Bring on the bar exam - but NYS already requires a bachelors, a masters (within 5 years of attaining your bachelors), and three state tests that are four hours each.

Oh, and all teachers who attained certification after 2004 have to prove they have completed 175 hours of professional development every five years for the remainder of their teaching career.

Take the tests and get back to me. The first two tests are not too hard but the third is tuff plus it costs a good penny. Walk A Mile In My Shoes

NYS teachers are already the most certified of all the states. Our nys government demands so much from them plus more education than is necessary. It's just a way to grease the pockets of the test makers and of course the government with all the registration fees for tests and licenses.

They must be really old then and should retire! Now teachers must have their masters. I don't know when that law was enacted. Does anyone?

I can guarantee you there are plenty of teachers teaching in the Utica City schools that only have their bachelors.
It is a NYS REQUIREMENT to have a Master's degree within 5 years of your first teaching position. Any school in any NYS district That is on the State's list for improvement CANNOT hire a person unless they meet those requirements.

Could it be a way to keep all these not for profit non property tax paying colleges full?

Because you are paid a LOT less if you start teaching with a bachelor's....easier on school budgets.
