(This is a copy of how I responded to Cassaundra directly on the story)

Cassaundra:

Typical. You make the assumption that being a journalist gives you a special role with regard to your opinion vs those of the people.

You characterize Topix (a competitor to your company) as "riddled with untruths, exaggerations and ignorant accusations against local residents" as if the posters on Topix were not also of and by Uticans.

Let me point out to you and your journalism professor that the first documented anonymous speech in America was Ben Franklin's "The SIlence Dogood letters", and that the tone and tenor of the newspapers in the first days of the Republic was something that our founding fathers would recognize in Topix. Check out what Hamilton and Jefferson had to say about each other:

http://www.youtube.com/user/ReasonTV#p/u/52/Y...

According to Quantcast, your publication gets approximately 80k visitors from the Utica area, whilst Topix gets about 32k from that same DMA. So in just your city we are about a third of how large you, a dedicated local newspaper with decades of history, are -- so with regard to your statement:

"I want to believe these people do not represent my hometown. Actually, I know they donít."

let me just say first that you're wrong -- the people on our site in the Utica forum are just as representative of Utica as you (or your newspaper) are, and there are 400+ of them on our site in that forum as I write this, and also that we've had posts from tens of thousands of people in our Utica forum over the past several years.

Who are you to say that you represent Utica and that the average Utican who is given a worldwide platform for their opinions and viewpoints, is not?

The Supreme court has consistently held that anonymous speech is essential to the freedom of speech. Sorry that the editorial control of Utica is no longer in the hands of a journalistic elite, but rather in those of your fellow Uticans.

How appropriate that right after our nation's July 4th birthday, that I'd have the opportunity to protect the freedom of speech from that most insidious of enemies - a hand wringing journalist afraid of what people really think.

It's just a matter of time before Utica gets national recognition as the most ignorant city in the northeast. It might be well deserved.

I know for a fact the coward publisher won't even "lower herself" to post a response to you. Why, her son Andrew Donovan is an alcoholic that got drunk and wrecked some old mans car and hurt the guy, yet Donna wouldn't print a word about it in her newspaper until it was pointed out that she wrote up a story about an almost identical hit&run just a couple days earlier or after her son had his little hit&run.

That's who you're dealing with here Chris. These are facts and I'll get you the links and proof if you like.

Who is Chris Tolles? Should be the title of a post in your hometown. Then next thing you know, there is personal information about your wife, your kids, your parents, and some made up story that can cause your kids grief at school. This is the type of material that I believe this young journalist is referring to. I frequent the OD and Topix for the entertainment; that's it. But Chris, you can't deny that there is a lot of horrible things written and targeted towards people - Not just within the Utica Forum but in any City Forum within topix.com site.

Well waiting decades for the pollyanna newspaper to address the career political class and the corrupt police and all the rest is an exercise in futility, our ONE newspaper is in bed with these people. Just look at how Donna tried to claim her laying off her entire printing press was presented as some for of "good news" and that "she said it herself" even the employees who were laid off were so thankful that the OD could go on!

I'm loving this! I always knew it would come to this and worked toward it myself. Thanks Chris.. you should pop in more often in this manner it keeps a lid on the crazies. Your response to them naming your site directly is going to go down in history here.

Jim:

People do post stuff that should be removed -- which is why we have a significant bunch of folks dedicated to reviewing feedback here. If there is defamatory content, we typically remove it upon getting a complaint.

I'm often the subject of vitriol on the web, and when it goes over the line, I complain, and typically get the same kind of action on other sites.

The issue here is that newspaper types think that this negative opinion is from Mars, not their town, and are in denial about the way people actually think.

In any case, I'm open to feedback about Topix (especially from our users and when its not wrapped up in a bunch of self righteous Journalistic claptrap)

Thanks for the comment.

Topix is a GREAT outlet for our area. Yes, there are inane postings, racist, homophobic, blah blah blahphobic rants and postings... BUT... there are also well thought out, honest heartfelt postings as well... To say that the Utica area is portrayed by these postings as backwards or in someway sullies our city, one only needs to look towards what actually OCCURS in other cities. I enjoy the back and forth, give and take, trying to get your own viewpoint across while trying to see the opposite sides as well. When some unknown user pops a oneliner slam into the middle of a conversation, that's all it is... just someone trying to stir the pot or looking for attention... and some are actually quite funny... so basically, Cassaundra... lighten up.

