Sex offender suspected in W. Utica beating death of freelance editor
Body discovered Sunday

----------
UTICA —

Walter "Sebastian" Bak had installed several extra locks on his door at the Historical Park Apartments building in Utica, a close friend said Thursday.

After being assaulted in the past year, as well as harassed and stalked, the 66-year-old openly gay man feared for his life, according to Ray Jadwick, a New York City author who has known Bak as a freelance editor for about seven years.

“He was a harmless, though outspoken, member of the gay community in Central New York,” Jadwick said.“He was perfectly happy, but he had been targeted in the past and he was more concerned for his safety than he was worried about what other people thought of him.”

For reasons that still remain unclear, Bak was beaten to death sometime last week within Bissell's 717 Spring St. apartment.

Police officials have not released the victim’s name, but Oneida County Coroner Mark Bentz confirmed that he performed an autopsy Tuesday on Bak and ruled his death a homicide due to “blunt force trauma” head injuries.

Bak, a graduate of Whitesboro Central School, appeared to have been dead for days before Utica police discovered his body inside Bissell’s residence near Varick Street Sunday afternoon, Bentz said.

Even more days would pass, however, before an anonymous caller contacted the O-D Thursday morning and asked why nothing had been written about “Sebastian’s” death.

Bak’s death initially unclear

Bissell was identified Monday as a “person of interest” in Bak’s death, and he was taken into custody soon after for a parole violation, officials said. Although Bissell has not yet been charged in Bak’s death, police said they anticipate arresting Bissell as early as today.

“It’s definitely a homicide, but at this point we’re conducting further investigation as to whether we’ll proceed with a murder charge or a manslaughter charge,” Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara said.

Police officials did not inform the public about the city’s latest homicide until an O-D reporter inquired about the incident Thursday morning.

The reason for keeping quiet was simple, police officials said: They did not realize at first that they were dealing with a homicide.

“We did not have any autopsy results at the time, and there was no evidence to indicate there was any foul play that had occurred,” city Public Safety Commissioner Daniel LaBella said.“It would have been premature and irresponsible to suggest otherwise until we knew.”

Police were first alerted to Bissell’s Spring Street residence after “suspicious” activity was reported in the area, LaBella said.

Once Bak’s body was discovered inside, initially it appeared to be an “unattended death,” LaBella said.

“But we didn’t stop there,” LaBella said.“We just didn’t take it at face value as an unattended death. After further investigation and aggressive police work, it was found to be otherwise.”

Juggling two homicides

LaBella credited Utica police Sgt. Scott Cifonelli, as well as investigators Terrence Oczkowski and Bryan Coromato, for handling the case.

This explains jadwick a lot too. Love how they are supposedly editors and "authors" yet haven't been paid to write anything in their lives! HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA! The delusions must run in the family!
