This comment does not refer to Hell but I couldn't locate another place to contact you.
Saturday, July 28, 2007 re: the age of Judaism: Your shared column was the last place I ever expected to read the term before the COMMON ERA. I would expect to see such politically correct jibberish in other sections of Newsday but not in your section. Really gentlemen, B.C. means Before Christ. Tell me A.D. now stands for AFTER DAT.

WELL THERE IS A GOD SQUAD TV SHOW, NOW, I AM NOT REFERRING TO THIS. I THINK WE LIVE HELL ON EARTH.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD THAT EXPRESSION. I BET ALOT. IT IS EITHER PURGATORY (IF THIS EXISTS) OR HELL. WHEN YOU ARE A KID, YOU THINK THINGS WILL GET BETTER, THEY DON'T, AND WHEN YOU GET OLDER, THEY JUST GET HARDER TO DEAL WITH. SO WHERE DO WE LIVE - I GUESS HELL ON EARTH.

No, the more a person suffers on earth ,the less time in purgatory.

AS I GET OLDER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I BELIEVE. MOST OF MY FAMILY IS DEAD AND I MISS THEM TERRIBLY. I WONDER HOW MANY OF GOD'S LAWS ARE MAN MADE. THE CHURCH GOT RID OF LIMBO, SO AT LEAST THOSE POOR CHILDREN AND BABIES WHO DIE SO YOUNG WILL GO TO HEAVEN IF THERE IS ONE.

I know how you feel :( But -- the church has no authority to say whether or not there even WAS a limbo; it's not the church who now "grants the privilege" of allowing unbaptized babies into heaven. I always believed a loving God would NEVER deny heaven to an innocent child.

CEE,

Yes, life is hard .... and it's not fair many times.

You know in your heart the difference between right and wrong ... be strong!

You have been mis-informed re: Limbo. It was never a doctrine of the faith. Only the thoughts of some Theologians, but never part of the deposit of faith.

Ask the Lord for strength and "expect" to get it!

I will pray for you as well.

Peace CEE

In ancient Babylonian and Assyrian beliefs the “nether world ... is pictured as a place full of horrors, and is presided over by gods and demons of great strength and fierceness.”(The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria, Boston, 1898, Morris Jastrow, Jr., p. 581) Early evidence of the fiery aspect of Christendom’s hell is found in the religion of ancient Egypt.(The Book of the Dead, New Hyde Park, N.Y., 1960, with introduction by E. A. Wallis Budge, pp. 144, 149, 151, 153, 161) Buddhism, which dates back to the 6th century B.C.E., in time came to feature both hot and cold hells.(The Encyclopedia Americana, 1977, Vol. 14, p. 68) Depictions of hell portrayed in Catholic churches in Italy have been traced to Etruscan roots.—La civiltà etrusca (Milan, 1979), Werner Keller, p. 389.

But the real roots of this God-dishonoring doctrine go much deeper. The fiendish concepts associated with a hell of torment slander God and originate with the chief slanderer of God (the Devil, which name means “Slanderer”), the one whom Jesus Christ called “the father of the lie.”—John 8:44.

The meaning given today to the word “hell” is that portrayed in Dante’s Divine Comedy and Milton’s Paradise Lost, which meaning is completely foreign to the original definition of the word. The idea of a “hell” of fiery torment, however, dates back long before Dante or Milton. The Grolier Universal Encyclopedia (1971, Vol. 9, p. 205) under “Hell” says:“Hindus and Buddhists regard hell as a place of spiritual cleansing and final restoration. Islamic tradition considers it as a place of everlasting punishment.” The idea of suffering after death is found among the pagan religious teachings of ancient peoples in Babylon and Egypt. Babylonian and Assyrian beliefs depicted the “nether world ... as a place full of horrors,... presided over by gods and demons of great strength and fierceness.” Although ancient Egyptian religious texts do not teach that the burning of any individual victim would go on forever, they do portray the “Other World” as featuring “pits of fire” for “the damned.”—The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria, by Morris Jastrow, Jr., 1898, p. 581; The Book of the Dead, with introduction by E. Wallis Budge, 1960, pp. 135, 144, 149, 151, 153, 161, 200.

“Hellfire” has been a basic teaching in Christendom for many centuries. It is understandable why The Encyclopedia Americana (1956, Vol. XIV, p. 81) said:“Much confusion and misunderstanding has been caused through the early translators of the Bible persistently rendering the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades and Gehenna by the word hell. The simple transliteration of these words by the translators of the revised editions of the Bible has not sufficed to appreciably clear up this confusion and misconception.” Nevertheless, such transliteration and consistent rendering does enable the Bible student to make an accurate comparison of the texts in which these original words appear and, with open mind, thereby to arrive at a correct understanding of their true significance

...Sure it does. Limbo is God's holding tank. Your relatives can pay money to light candles to decrease your time there. It's like work release or bond to get out early!

Whole Bible Old Testament New Testament
1 Matthew 18 Found 4

8 And if thy hand, or thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.

2 Matthew 25 Found 3

41 Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels.

3 Matthew 25 Found 3

46 And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting.

4 Mark 9 Found 3

44 And if thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter lame into life everlasting, than having two feet, to be cast into the hell of unquenchable fire:

5 Mark 9 Found 3

42 And if thy hand scandalize thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life, maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into unquenchable fire:

6 Judges 15 Found 3

5 And setting them on fire he let the foxes go, that they might run about hither and thither. And they presently went into the standing corn of the Philistines. Which being set on fire, both the corn that was already carried together, and that which was yet standing, was all burnt, insomuch, that the flame consumed also the vineyards and the oliveyards.

7 Jeremias 38 Found 3

18 But if thou wilt not go out to the princes of the king of Babylon, this city shall be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire: and thou shalt not escape out of their hands.

8 Jeremias 34 Found 3

2 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Go, and speak to Sedecias king of Juda, and say to him: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will deliver this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

9 Luke 16 Found 2

9 And I say to you: Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity; that when you shall fail, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.

The teaching of hell, the place of fire and burning punishment, is a teaching from the Roman Catholic religion, not the Bible.

The Bible says when a person dies and he goes into the grave, he goes back to the dirt or dust. He is non existant, he has no life. Eccl. 9:5

The teaching of the resurrection of the dead is from Jesus Christ himself, and his apostles also taught the dead will come back to life when this earth is cleaned of all wickedness. John 5:28,29

Almighty God Jehovah does not burn people or punish people, he is a God of love. He tells us what to do for our protection and health. It is up to you to read your Bible, not let someone tell you what it says. John 17:3

The first century Christians had the hope of being resurrected to heaven and share with Jesus in his Kingdom government. That does not apply to mankind today, our hope is to inherit this earth and see it ruled over by God's righteous Kingdom.

That's not a very rational train of thought. But I'll bet the catholic church endorses it.
