If the taxpayers cant see how EDGE is spending the money, why should they get any money at all? Vexation almost stops my breath. I challenge EDGE to demonstrate their worthiness. Where, pray tell, are the results?

In Henry VIII, there is a verse that reads: Such a keech can with his very bulk Take up the rays o' th' beneficial sun And keep it from the earth. EDGE is hoarding the tax revenue, and impoverishing the residents of Utica and Oneida county. EDGE is fat with everyone's tax dollars, thumbing their nose at open government; concurrently, the economy withers on the vine.

The state sales tax is 4 percent. Let's hypothisize that the state takes 4 percent of everything you buy in one one year. The state then gives the money to EDGE and they put it in a hole in the ground. Everyone follow me on this? the hole in the ground is the "chip plant" The next year the same thing happens. What you get, is a cumulative deficit of 4 percent of the areas Gross Regional Product. Everyone gets 4 percent removed from the economy and it is deposited in a hole in the ground. The hole in the ground does not produce any revenue whatsoever. Is everyone still with me? Do you see where I'm going with this?

A deficit of 4 percent from gross regional product is detrimental to businesses and consumers. A deficit of 4 percent that happens perennially is detrimental cumulatively year after year. If you take four percent from businesses and consumers year after year, and the money goes into a hole in the ground, the damage is cumulative and permanent. 4 percent removed from the economy year after year has slowly crippled the economy. Putting the money into a pit and calling it a chip plant does not reverse the economic damage of compounding 4 percent economic subtraction.

This is why EDGE is filled with non profits. Profit isn't the purpose of EDGE. That's why the money is never returned to the economy. The money is used for the benefit of non profits. That's why the claim concerning SUNY intern jobs at the "chip plant" is of higher priority than the economic subtraction caused from the 4 percent sales tax.

Check this out. If our region had the 4 percent tax proceeds returned to the regular economy rather than putting it in a hole in the ground, the SUNY students would likely have jobs as opposed to internships. This is only one probable outcome. You would think the smart people at SUNY would have studied economics. Think of it like a tree. If every year you go out and cut off a limb, after 15 years of doing this. What does your tree look like?

Graft

I chose the tree metaphor because the idea of grafting works perfectly. The idea of sending state income tax and state sales tax to Albany, is that they take this economic yield, and return it somewhere onto the economic tree. In botany, this is known as grafting, you can graft unlike plants onto the same tree for example if the branches are of similar size and composition. You must take care to affix the branch to the tree and protect it from infection and bugs. It also must be done in the right season. To accomplish this grafting in Albany, we pay some representatives hundreds of thousands of dollars, to redistribute our money for economic decvelopment. In new Hampshire, their economic redistribution is done by representatives that work for $100 a year. New Hampshire has a much lower unemployment rate than NY. New Hampshire also has no sales tax. Steve Dimeo makes more than the entire legislature of New Hampshire, and it is our region which yields less. Our money pit has no tree and yields no fruit. And we pay Albany huge sums for this.

New Hampshire representives are vocal and return phone calls. Seems New Yorkers pay EDGE small fortunes and they refuse to comment. They are hiding the money like it was theirs. Guess what Steve, EDGE et all, it's not. EDGE is actually a command economy similar to economic feudalism. What EDGE is doing with the chip plant is kind of like constructing a moat. The castle can no longer expand and you're going to need a bridge to get out. In NY, this bridge has a toll. Try and move 1000 yards in NY without shelling out money to pay taxes. This is what New Hampshire would call the antithesis of freedom. Can you dig it, Steve?

I understand, but I stand by my original claim that the chip plant will never happen. I also think Utica has no money. I think the governor is running for president next election and is using this tech campaign to buttress his own political career. There is no doubt in my mind that the region has been taxed to oblivion and has no Economic future whatsoever. That's why young people and most businesses leave, I write a lot because it won't matter what is written here. The economy is just too far gone. Your politicians can tax themselves to their natural end.

EDGE is such an appropriate name. There is no center, no substance. You can't see it, touch it, lift it, throw it, grab it, explain it or determine its usefulness. There is no whole to edge, just a circumfrence; like a circle. Like running around in a circle. EDGE is an enigma. We don't know how much it costs, but we know it is a lot. We don't know how the money is spent, we just know it went somewhere. We just aren't sure where it went but it is gone. EDGE has been with us for quite some time, I just can't remember there ever NOT being an EDGE here. What would it be like without EDGE? Why don't we try just one full year without EDGE to see what happens. We know that having EDGE means nothing. What would NOT having EDGE mean? Let's try it next year. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

OCIC was the precursor to Edge, I think. It seems to me some fatazz was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to teach DiMeo how to operate.

Superficial understanding you have here....the original poster was correct in his reference to 70's/80's....GE and the base were just a final nail, not the beginning of the problem, which actually started in the 50s......lagging with no major university, losing out on major highway construction, etc. All because Utica had the wrong people in charge who then proceeded to drill it into the ground from the 50's to today. So shameful.
