I have to disagree with you on this Joe. If you don't think it takes some talent to replicate many different styles of playing in the course of 35 to 40 songs a night, then we're not even in the same discussion. If you think that some guy who can barely play his instrument, is more "creative and talented" because he's in an "original" band, as opposed to a cover band musician who is covering many different styles and replicating the playing of any number of "original band musicians" during the course of his/her gig, then to continue this conversation is pointless. And again, just because the guitar player or singer in an "original" band, that doesn't mean that they themselves were the "creative" force in the band and wrote the material themselves.AGREED!! I've never said anything different. For me, its like this. I appreciate things I cant accomplish, like creating music. I can cover other peoples creation, and that to me takes no talent. I never said those people who do play covers cant PLAY, Ive said they lack creativity...which is what I appreciate more than anything about music.
As a musician who has played in both original and cover bands for the past 30 years, I'm amazed at the lack of respect cover bands and musicians get. The bottom line is this. If the original bands were writing material that people wanted to hear and their musicianship was top notch, none of them would have a problem filling clubs when they played. I get tired of hearing "original" bands promote how great they are, only to then go to show and find out that they were lackluster at best, both performance wise and material wise.
