So what else is new? There are alcohol related deaths everyday. I guarantee it wasn't the pot that was the main cause of impairment. I know people that smoke pot and drive every single day, and have been doing it for over 50 years. Is this an another attempt to attack marijuana? Why not try to illegalize alcohol again? Because it would be as stupid as illegalizing marijuana. This tragedy is just another case of how stupid it is to drive impaired.

This case smells to high heaven. First the cops say she was clean and sober , now she has high off her head. Not to sound like a conspiracy nut but wouldn't have at least one of the kids have made noise to get her moms attention? Unless they were all out cold. And if she was as high as she was, she shouldve been swerving all over the parkway. There's more to this case than meets the eye. I hope someone follows up on it.

As an RN who works where they took her dead body, I can tell you they knew the results in minutes. Why not tell everyone up front? If the world knew the truth people would have spit on her casket instead of crying over it. And what kind of stupid husband did she have? He allowed his wife to take 5 kids to there death as well as kill 3 innocent men and don't forget the 3 injured people. The 3 injured people will be living in pain longer than it takes her body to rot in the ground. It angers me that the truth was not told right away "to protect the families"..eventually they would know the truth and now they have to be hurt and angry all over again. And please tell me the auto insurance company is NOT going to give her family one cent!! If they give her family replacement value for her vehicle and pay for the dead in the car they are saying its OK to drive drunk and high. And the nerve of her taking her brothers 3 kids in her hands...your own brother. This story is so sickening I wished she lived just so she could get 40 whips at a whipping post. Please, those that read this, don't drink and drive and give to MADD who has helped in many ways to stop sensless tragedies like this. I guess we need DWI/DUI stops all day and night as this happened in the early afternoon and no one thinks anyone is drunk then.

This is so sad. We have to wonder - did the woman have a serious drinking problem? She's driving around with almost 2 liters of Absolut in the car? That screams "alcoholic" to me.

The husband swears she was fine at 9:30 in the morning. The woman at the campsite said she appeared fine. Unless she was a full-blown alcoholic, drinking at that time of morning, in a car while driving children just seems so implausible.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but somebody blew it here. If this woman was such a drinker that she would swill vodka before noon, people had to have known she had a serious problem. She should have NEVER been allowed behind the wheel of a car or to drive children ANYWHERE. Didn't her husband or anyone in her family recognize that she was a danger to herself and others?

Yes, it's easy to blame the alcoholic. It's easy to want him to burn in hell, but what about those around him? What about those who are fully aware of the dangers yet turn a blind eye? Whose really to blame? The drunk whose mind is muddled by alcohol or the sober people around him who turn their backs to the problem?

In a country full of drunks and drug addicts we find it very easy to criticize, but how many people have ever tried to get help for loved one with an addiction problem? Not only is it extremely expensive, you can't "make" them go. So you sit and you wait and you watch someone you love deteriorate or die or cause another person to die because YOU couldn't intervene to prevent the tragedy. How stupid is that? How often does a drunk or drug addict ever have the wherewithall to save themselves? If they could think THAT clearly they wouldn't be in need of help.

Maybe Schuyler's family knew she was an alcholic and they just couldn't get her the help she needed. Still, if they knew (and they had to know) she should have never been allowed to drive a car. I hope other families facing similar addiction problems with loved ones will do whatever it takes to convince that person to seek help. In Schuyler's case, this is a tragedy that could have and should have been prevented.

Great post Donna. This is so tragic and so bizzare. The husband said she was fine when he left her at 9:30 that morning. Something doesn't add up. That seems like such a lame statement. What was going on with this woman for her to just go off on a drinking binge like this? What is her husband not saying? Was she emotionally distraught? I hope the family will speak frankly and honestly about the situation so that this can shed a light and possibly prevent another tragedy down the road. It's too late for them to try to save face now. 8 lives have been lost. They need to come clean and tell the whole story. The dot's aren't connecting here. The husband shouldn't try to act as though this woman's behavior was isolated and that he is bewildered and don't understand. This was his wife. Surely he wasn't that disconnected where he didn't know what was going on with his own wife.

Based upon what I have read about this accident, I suspect Diane Schuler was an alcoholic/drug addict. She may have been a functional alcoholic
-- an alcoholic who can still hold a job, be in a relationship, etc.

