3D printers - Will Background Checks Be Required?

Chuck Shumer said just last week - "a fully operational handgun was made legally using a 3D printer. The weapon was composed almost entirely of plastic, meaning it would not set off a metal detector."

Are background checks in the future be required to own a 3D printer or will these printers possibly be outlawed in NY State?
Nope

Can't stop them. You can even make more machines once you gave one up. It's called bootstrapping.

An assault weapon could be created using a 3D printer. I feel they should either be banned in NY State or require licensing and a background check to own one...

Never happen. Cats out of the bag. Anyone with a 3axis cnc bed can make one by adding a heater head. You might as well try to regulate paper printers to stop counterfeiting and false docs. How's that working out?

The beauty of this is that its a complete end run around morons in suits trying to regulate it away. It won't stop people bent on evil so good luck! Meanwhile they are fun creative and pay for themselves in months.

This is when 3D printers need to be controlled and licensed. They are currently in their infancy and regulations and licensing need to be imposed. These printers can make firearms which can not be detected by a metal detector and must be regulated. There will be no serial numbers on guns made by these printers and will be impossible to trace...
Oh well

Oh well. They are already out and will not be regulated simpleton. This leaves you right back to square one at the problem you should have addressed in the first place. Education and defense of yourself. That, and stop pissing people off and you should be fine. You can't "regulate" your cowardace away you have been hanging your ass in the wind from day 1 of your life I'm proud of you now how did you get to be so cowardly?

Good luck with all the regulations. There's a whole bunch of other afraid cowards mad about them too. One is Chuck Schumer who will talk about whatever he can to scare you wimps but will never talk about his own term limits or penchant for teenage dudes in his life as "interns" and all.

NY politicians such as they are and all. Have fun with all those laws, I'll have fun helping people who want to create for a living do so without wimps, upstate ny luddites and do-nothings interfering with now meaningless "regulations".

I have the files for the clips on my desktop to email around as a joke BTW. Want a copy? Can you run .stls or should I use Polytrans to convert it straight to G-code for ya?

Wow. We require background checks and a permit in NY state to have a pistol but the criminals will soon be able to make their own pistol which cannot be traced with a 3D printer. Go figure....

Here is a test firing of a gun made with a 3D printer which uses a common nail for a firing pin:
