The problem with wrestling today is that it has been unmasked for what it really is: a bunch of gay guys who aren't out of the closet for whatever reason (denial, religious hypocrisy etc.) and want some excuse to grapple with men, much like they metaphorically grapple with their sexuality

Yeah, that's why numbers are down. The sport is gay.

Sounds like someone is pissed that he has to hide his own sexuality. I mean, you know you are into men, so you call people and things gay all the time hoping that makes it not true, or at least, maybe people that hear you won't think your really turned on by men. You'll figure it out some day. Good luck.

Anyway, wrestling is by far the toughest HS sport. Numbers are down because kids aren't stupid. They rather run indoor track and eat pizza than risk getting their ass kicked one-on-one in front of everyone.

Wrestling has a marketing problem. Kids will take the easy way out unless the sport is sold right. Numbers can go back up because kids still want to be tough. Instead of "make weight and hope to get to the section finals" wrestling should be "intro to MMA."

You covered this nicely. I love it when someone brings up the "gay thing". It's ALWAYS someone who hasn't got a clue, and hasn't got the hair on his a$$ to step onto a mat and go one-on-one with an opponent, with nowhere to hide.

You are quite right. Wrestling is a lot of hard work, followed by more hard work, followed by lessons in humility, followed by more hard work. Hard to convince a kid these days that this is a recipe for future success.

Yes, kids seem to have a fascination with MMA (over something like wrestling) but that's because most of them have never been punched in the face repeatedly while being held down...but if the MMA aspect is what it takes to revive the sport, I'm all for it.

bar none.Coach doesnt select varsity team. Wrestle off to see who wrestles varsity. Team sport, but yet individual as well. No crying to mommy or daddy if you dont wrestle varsity. Win the wrestle off. Best sport teachers character work ethic, respect and all other positive attributes.

stop with the toughest sport out there and best conditioned athletes. Most of the wrestlers I see are a bunch of midgets who couldn't play a real sport bc they aren't athletic enough. However, most of the heavy weights are lineman on the football team so I will grant you that. I laugh at all the midgets in the post standards ALL CNY wrestling team which comes out in the March.

The problem is that the coaches only wrestle their kids and the kids of their friends.

Nonsense. If there is a hs sport where politics takes a backseat to merit, it is wrestling. If you don't like that the coaches kid starts at 177, beat him in a wrestle off and take his spot.

Try rock climbing bitch. How is wrestling hard to hack and anything they dont teach you in A-school? Yeah I couldnt hack grown fat guys watching young dudes in shiny tights either when I was a teenager so like most we steered clear of the queers. "Clint" LOL!

The problem I see with wrestling is that you have adolescent teens still in their formative years cutting weight. I know most anyone today could afford to lose some weight, me included, but not a growing athlete.
