retiree healthcare costs that are costing more and more millions of dollars every year?

"When the Utica Board of Education approved retiree health-care benefits for a large group of teachers 16 months ago, it had no idea what the added burden to taxpayers might be.

Now, officials do know — and the price tag is staggering.

For its assets to keep up with its added retiree benefit obligations, Utica’s school district should be setting aside $14 million more per year than the $5 million it budgets for retiree health costs now, according to an accounting form obtained by the Observer-Dispatch under the Freedom of Information Law."

It Was Negotiated. Not Sure What GRoup Got That Benefit 16 Months Ago Though. Not Teachers. That Was Agreed To @ 5 Years Ago When Insurance Rates Were Stagnant. Voting For The Last Contract Was Supposed Top Save Teachers. It Saved About 15 Of The 55 That Out Was Supposed To. There Have Been No Raises In Last 5 Years. The Steps HaveBeen Frozen At The Same Rate That Was Negotiated At 10 Years Ago. The TaxBase In Utica Sucks, Teachers Pay Taxes too. ThaT Means We Are PayingSame Taxes As Everyone Else, But NotMaking Any More Money. The Whole System Sucks And Until The State Decides Top Find Education Instead Off Funding Education For Prisoners LikeMighty Cuomo Wants.

with common core your saying 4+4 equals 5 and push the gay pedo agenda, AGW, UN globalism among other genocidal nonsense. Personally I wish all parents could home school and just shut down the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute obey system..Otherwise this will be the worst generation yet.
