Confused in Monroe

United States

#1 Jul 26, 2009
I have lived in Monroe County for a long time & I enjoy reading the Watchman, but after reading this past week's issue I have some questions.
First of all, why didn't the Watchman cover the fact that a man was convicted of 1st degree murder on Friday July 17th? If fact the paper did not even mention that a trial had been underway and that the Prosecutor & Police dept. had done a wonderful job in convicting a murderer. It baffles me that I had to read about what happened in the WV Daily News printed in Greenbrier County. I think that is sad. Shouldn't our county paper be reporting what is happening in our county?

Listen to the local news and you will know what goes on. The Watchman is a great paper. I look forward to getting it every week.

I like to get it too, but it doesn't even cover news stories that are affecting the county we live in. They printed the story about the drug bust in Peterstown. I think that this murder case was much more interesting. And there was no coverage of it in the edition printed today. Go figure.

The only local news is who went where last week or who visited who...an a school board read, which is really useless, from what people say that goes on at the schools.

Dingo by no means is this a stick or jab to you but do you ever concur with anything on topix that makes sense? I look forward to geeting my copy of The Watchman every week while away from home. Its nice to see a local newspaper that is still grounded in the old timey ways. Mr. Mohler and the staff there do a great job with the paper and for anyone that disagrees dont buy it and get some other paper. We have freedom of choice on so many things yet so many people wanna sit back and growl and grumble around about such insignifigant things as this. If someone as an individual is so very interested in news around the area why don't you approach the watchman and become a writer for the stories you want to hear about? Or would that be too much work for someone that could only want to know for gossip's sake. People you should be thankful for the things that we have in Monroe county. Try living somewhere big and see just how down to earth that can be..

Sorry about the ramble but I guess it all boils down to the old saying if you arent gonna be part of the solution then dont add to the problem.

I agree w/ you statements about the good things about the Watchman. I like to see who got married and who has had a baby, but I wonder if these news stories would have been printed in if Rod Mohler was still Prosecutor. I believe that they would have been and I don't think it is a very adult thing to do to omit such big information. Many other people in the county are reading other papers to find out what goes on here, but I think it's sad that they have to. I also think it's a little much to tell someone to report for the Watchman to fix the problem. They are not going to let just anyone write for them.

I look forward to getting The Watchman each week, but am generally disappointed. Much of the news is not county news, but old news we have already read in daily newspapers or on the internet. What happened to Monroe County community news? Surely, there's something going on in the various communities to report.

The Monroe Wathman or the Monroe Mohler? They do only report "Mohler" happenings. Biased journalism at its best!

Look how they tried to pick on John Bryan,an attorney in Union. Rod was an awful prosecutor, and the other side of the family certainly isn't much better with the paper.

There is A LOT of stuff they don't put in the paper. Important stuff. I hate reading it because it's always useless stuff.

Notice that the paper never fails to mention when Rod Mohler's little league team does anything. Don't get me wrong with part of that. I love Little League & think it is awesome. But I believe the coaches get listed every time just so Rod's name can be there.

Why do you need the Watchman for news when all you do on this site is gossip? You tell me why it has to be printed in any paper when if you need to know something that is NOT true all anybody has to do is log on and read your crap or walk in The Kalico. The man who prints the Monroe Watchman is a very respectful person and prints what he is told and not gossip..So if you people get a job and get off your asses you will have something better to do than start rumors or gossip about something you have no idea about!

How come they didn't cover Rod's shining moment of the drunken bus driver plea? It's not as if that isn't newsworthy-- shucks it made TV but wasn't important enough for the Watchman. The Watchman has an agenda, and the agenda belongs to Craig and his Mom.

We do not want him to report gossip, JUST THE NEWS, and be fair about it.

Oh!!! How noble this person is for standing up for the Watchman and its community efforts.

Craig Mohler, and every journalist that publishes that paper, are wonderful and respectful people -great citizens. The fact is, however, they have abrigated their duties as journalists. As I said in an earlier post: the Watchman only reports "Mohler happenings."

They do report some credible stories, but for the most part, they are remiss on important and vital information.

As to your comments, the only time journalists should be "TOLD" what to write is for PAID advertisements. They, with the help of their impartial minds, are to report the news without being influenced by others. They are to report the news only after meticulous research and careful examination. Contrary to what you believe, sir, they are NOT to be TOLD what to write. They use the pen themselves, freely and independetly.

Obviously, sir, you're like us: you have nothiing better than to check Topix yourself. Hypocrite. Obviously, you have nothing better to do than pretend you know what your talking about. You, sir, don't even know what journalism is (yes, I ended the sentence with a preposition). If you did, you wouldn't be reading the Watchman. But, for the sake of supporting community efforts, I occasionally flip a page or two.
