I find it quite interesting that Superintendent Kelley reports that the economy is the biggest blame of the decrease of students. When in fact if you were to do an interview or have a meeting of the parents and students in the area for this 2010-11 school year alone, you will find that the district is to blame for the decrease.
The pressures of supposedly preparing the students for college that are being demanded are the same and exact pressures that have the enrollment down. I would like to see the transfer to surrounding school districts for this school year alone. How about the drop out rate of discouraged students. I know for a fact that I am not the only one that feels this way. Inquire from its parents or students themselves of the satisfaction with South Umpqua. The South Umpqua School district is trying to save face. It has raised the expectations of the graduating credit requirements to get rid of "the bad seeds" instead of fixing the internal problems. I feel that they encourage the transfers and drop outs and blame it on the economy instead of having to find ways to cut budgets. They make false claims as to how wonderful their schools are when they do not take to heart the concerns of students or parents in the area. Check in with the surrounding schools on where their new enrolled students are transfered from.
On top of that how about the bullying that is not addressed. I am right now in process of filing a complaint as well as in the process of pulling both of my daughters out of the school district that I, myself, attended for 12 yrs, due to the unwillingness to put a stop to the bullying.
South Umpqua School district needs to step up to the plate and quit worrying about making their statistics look good & worry about what the people in the community that support it and entrust with their children needs.
