Last time I lived there, the Hunter House had some of "Utica's finest" walking around yelling at telephone poles. Utica in the 60's went to hell as the city did. Of course Riverside Mall took away from downtown but the brainstorm behind the hunter house and letting some of "Utica's finest" walk the streets took away any chance of people WANTING to go downtown

Woolworth's, Neisners, Monday night shopping, The Boston Store. Those were the good old days before the mall ruined downtown. Utica was a nice place to live back then.

The Hunter House didn't open unti the 70's.
In addition to the shops named by hahabama, I remember Thom McAn's and Miles shoe stores. Lauer's, Doyle Knowner, J. B. Wells just for starters. I use to love to go downtown on Monday nights the place was like shopping in New York City. Anyone remember the cop Giruzzi who directed traffic on the busy corner!

The suburban shopping centers like Whitestown Plaza and New Hartford Shopping Centers were the end of downtown -- free parking versus meters downtown. Downtown was pretty much a shell before the state hospitals let everyone out during another budget crisis. Supposedly they were to go into residences in the community that would monitor them so they'd take their meds, etc, but most of the residences were run by unscrupulous people who took the money & let their residents run the street. Hunter House was supposed to be a step up, but didn't work out that way.

That being said, downtown memories from the 60's include Woolworth's lunch counter & bakery dept, Boston Store having the first DOWN escalator in town, Ball's Card Shop & their risque magazine section, the White Tower, a bunch of men's clothing stores: Wicks & Greenman, Maher Bros, Kahn's, Oberman's, Brill's, & another one whose name eludes me, but which moved to NH Shopping Ctr., women's garment places like Foedish, which always made me snicker because it sounded like "fetish"... The Brock Building, the 258 Building... Miss Auert at the Gold Dome... And I could go on for hours.

There was a rumor that, at the end of the day, the little old newsstand lady, Helen Hoffman, got picked up in a limo & taken to a home on the Parkway.
