No it's just said that for a police man to put his life in "danger". And thy have to go through strenuous training why do they only get paid 6000 more than for someone collecting garbage?

I wonder if the Garbagemen sit around and think about garbage all day too? Like crack stupid jokes about garbage, threaten people with dumping garbage on their property maybe... I wonder if they dream about garbage and have a whole lingo and verbal shorthand for garbage? Do they act like they're Airline Pilots or Fairy Architects or Professors about it? Or do they leave all that garbage at work and not let the stink permeate their attitude and fibre like they should?
What I want to know is, if Garbagemen are statistically more likely to be killed or injured, why do you pay them less than the cops? What say the Garbage Man Unions and their massive lobbies and Garbageman's Benevolent Associations say about this affront?
What do the Policeman's Belligerents Associations have that the Garbageman's Benevolent Associations don't? LMAO! See the problems with all the decades of herotalk and copaganda? Now you fucktards in upstate are broke, stupid, overtaxed, jobless and dirt poor paying for that mindset and it's close close cousin - "Welfare".
Enjoy your liberal nannystate of takers thanks this is always fun to see from outside the little snowglobe of NY.

The vast majority of police academies are at community colleges. They are a certificate course run by the state department of law enforcement. Therefore, they are held at a public college. You do not major in being a police officer. Community Colleges are the most logical place for police academies to be. They are centrally located within a county. The provide accessibility to all residents. The instructors are local LE performing training as a collateral duty. They are not part of the college faculty.

States do not determine the salaries of local cops, local government does. Not all departments start at the same level. One part of Florida may start at 28,000 (Stark). Some start at 70,000 (Monroe County). Unions, COLA, and competition have much to do with which town pays what.

Many cops get more than the base pay for their jobs from mandatory overtime, working security details, and educational incentives.

For the most part, garbage men do not work for a municipality. If they do, it is not their sole duty. They are usually part of the DPW and do other jobs as well. They are almost all union. The bulk of them work for private companies like Waste Management. Since they are private and must absorb the cost of transporting garbage and managing a huge fleet they control what the workers get for pay, not the local government. However, the company pays well in the event of a worker getting injured on the job. That is the contract they have between management and the union.

For LE, pay is usually determined on a comparison to similar departments, in size, COLA, and median area income.

It is a very relative evaluation to determine if cops are overpaid or not.

As far as the nature of the work, it is dangerous. Much more so that most jobs. Just on a basic level without considering actual police work, cops are at a higher risk for injury. They spend a great deal of time in a car and as we know car crashed are a leading cause of death. Also, there is a huge risk associate with the job through the nature of the clientele. Cops deal with a less that desirable part of the population. The risk for contracting disease is great.

Pensions? Every government job has some form of it.

Why do cops have good pay and benefits? Because they have lobbied for it and most people do not want to be cops, but for the benefits.

You pro-obamacare should be 100% on board for this system. You are essentially supporting the same thing, government managed health care.

Bottom line, they work for the government that hired them. The rest is just gravy.

Then you can apply for a job as a Policeman for UPD and if you are extremely qualified, you just might get hired and go thru a rigid Training Program for months. IF you pass all the requirements and are actually sworn in as a UPD Officer, then you can find out just what their starting salary is.

Until you can accomplish all of the above, it is none of your business how much each one of these brave and intelligent Officers get as their starting pay.
Brave and intelligent? More like corrupt and lazy.

Just look at the website www.seethroughny.net . Click on payrolls, then cities, search through utica, then UPD. you can see every officers name and how much they've made. Now, don't forget to add the pension, and benefits parts they don't pay for. Just add about 16% more on to the number that displays and there's what they make.

eg...

Mark Williams (whoever this is) for the year ending 2012, made $130,345. Now add the additional 16% for insurance premiums, pension, and 401k match. It comes out to $151,200.

The total payroll for the city was $120,056,854 for only 2286 records.

The pension cost is closer to 100%, you need to almost double what they list as what they made last year. You could not fund their medical and pension for only 16% more. Their pay and benefits are outrageous and unsustainable.

The citizens of Utica have many choices, one choice there is not is cutting salaries already negotiated. The only thing that can be done is cut the compliment down. The city will lose the Court case on show up pay which is clearly in the contract. That means a retro check will be in my bank account for 3500 in a year just in time for a vacation to the Bahamas

So we have to OVER pay cops to stop crimes?
That is stupid, because cops do NOT prevent crimes.
That is NOT was law enforcement cots, it is what the unions have demanded and the politicians gave into. Cut the cost in half and people would still get the same amount of protection. The only way to prevent a crime is to carry your own weapon.

Actually it's easy to see the trend is going in the other direction- The police have HAD all the praise, bennies, pensions, funding, toys, costumes, media attention and still the poverty and ignorance continues. The cost of the "law enforcement" pretender-class has broken your state.
Hiring more takers and not attracting more makers assures your hole will continue to get deeper blind man.

According to Forbes Magazine NYS is one of the precious liberal democrat dytopia nannystates that now has more people on welfare than they do working. Welfare being outright assitence or working for the public sector. You're no visionary at all unless you count nostalgic hindsight. Cops and prisons and the lack of education and real jobs are what put you where you are. 65% of your taxes go to pay for the bearded lady show you call Public Safety. You can't deny that, your welfare roles only cost you 5-7% of your taxes. The fkng crackheads don't rob you for thousands 4x a year now do that dumbass? You keep thinking uneducated grouchy racists in uniforms will save you? Then you write the check for the people still there who see it for the charade it is. You'll take about another 20 years to finally get this, I can tell by the comically righteous attitudes of denial and incredulity here. But the proof and results are all around you NY.

Now STFU crying about your inefficient misdirected "law class" and choke down another shovelful of bullshyt and a tax increase... Cuomo, Destito and all the rest of the career suckerfish in the Public Parasite Paradise are more than happy to feed you.

Another thing - Right wrong or indifferent that war got RESULTS and had an actual fucking story arc not "FAIL NY" "FAIL NY" "FAIL NY" "FAIL NY" for decades! YOU can write the check to protect YOU from zealots and sociopaths for yourself too! At least the armed services get the ugly work DONE for 1/3 the cost the UPD heroes would charge you for same if you can see the comparative differences and how lopsided they are.
I swear, it's SOO obvious how fcked up that whole area is with their "Government Job Luv" that you just know the only people that even TRY to defend it are the very parasites themselves because any objective outsider can CLEARLY see the host/parasite relationship very easily when they look at the raw numbers. You need to reign in your knowitall public sector because your life support machine itself is about to pull your plugs.
