Loved Dellers. Wish there would be a good German Restaurant around again
The German food was very good, as were the fish fry Fridays! The Dellers are related to me, and my grandmother worked in the kitchen helping out until she was into her 90's. Bob Dellers wife Joanie, aka Sissy, would always pinch my cheeks. Utica had a ton of places with excellent fish frys. Not much of that here in the midwest. Seems German restaurants also went by the wayside here, and none in Omaha come even close to Dellers. Nice family as well. Uncle Stanley also used to run the Mayfair in Marcy (now the Maennerchoir). All kinds of food there, from Italian to Polish. Those were the days when catering and banquets meant "plenty"-- and it was quality as well.

All the past restaurants identified earlier truly represented some of what made utica a recognizable city. Our population was much greater then and the city had viable business and people who believed in utica. The current atmosphere in the city certainly is not what it once was but there are a few restaurant owners who take pride in what they offer. The city is primed for a renaissance it is my hope our city, county and state leaders see the potential for a rebirth. The status quo and recycling ineffective leaders needs to change before the city can change. It's a cause and effect scenario. It was fun recalling the past, thanks for the thread,

Here's an obscure one. Carlo's Pizza. It was near the A & W Root Beer place on Albany street near Culver Ave.. There may have been a liquor store nearby or attached. Still the beast pizza I've ever eaten.

I loved Big Al's and Scamardo's.
What was the name of the Italian restaurant on Oriskany Blvd across from the old Grossmans Bargain Outlet?

Omg! Thanks for the memory! The second place I drove to with my first license at 16.

Wish more threads were like this, they are nicely nostalgic. We have lots of problems here, but the history of food in this town was always a strong point.

My earliest restaurant memory was dinner at the Imperial, where my Grandfather was in a caricature(one of many on the wall of regulars)..it was located in the middle of Oriskany Blvd.
Near Gerber's and it was on the other side of the Bus Station..the Seneca Street location is where they moved to after the redo of Oriskany Blvd.
Probably Utica's Finest Steakhouse for the 20 th century

Nash's probably the best Italian for years.
Kohler's and Deller's best of the German (are Germans too smart to do restaurant business, lol because good German food is missing here) Long gone.
Sunny Hunny was the chicken king
Red Onion in New Hartford Shopping Center, good and decent German
the Index Restaurant on The first block of Blandina (where State Office Bldg)
China Inn then it became Utica Sporting Goods (block below the Stanley)
Suretta's on the busy corner, near Hotel Utica..classy Italian.
Grimaldi's when the Grimaldi family had it
Pescatore's for sure for Steak Sandwiches
Fireside Inn in North Utica..then we thought "romantic"
Hillcrest Inn at the top of Deerfield Hill..what a view before the trees grew up
The 1/half on Middle Settlement Road before it was Ling Fongs
Keg'n Cleaver
Trade Winds..we thought Polynesian was exotic
Graffenburg Inn (corner Higby over the county line)
I am sooo old.

I do agree Burger King is probably the best they have. A family member went there and walked out of two separate restaurants because apparently uticans and filth mix pretty good. If she looked at that 'pukitary joes' dink hut wop slop dive she would have collapsed LMAO!

they never ever once cleaned the kitchen there. as a contractor I went in and had to close the kitchen after they were gone, because of the fire hazard and health codes. they must have paid off the health inspector to get a pass.

ONE SURE THING ABOUT UTICA-WE HAVE OUR SHARE OF IDIOTS AND MENTAL MIDGETS, AS SHOWN IN THIS SITE!
THE STATE ALLOWED ALL OF THE MENTALLY IMPARED TO LEAVE THE BRIGHAM BUILDING WAY TOO SOON!
THEY ALL NOW OCCUPY THE CITY, AND HAVE AN OPINION EVIDENTLY!
THE PROBLEM WITH SITES THAT ALLOW JUST ANYONE TO POST!
THEY MUST BE IGNORED!! AND TREATED LIKE THE PEOPLE THEY ARE
