The new buyer of Kunkel will finally put an end to the money losing UFD. It will be good news for Utica in the long run as they will save a lot of wasted money. Bye bye UFD ambulance service. All state of the art technology will now be available for people, which UFD can not afford.

Just how is the takeover going to put the UFD Amb. service outta business? I would like to see it but all the politicians are backing up UFD, even our state clowns.

The same way that Budweiser buried a large number of small breweries, and Walmart the small stores. Large company goes into an area and undercuts the cost of the product. They can afford to do it because of their other branches carrying the temporary loss. Once the new company gets a stranglehold, the established one goes under, leaving the new one. Lower charges, better updated equipment, faster response times with a fleet of ambulances, less cost for insurance companies and County Medicaid/TAXPAYERS, AND more firefighters to FIGHT FIRES, all adds up to the downfall of the UFD's TWO ambulances.

They are inept. If these politicans really knew what was going on behind the ufd ambulance and how it was run they'd shun it like the plaque.

Only problem is UFD is primary transport agency for Utica. They are dispatched automatic. For someone to use these cheaper services (if they are cheaper) they would have to request that ambulance company. Doesn't happen often due to who uses and abuses the system are low to no income residents with Benefit cards.

Nah, soon as the call goes in UFD gets dispatched. It's basically a monopoly.

You are correct. I'm guilty of that 3 years ago myself. Called 911 and requested "An ambulance". Didn't think to request Kunkel, which I was aware to do, but in an emergency, who thinks?
This past fall I was gassing up at the Fastrac in N. Utica and a Kunkel ambulance pulled into the M&T Bank across the way. The passenger attendant went inside. Shortly afterward, a siren approached coming up N.Genesee St, and a UPD car turned down Auert Ave alongside Fastrac. Minutes later same thing happened, and then a 3rd one came. I glanced over and saw the attendant entering the Kunkel rig, just as another siren approached and it was the UFD ambulance. Kunkel's rig circled around the one ways and then drove down Auert Ave at normal speed. This all over a period of more than 10 minutes. When I finished, I drove down as a looky loo. Turns out there was an accident involving a Corvette on Herkimer Rd across from Price Chopper, with injuries. WKTV News reported it with video that evening. Kunkel could have been there within 1 minute, but more than likely the same thing happened as when I called 911. That should be changed, using GPS units in ambulances to send the closest.

One fact the ootica pols fail to comprehend or they just don't give a phuck....the UFD ambulance service is bringing in about $2M/year to the city. But every nickel of that 2M is going to the UFD to pay for OT staffing. None of that is going into the general fund.
