Tennessee named one of the top ten most depressing states

- The state of Tennessee has received a real bummer of a distinction.

The state was named one of the Most Depressing States in the U.S. by Health Magazine.

The article notes that while a location isn't enough to make a person depressed, Tennessee's rates of depression as well as obesity and diabetes, which can worsen depression, helped it to make the list.

In fact, the articles notes that nearly 10 percent of residents have experienced an episode of major depression in the past year, the highest rate of any state.

The other states making the list include:

Arkansas
Indiana
Kentucky
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Nevada
Oklahoma
West Virginia

Top 10 most depressing states...

10. Arkansas - Arkansas consistently ranks among the worst in the nation on several measures of mental health, especially among young adults.
9. Indiana - Like many of its neighbors, this Rust Belt state has struggled with a sluggish economy, high unemployment, and massive budget shortfalls.
8. Kentucky - Rates of depression and other mental-health problems are higher than the national average throughout the mountainous and sparsely settled region known as Appalachia
7. Michigan - With unemployment as high as 20% in some counties, itís not surprising that residents might be feeling distressed.
6. Mississippi - The poorest state in the U.S., Mississippi ranks at or near the bottom on many health measures, from obesity to heart disease
5. Missouri - Missouri isnít at the bottom of the barrel in any one measure of mental health, but it gets very low marks in several areas, including the rate of serious psychological distress (13%).
4. Nevada - Nevada has high rates of mental distress, and, at last count, about 1 in 11 residents had experienced at least one episode of major depression in the previous year.
3. Oklahoma -Maybe it's the flat, barren landscape and threat of severe weather; maybe itís the high poverty rate (16%) and low rates of health-insurance coverage.
2. Tennessee - Tennessee is the unhappiest state in the union: Nearly 10% of residents have experienced an episode of major depression in the previous year.
1. West Virginia - The Mountain State is ranked last or next-to-last in every mental-health category on our list, including the average number of "mentally unhealthy" days residents have per month and the percentage of people who experience frequent mental distress (15%).

They do have grass there. Lots of it. Both kinds! I won't have a yard so I won't need a mower. I think I have the mower fixed since the last time you borrowed it.

Believe me, Alan. I understand how hurtful it is to be rejected by Charlie. And I've found that the only way to get through it, is to just love him more. That, and every so often, sneak into his bedroom, and try on his underwear.
