If you lived there would you be happy and social?

It's funny... the region keeps telling people that moved here that "oh we're so friendly! That's one of our best assets!"

OH UTICA... so silly and naive.*ruffles hair*

No, try shaking hands with a stranger in Frankfort, NY Mills, or Schuyler.

AND the funny thing is, the friendliest people I've met here aren't from the region. They were displaced from Texas and moved here because of EADS.

No, I suppose I wouldn't. Downtown Utica looked like an abandoned movie set for Saving Private Ryan. And the surrounding suburbs were pretty boring also. But the angry and miserable people were the biggest turn off. Whenever I tried to make friendly small talk with people, they just looked at me like I was crazy. A lot of people even gave me stink eye when I smiled and said hello to them. I have encountered mean and cold people in various places, but Uticans were by far the meanest and coldest.

I moved to Utica from Ohio in 1999 and I have to agree. The first week I was here a big black girl wanted to fight me because I smiled at her when we passed on the street. She couldn't understand the concept of friendliness. Then her boyfriend told me she was just being jealous because I was skinny and thst pissed her off even more.

A few years ago I moved about 25 miles from the city and people are a little less defensive but I still find the general attitude to be cold and angry.

Let me reply in the typical Utica fashion:

"If you hate it here so much, why don't you just LEAVE? Oh wait, you're leaving? Why??? Come back! There's so much to love!!"

"You think WE'RE not friendly enough? What about this... Maybe YOU weren't friendly enough. You need to volunteer and give away money and let drug dealers live in your house for free because you're obviously not friendly! YOU'RE THE PROBLEM, NOT US."

"The rest of the world is JUST AS unfriendly, so don't bother traveling and looking around."

"What? We're plenty friendly! I don't know what you're talking about.*punches you in the face*"

"Think positive, and people will act friendlier."

"I've never subscribed to 'Happiness Magazine' nor has any of my Utica friends. You're judging us with arbitrarily by looking at other cities. Why don't you have a bowl of Chicken Riggies and THEN tell us that we're not friendly? Huh? HUH?*attempts to strap blinders to your head*"

Does anybody ever watch the Bank of Utica commercials and think, "I wish I had some of whatever they're smoking"? Those commercials are realllllly stretching it.

It's a Utica thing. Arrogance? Paranoia? Lack of social skills? Uticans want YOU to say hello to them first. Welcome to "The Handshake City!"

It used to be a friendly, productive, beautiful town with a future ---and then Rufus Elephante, mob boss, imported a ton of very low life, corrupt italians that were/are good for absolutely nothing except theft, fraud, crime, adultery, murder, nepotism etc. They bred and cheated there way through the decades until all the respectable white people left in disgust. The last fine moment in this town was probably at the turn of the century when we were still free and clear of the mafioso and black hand influence of a bunch of low brow, low achieving italians.