It is truly sad that no one in her family encouraged that she turn herself into A.A or N.A. I suspect that Diane and her family were in denial about serious her drinking/drug problem was.

I find it difficult her husband when he said she was all right before she left the camp site. I read in another news article that Diane sometimes smoked pot with her husband at the campsite. I am wondering if he is saying that she was all right before she left the camp site to make himself less culpable about the accident.

Accidents like this can be prevented. I encourage anyone with an alcohol problem to attend himself/herself A.A. meetings. A.A. works if a person is willing to do the steps. By the grace of God, my husband has been clean and sober for 19 years.

MADD is an alcohol prohibition special interest group that thrives on making money for it's office holders and creating senseless and draconian laws, based on data that is derived in an arcane manner, which are proven to not reduce alcohol related fatalities.

Her husband made the bad move of saying that his wife smoked up. And that bit of bad judgement will cost her estate quite a bit of change in civil court. The lawyer represending the 3 dead guys in the SUV says he smells something in this case. I have no doubt it's the smell of big bucks from the insurance companies.

Incidently, Bryan, sitting on his Mommy's lap, was the only survivor of the crash.

On the other hand, little Erin, sitting to his left, was among the many drunken Mommy, in her irresponsibility, killed.

A few years back there was a mom in my neighborhood everyone loved. Unfortunately she was addicted to pain killers and alcohol. She ended up taking her own life but for years everyone knew. Let her drive carpools. No one wanted to be the one to not let their kid go with her and her kids. But oh yes did I forget to say she was a great mother and we live in a very upscale neighborhood.

There is definitely more to this than meets the eye. The husband left the campsite at 9:30 a.m. with his wife and they drove separate cars. He took the family dog and she took all of the children. At lunchtime when they stopped at McD's he was still traveling behind them but left them at McDonald's. Assuming lunch was somewhere between 11 and noon, just based on the fact that the accident occured about 1 p.m., if Mrs. Schuler was high when she left the camp, wouldn't the husband have noticed something during the time they were traveling? If she was high when she stopped at McDonald's, wouldn't the employees have noticed something? But, nobody noticed anything amiss. Then suddenly she's driving erratically and aggressively and ultimately crashed. Conveniently, a broken bottle of Vodka is found at the scene and alcohol is found in her system. How do we know the husband didn't prepare her thermos of punch or something? Isn't there any other way marijuana can get into your system? Like brownies, etc. People were close enough to her vehicle to see that Mrs. Schuler had a car full of kids. The older kids would certainly have known when the driving was out of control. Wouldn't somebody have noticed the kids frantically signalling for help or behaving oddly if that had happened? Wouldn't the brother have heard cries or screams for help in the backgroud if the kids were trying to stop their mom/aunt? Or were they sleeping? And do kids not wake up when you hit a bump (like driving across the grass) or blow the horn (as she was reported to have been doing for some time)?
Or were the kids asleep, maybe drugged? Who's to say the husband didn't drug everybody. He's a police officer and would likely know how to stage something like this. Heck, if you watch CSI you get an idea. If you're up close and personal with it everyday you might become an expert.
I say reserve judgment and wait to see what his cell phone records show, how quickly they find his girlfriend, how much insurance money he stands to gain and what really went on. He suddenly admits that his wife smoked occasionally.
A functional alcoholic maybe. Pot smoker maybe. But an executive masquerading as a doting and careful mother (not withdrawn but active) and no one knew. This smells to high heaven.

not for nothing, but several valid claims were made here. I am now more interested on the toxi on the the other passengers and whether there was anything exotic found. I still don't understand that someone was as smashed as she was was driving straight and true (abeit in the wrong direction) on the Taconic. She should have beeen riding the rumble strips half the time. Something tells me this has the makings of a CSI NYC ep
/ cue scary music.....

So they'd rather let their children ride around in the drunk lady's car rather than risk insulting said drunk lady?

Parents like that should be shot, or at least they should have their children taken away.

Actually, heartless one, in the case mentioned, the mother was removed from the children. And for life.

You think it is fair to have a mother that is drinking and taking pain killers and then ends her life. Did you consider the stigma the children are made to suffer through life.

Once again, because no one knows what it's like to be the tin man?
