Judged: 1 1 here is some info about tithing. Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were to give 10 percent of everything they earned and grew to the Tabernacle/Temple (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:26; Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5). In fact, the Old Testament Law required multiple tithes which would have pushed the total to around 23.3 percent, not the 10 percent which is generally considered the tithe amount today. Some understand the Old Testament tithe as a method of taxation to provide for the needs of the priests and Levites in the sacrificial system. The New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. Paul states that believers should set aside a portion of their income in order to support the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). |

Is there really nothing about tithing in the new testament? |

In Luke 11:42 he says, "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." In Matthew 23:23, which includes the comment from Luke, additional words are reported and Jesus declares that the Pharisees are omitting the greater parts of the law, which are judgment, mercy, and faith. He addresses the issue of Pharisees and tithing once more in Luke 18:12, by telling a parable in which the Pharisee brags, "I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess." Jesus ends the parable by saying "Everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." "What Does Jesus Say About Tithing?" eHow.com |

Judged: 3 2 1 Assuming the church has 100 members, each of whom make $50,000 per year, and assuming 10% goes to the church, that equates to $500,000 per year. Assuming that since it's a "church" (debatable at best, but that's another thread) and doesn't pay taxes, that means that there's close to 1/2 million dollars coming into it every year. Does the maintenance on that compound really require that much of a yearly investment? I know it's New York, but still... Are their "charitable works" amounting to whatever is left over or does the "excess" money really go somewhere else?(rhetorical question - I don't need an answer) Despite what the bible has to say, if it looks, smells, and tastes like a scam, it probably is. This isn't a matter of providing for the "needs" of the priests, as the bible suggests - it's a matter of giving them a lifestyle that's far superior to anyone in the congregation. Talk about twisting what the bible says to fit your needs - that's pathetic. |

Judged: 2 1 1 Why do you even bother commenting? you are an atheist, this has nothing to do with you, you give your tithe to the saloon and adult book stores, mind your own business and stay out of Godly thinks of which you have no understanding. |

Judged: 3 3 2 The real question is which of the following do you belong to: A. A church goer, who is currently giving 10-15% of their income and doesn't want to feel (or look) like a fool B. A church "spiritual leader" who is living it up on other people's money and doesn't want their lifestyle threatened There's nothing "godly" about getting ripped off (or ripping people off). That's why I comment. If what I'm saying is unjustified, then tell me - where's all the money going? |

Judged: 3 3 2 Why do you even care if you are an atheist? were does your money that you spend at the tavern and adult book store go? The tavern owner and adult bookstore owner drive new cadillacs, and live in big houses, so dont worry about it if it doesnt affect you. It should be no concern of yours at all since you are an atheist anyway, trouble yourself with something else and dont worry a bout this issue. |

Judged: 3 1 1 Ripping off members of the community is everyone's problem. If there was a burglar in the neighborhood, you wouldn't ignore them just because they didn't burglarize your house. And making stereotypical remarks about me doesn't make your argument any more sound. If I go the bar and pay for a drink, I get a drink - I don't get promised a drink in the afterlife by the bartender who then pockets the money. I'm just curious as to why the "church" would need so much cash...perhaps you should be as well. |

Judged: 1 1 I dont go into saloons or adult bookstores so I dont care what they do with the money, if you are worried about how other people spend their money perhaps you should call a church and ask them, so then maybe you can get some sleep tonight. |

Judged: 3 2 2 Wow...would Jesus have approved of your comments, you hypocritical little snot? Awful defensive you're getting for such a SIMPLE question...I wonder why?(actually, I don't...I have a pretty good idea why) But then again, NOT questioning is much easier isn't it? It's much simpler going through life like sheep, rather than asking tough questions like "why do I blindly give them my money?" If you're too DUMB to have asked the question ALREADY, I'm not sure that I would have taken your answer seriously anyways... But then again, what do I know? I'm just some stupid atheist who doesn't believe in Santa Claus...er, I mean, god. |

Judged: 2 2 I have belonged to Redeemer for almost over 16 yrs. At NO TIME have they asked to see my tax records, wage statements or mortgage. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying. It's REALLY that simple. You don't have to believe me, that's up to you. They do teach tithing but it has never been "force fed" to the congregation. As a matter of fact, on numerous occasions, you will hear the pastors implore the congregation members to NOT tithe if they feel pressured, etc.". Again, anyone who gets on here and says differently has a hidden, wicked agenda. Be careful of the people who would claim such things. What you DON'T have to be careful of is a church that constantly gives back to the community like Redeemer does. "No god" asked "Are their 'charitable works' amounting to whatever is left over or does the 'excess' money really go somewhere else." Let me give you just a couple of examples... Redeemer Church annually gives away 250,000 boxes of food to the hungry.(you read that right). Redeemer Church set up the Compassion Coalition that sends this food out as well as MILLIONS of pounds of food that go overseas and to stricken areas like Haiti. Redeemer Church is almost finished rehabing a house so that it may be GIVEN away to a refugee family. Redeemer Church sends missions teams on short term missions trips to places like Romania, The Dominican Republic, and Mexico. These missions trips are used to build churches, help in orphanages and clean up the surrounding areas. Redeemer Church gives away THOUSANDS of bookbags EVERY YEAR to children complete with pens, pencils, etc. They do this through the Utica school system. These are but a FEW of the works that Redeemer Church does without asking anything other than what the Bible says, tithing. Yeah, you're right... sounds like a real "scam". lol. Now, I ask you... who should you be afraid of? The local church does these things? Or the anonymous posters on here that would try and fill your head with gossip? These dregs of society will no doubt pounce on this post and say such brilliant things. I can't hardly wait to see the intellect spew forth from "No god" and others who will do such noble things as picking on my spelling or grammer. lol. Should be fun. Redeemer may not be for you. It's not for everyone. I never said it was. But do yourself a favor and certainly don't take the word of "No god" and others before you decide for yourself. |
