AGREED!! I've never said anything different. For me, its like this. I appreciate things I cant accomplish, like creating music. I can cover other peoples creation, and that to me takes no talent. I never said those people who do play covers cant PLAY, Ive said they lack creativity...which is what I appreciate more than anything about music.
I have to disagree with you on this Joe. If you don't think it takes some talent to replicate many different styles of playing in the course of 35 to 40 songs a night, then we're not even in the same discussion. If you think that some guy who can barely play his instrument, is more "creative and talented" because he's in an "original" band, as opposed to a cover band musician who is covering many different styles and replicating the playing of any number of "original band musicians" during the course of his/her gig, then to continue this conversation is pointless. And again, just because the guitar player or singer in an "original" band, that doesn't mean that they themselves were the "creative" force in the band and wrote the material themselves.

As a musician who has played in both original and cover bands for the past 30 years, I'm amazed at the lack of respect cover bands and musicians get. The bottom line is this. If the original bands were writing material that people wanted to hear and their musicianship was top notch, none of them would have a problem filling clubs when they played. I get tired of hearing "original" bands promote how great they are, only to then go to show and find out that they were lackluster at best, both performance wise and material wise.

I wouldnt try to compare a polished player who plays covers, versus soem hack who just picked up a guitar. My stance, comes from working with several local AND regional unsigned bands all NY state and even a few beyond, and watching them struggle to fill a place not because their ability or creativity is lacking, but because closed minded people have yet to hear of them so they dont give them a shot. They'd rather pay to hear a cover band play music they can hear on the radio. While I DO agree, that everyone can prefer what they like, I just think its sad. The covers being played had to start somewhere, and there are to many closed minded people in this area to support the talented creative musicicians and help them with their "start"

P.S. Because of my love for music and peoples creativity, I pay attention to what local original bands are playing where. Then, I try to find them on the net so I can sample their music and see if they are worth my time. I wish more people would practice this. Again everyone has a choice, AND I have seen some GREAT musicians who do play covers. My issue is more so with the people who continue to go see them while not giving creativity a chance, more so than the people who choose to play them.

The thread is "Underrated" drummer... Everyone knows who Kelly is and knows he's good; those who chose him missed the point.

The obvious choice here is BRYAN ZAKALA.

No one else around here plays like him. The locals who attempt to play metal don't hold a candle to his speed, technicality, creativity, consistency or precision.

He's underrated because Utica contains one of the worst metal scenes I've ever been around, and his talent goes severely under appreciated.

BRYAN ZAKALA RULES.

Shoulda gone to the EC Friday night. Not sure what your opinion is of Tribal Law but I'll assume you've heard of them....but I doubt you have Ruination. Their drummer JR is very good as well. Why not help us to build the scene back up? We'll be bringing bands from all over the state.

Back in the 80's there was a drummer who played with Alpha Centauri, can't really remember his name (Rick or Dave maybe). Totally aware and adaptable to all musical styles. Never knew what happened to him. Obviously older now but just curious if as to what he is doing now, if anything at all. His form and style really stood out. He obviously was seriously into his craft.
