Can someone explain pensions to me?

The CO thread got me thinking.
Pensions must be great, but really, why should someone continue to be paid for a job they haven't done in years?
It just doesn't make sense?

Why don't you do some research before you come on here and ask a stupid question. K? Thank you.

Low skilled workers received pensions because the work was generally physically demanding and wore down people's bodies to the point that they could not work anymore.
Teachers and the like received pensions in exchange for low pay. They have to earn advanced degrees and could get better jobs elsewhere.
Politicians get pensions because they can.
