Hundreds of teachers from around California descended on the state Capitol Monday to make the case for extending tax hikes as a way to stave off deep budget cuts to public education.

Playing hookey from school and demanding more taxes to retain the system!?!? These teachers are not too bright.....

Look boys and girls there are some cities and counties in the United States that cannot afford to pay their retirees. Read that again! You had better be talking about reductions in ALL aspects including pay, retirement, programs, etc... If something drastic is not done NOW there will not be ANY RETIREMENT CHECKS going out or paychecks for that matter. We are less than 5 years away from "just trying to survive" mode rather than "I want" mode.

When you talk to teachers about "budget cuts" it's not just pay.

For example, we have a monthly copy limit at our school that is exceeded by the number of copies we need to make for the curriculum we are required to teach.

So I bought a laser printer with my own money.

Toner ran out. So I asked my principal if they could order me a new cartridge. Nope. Another $50 out of my own money, on top of all of the pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons, etc. I buy for my students each year. Name another job where you have to buy all of the office supplies for your co-workers.

I'd love for my students to have at least one field trip this year. No money.

I have about five students who should go to summer school so they can be ready for second grade. They only have money to send two.

Those two students would do very well to spend another year in first grade. Their parents agree. But that would increase the number of first graders, and that would cost more money. So they'll get moved on to second grade.

Now let's talk about benefits. Every teacher in California pays 8.5% of their income to STRS. That retirement plan is all we have. We don't get Social Security. Even teachers who worked 40 quarters before becoming teachers and paid into SS will get nothing due to the "Social Security Offset" that reduces my SSI by the amount of my teacher retirement.

I can retire at 55. That's if I can live on $1500 a month. I've done the math, and figured out that with the social secuirty offset, my teacher retirement is just slightly better than a matching 401k. But not much. Any cuts to teacher retirement would mean that I would have been better off keeping my 8.5% than giving it to the state.

So excuse me if I'm a little protective of my pension. It's all I've got.

Sarg;

It is not YOUR or the taxpayers responsibility to provide basic supplies to students it is the responsibility of the PARENTS.

YOUR union should be standing up for you with references to mandated handouts. If you use your own money and refuse to take it to YOUR union that is YOUR fault. If YOUR union refuses to stand up for you and others that is the fault of the union members. As long as YOUR union stands up and protects incompetent teachers that is going to reflect badly on ALL teachers.

If we are broke YOU are going to have to take a pay cut and a pension cut that is simple math. There is nothing that says that teachers are a protective group. Remember YOU work FOR the taxpayers and answer to the taxpayers.

Now sit down and shut up!

Big Teachers are Government agents. It is their avowed purpose to indoctrinate our children to be demanding activists who badger their already overtaxed California parents to cough up more money. When they go to Sacramento to protest, Big Teachers are not protesting their corrupt free-spending "out of control" politician pals. Rather they are biting the hand of the hard working tax paying California minority who feed them.

but i would add that for the most part they are being used for most teachers (MOST not all) are NOT too bright.....

These so-called teachers don't deserve our sympathy, they produce generations of self-centered graduates who think of nothing but their own personal affairs and to hell with the rest of society. This is exactly being reflected by the teacher's protest activity to save their thick hides.

Times have changed, socialized education is no longer a desirable alternative to private education just like socialized health care. Everyone should pay their own way, taxpayers are being overburdened by budgets that benefit only the chosen few.