It's funny that the Observer-Dispatch (and a Utica College professor no less) would take such an Internet-unfriendly tone. I thought the Utica area was trying to bill itself as the next up and coming "Cyber Valley."
Remember these people at the OD and in the city have still got the (self supporting and convenient) attitude that "The internet isn't perfected yet" and "The internet doesn't matter"! Only THEIR words and outlets matter see?

Two points.
1). How is Cassaundra forced to read unsolicited blogs?
2). Does Cassaundra's professor know that in the founding fathers day, voicing your opinions could get you shot dead. Ask Alexander Hamilton.

INVESTIGATE CORRUPTION: Anonymous commenters, bloggers defile city,

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/utica-ny/TNCB...

It's getting to the point that the average person is not permitted to speak or voice their opinions or be permitted due process or equal protection under the law!

We believe someone put this little girl up to writing a communistic, socialistic one sided political propaganda to conceal the ultimate of all corruption that Utica entails and has since the 1957 bust Sin City that exposed this area nationwide!

Here is a statment by and from former New York State Trooper and Former Utica Police Chief C. Allen Pylman.

I will place his words on here exactly as they were said and written in the Utica Observer Dispatch:

"This started back in January, I have never been afforded the right to tell anybody anything. They've never been interested!. They've impugned my reputation, my integrity, my good name, and they never had the integrity to ask me anything."

This was from Pylman whom Mr. Roefaro had an agenda to rid him out of that chief's job to place his childhood buddy Dan LaBella into a position that he was NOT qualified for and is RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT LONGO MURDER-SUICIDE FOR THE LACK OF DEPARTMENTAL INVESTIGATION INTO A MAN WHO SHOULD HAVE HAD HIS GUN PULLED AND PLACED ON A PSYCHIATRIC LEAVE!

What happened to that Longo lawsuit?

Thanks for the comment.
Chris:

I do think the Utica Topix site could be moderated a little more aggressively. Public officials and the famous know they are open to harsh criticism, but the 'who is Sue Smith' posts are almost certainly the work of jealous exes, disgruntled employees, and nut jobs, and serves no useful purpose. I know several people who have really been hurt by these type of posts; the average person shouldn't have to put up with them (especially when they sometimes continue for weeks on end.)

There are some very intelligent observations on Topix about local problems and issues, however. It is getting to the point where I find out some very interesting local stories via Topix, before they hit any other papers or websites. I think the big issue with the Utica Topix site is that the kind of attacks that really serve no valuable purpose, and just cause people stres and grief should be weeded out more often. I realize that with hundreds of posts a day, you can't remove everything, but I would ask you to consider monitoring this site as often as possible.

Do you have any idea what thread you post this big boring tome of a rant in? Or do you just post it randomly around? Do you even add any kind of narrative to it or do you just post slabs of text expecting everyone to see your crazy point some how? Do you take drugs? If so take more. You're posts are spam and pointless. If you have nothing to say but all caps rants and rants with no point or topic then stfu or make some kind of sense. Your 20 posts about this today still make no sense get it? You make no sense.

I like how she reveals her "professor" has gaping holes in his revolutionary history (I would LOVE to know which local moron college this guy is at!) and that painting churches and having thousands of uneducated poor immigrants is some wonderful consolation for a solid capable local government and a newspaper that doesn't omit "negative" in order to make room for "Bake Sale Announcements" and stupid vapid articles about no-name musicians and "atheletes".
This is an example of a person who shouldn't consider themselves any kind of "reporter". They are so afraid of the "negative" word they stick their heads in their azzes and attack anyone who tells them it's bad.

For example, she won't listen to "negative words" when people tell her she gets 5% fatter every year and that bad fangs, mumus and forehead extensions won't help you stay happily married.

She'll wish she didn't ignore the negative when her hubby gets tired of her stupid rosey glassed retard outlook and fear of the harsh realities and leaves her fat ass. We call these people blind idiots with a mouth.

Of course, she'll blame him for being "negative"!

did our founding fathers have this in mind when they scripted freedom of speech into our Bill of Rights did our founding fathers have improper grammar and spelling. hmm i wonder if the education level was up or down in them days ? i wonder if uticaod website has ever had grammar or improper spelling? refugees are prob the ones on topix with grammar skills and she sits and criticizes topix because some users speak their mind no one has ever challenged what the topix posters have said because its prob true who is she to say they are lies and wrong ? she prob never donated a dime for heart disease. why would she pic he charity and not all charity's oh she prob doesn't know how to word it? she should be happy she received an education with a school district like this one? instead of making fun of the people with bad grammar and spelling she should help them the city I'm from doesn't make fun of anyone period not even because they received a better education then them tells a lot about you CASSAUNDRA BABER
