There use to be(about 15-20 years ago a little bread store in N Utica on Trenton Ave.It was on the corner right before you get to the dairy isle on the road that led to the backside of st peters and Seymour playground. They had not only the best bread but incredible garlic pizza type bread and tomato pie.Anyone remember,it was there for years?
Dear Jamie, I think it was called Diorio's Bakery, right? I used to attend St. Peter's school and agree that they that bakery always had fresh tomato pie. Before it was a bakery, though, it used to be one of the best candy shops I'd ever been to. I can't remember the name of the candy store, but I thought it began with an S. It was like a Utica's version of Willy Wonka's because they had everything and anything a kid could want.

The candy store later became the bread store and were both located on Coventry Avenue not Trenton Road. The candy store was Shequin's (the owner's name was Moe Shequin) we also use to call the place Moe's and everyone from Kennedy HIgh School in the '70 use to hang out in front of the store. The bread store went in many years later and was owned by Frank Raspante (The little Italian guy). He is still around but was getting up in years and he sold the place. The lady who bought it got the receipt from him and she made the place more like a bistro resturant but she closed it up after a couple of years and took that great tomato pie receipt with her. The place has been empty for a few years now. Raspante's had the best tomato pie!!!

I wouldn't give the Zenzillo's a dime. Their product may be good but Jerry has screwed his family out of the business. Everyone knows it and why you people continue to support this crook is amazing.

Star Bakery, hands down.

Napoli's is edible in a pinch - but:

1) their crust is too hard... it practically explodes into crumbs when you bite it.

2) it goes too high around the outside... so high that if you try to eat the crust first, it causes the sauce part to flip up and hit your nose.

and...

3) the sauce is just too deep.. it's too deep.

You know I'm right.

Star Bakery crust is more like Gregorio's crust. Mmmmmm.

napolis/tonys hands down. Grew up on it and still love it to this day. Star, daniells, rintronas, etc all are dry and no flavor. Moved away a long time ago but still have it brought to me by my in-laws and grab a box when I get in town. Delicious.

Jerry runs the body shop. He does not own the bakery. Get over your problems emotionally. People support the bakery because they put out a great product and do not rape people on price. The grandson that runs the bakery is a great kid. He works hard. Nothing was given to him, he earned it!

the mame of the place you are talking about is Pasquales. use to go there every day for lunch. turnovers, fresh bread, huge cookies, tomato pie, canoli"s" didnt realize what a delight it was growing up next to pasquales until i got older and talk about it. now i live in beautiful sunny south florida and will always have a place in my heart for the culture of Utica. just dont miss the weather taxes and politics.
