A new business in Griffiss will be developing drones in Oneida County with cameras affixed to them. Will they be spying on us from the air? What's your take on this ?

Of course they'll be spying on the public. What do you think the drones are going to be used for? We are the guinea pigs that will be used to debug the machines before they are deployed nationally on a larger scale. Let's just hope they have the bugs worked out of their nav systems so there aren't too many innocent deaths from crashes in populated areas.

Soon we will have radar units mounted on our rooftops to detect these invasive drones. Or miniature heat seeking missiles to take down these information gathering machines!

You are eerily correct. It is 1984 come to roost.

If I catch any of those drones hovering in my backyard, I will shoot them down with my pellet gun.

Chill. This is mostly BS anyway. Numerous interests already have the formatting and method for controlling drones AI mixed in with real aircraft this is just a redundant political football and tax dollar grabfest. Just like the nano thing nobody has plans to "make" anything there it's just groups deciding on the rules. Ya gotta love the news going ape over this this is blase already and a good moneymaker for some people. The real end result here will be a little card you have to stick on your private drone to coordinate anything you're doing safely with the rest of the crap flying around up there including planes and helicopters.
This work is basically already done, again this is the slow crowd going through motions predicted 12 years ago and need to all get on the same page. This is almost the same as the nano group. They aren't "making" any product they are gathering to asses and write up a roadmap for a process they must all use despite being in competition with eachother. That's how you know there will never be a real foundry at SUNY Marcy beyond classroom level. They really don't need it and will use it less and less as their own footprints come on line.
Nobody is spying on you think of it this way, this is so you can have your beer delivered to you. Nobody wants to watch fat old people screw so calm down and let them do their thing. Just think.... BEER!

I would be a little concerned

The pilot of an actual plane is going to do everything in his or her power to keep from crashing, because they are strapped in! Short of ejecting, if the plane decides to make a smoking crater somewhere in Utica, the pilot is done for.

With drones, this might not be the case. Although I wouldn't accuse drone pilots of being negligent or derelict in their flying, a guy sitting in a recliner somewhere in Colorado probably won't have the same pressure to keep his plane from crashing.

Also I love how the Utica-area media reports any new industry coming to CNY as being built from the ground up. Let's face it, the populace in Utica is simply not educated enough to accomodate the next Boeing or Grumman.

All that Griffiss will get is what they did with the aviation technician jobs - the airliner equivalent of your local Jiffy Lube grease monkeys!

Just like when Fyberdyne buys an LED board and makes a frame for it... they tell the OD that they build the display and the OD glowingly passes it right along. Utica is the BS capital of the world. If they tell you the skys blue you'd better check cuz something's up!

Watch when one is hiding at tree level with a radar gun checking your speed and a trooper is waiting to hand you a ticket. This is the goal and money maker that will pay off the program. We will have the first hand enjoyment of these money makers. They show you a ridiculous picture of some drone bringing you a package. I couldn't stop laughing at that. The real uses will be a tool of big brother to watch over you and make CASH but of course the Public safety always a first.
