Resolution through dialogue, what a bunch of crap.
They're common criminals, blow the crap out of them wherever they are.
The only negotiations should be at the end of .50 or .308.
I was thinking of more like 16" shells. But come to think, they are not ready to be put back into service are they? Even if they were, B.O. wouldn't think of using such harsh measures to combat "Piracy On The High Seas". There is a time for negotiations, and then there is a time for definitive "ACTION". This is the time for the latter. Get the captain back, then blow them into oblivion.

I would suspect that their main concern right now is to get the captain out of this alive. At present, they are in a lifeboat from the Maersk-Alabama, out of fuel. They are going nowhere. If the captain was not aboard the boat, no ammo would have to be expended. A high speed run or two close by the lifeboat would capsize them with the wake, leaving them in the water. Ship like these two make huge wakes at 30= knots.

Establish 'safe corridors' of passage for commercial vessels. Monitor those quadrants by satellite and with a picket-line of the occasional Destroyer. Notify any Cruise ship of impending danger so they can prepare to repel boarders with thier own armed private security forces. We have better things to do with SEAL Team6 than running around saving tourists.
If you know where pirates' bases of operation are then great, thump them; but you don't know. So as an alternative, you's hose the entire country of Somolia? Jesus, don't you think those poor bas **** have been through enough?
That makes sense.

But with the amount of ocean they have to cover, is that realistic?

I would think we could use the same satellites and UAV's to follow these criminals back to their hideouts so we could bomb them into oblivion.

Maybe they have, maybe they haven't had enough. Doesn't seem like they ever get a decent gov't in their and we sure don't need to police another country, especially one where we screwed up so bad a few years ago, so that is why I was proposing some stand off weapons so we don't need any ground troops.

Cruise missiles would work for that matter.

AR, one additional thing.

My thoughts are that most of these types of people--criminals, terrorists, pirates--are truly cowards because they attack the unarmed. And therefore, they only understand one thing--superior firepower.

That's why I was in shock and awe when we invaded Iraq. Had that been fought without politicians getting their fingers involved, we could have withdrawn by now, most of our troops. And we can be thankful that it didn't turn into another Vietnam, because it was headed in that direction. The surge should've happened on day 1.

Just a good ole American who still believes that victory through superior firepower is the way to win battles and wars.

USS Gettysburg, which is on scene can carry and most likely is carrying Tomahawk missiles. The trouble is, there are no clearly defined "bases" that these pirates are operating from.

Agreed...I remember a co-worker at the beginning of the invasion asking me what I "thought" would happen. I said from a military standpoint this will be over in a month. He approached me about the time GWB was making his flight-deck debut and said, "You were right almost to the day, combat operations have ceased." I responded, "Yeah, now you'll see the killing start."

Just blow the damn pirates out of the water, then shell the pirate havens on land---don't worry about the Somali government--it doesn't exist. Maybe some innocents will get hurt and maybe they will quit messing around.

I'll volunteer you to drive the boat close enough to do that and lob the grenade. We'll see if you can get close enough before you die.

One problem is they probably have their wives and children at their hideout. Once the bomb hits, kills them all, the survivors will lay out the bodies of the women and children and the propaganda machine will again be in high gear...those bad bad Americans...

The captain has been rescued, and 3 of the pirates have been killed. The remaining one has been taken into custody. President Obama twice gave the orders to use force to rescue the Captain if his life was in danger. It was determined that that was the case, so some snipers shot and killed the 3 when they came out of the lifeboat. Before that, the surviving one had abandoned them.

I for one am glad that the President approached the situation with caution. He wasn't just going to go shooting from the hip, but he was fully prepared to give the orders to act with needed force if negotiations fell through. And there was never any question about paying them ransom.
