This is a Bullshit law. Firefighters are paid with TAX DOLLARS from the city and County, but can live someplace else and not pay anything back to the city that give them a pay check

It's the biggest joke going. They all live in the suburbs. Same suburbs protected by volunteer fireman any way. Joke

you people have to get your facts straight before you start sounding off. For your information it is a state regulation and has nothing to do with the city's ordinance or with Chief Brooks. State law exempts firemen from having to live in the city they are employed by. Reason given is that firemen(unlike police officers) live right at their assigned fire stations when on duty which is 24 hour shifts. The city can not over ride the state's law.
If I'm not mistaken former Mayor Hanna tried to fight the state on this issue and lost the battle.

Under state law, firefighters employed by cities with fewer than 1 million people must live in the county in which they work.

The city also has a poorly enforced law requiring city employees to live within city limits. State law, however, trumps city law.

Earlier this year the state Legislature passed a bill introduced by Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, D-Utica, and state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, requesting the exemption.

The bill is modeled on an exemption for Albany County, Brindisi said.
“I'm pleased the governor signed the bill,” he said.“It brings the city's residency requirements into line with similar upstate counties.”

There are at least four firefighters who live outside Oneida County, and rather than push forward with a protracted legal battle to force them to comply, the city asked the state for an exemption.
