Update: 6 charged with elder abuse facing jail time

Full story: The Ukiah Daily Journal

Six Valley View Skilled Nursing Center former employees arrested Tuesday on suspicion of elder abuse could get no jail time, or could be sentenced to up to a year in jail, according to Mendocino County District Attorney Meredith Lintott, if found guilty of the charges against them.

This is just plain B.S. on the part of the AG they should prosecute these clowns, I had to put my Dad in this place years ago and it abought broke my heart he was not there very long, just until we could move him back to another place till we got moved to a bigger place so he could come home to live with us, and My Mother and Sister were both nurses and they said that some of the abuses that go on in this Valley View is unbelieveable and you can see for yourself what kind of people they now hire, how would the AG feel if their loved one was treated like this....

They take these druggies from homeless encampments and put them into a short education program and then turn them loose in a place where they can get their hands on the meds of these old folks and this is what you get.

These clowns should be stripped butt naked and their bodies covered with A + D ointment and made to run through the streets begging for forgiveness. When that is done they should then be locked up for at least 10 years each. If one of my loved ones had been treated this way................read between the lines.

My mother spent three weeks in this facility about 5 years ago. She was given medication that turned her into a zombie until I intervened. She was treated as if she were being warehoused. I hope that the DA understands that these individuals are simply doing what is tolerated in the facility. I will refuse all medical help to further my life if the only option left to me is one of these facilities. In fact, Dr. Kervorkian is preferable to being warehoused with these attendants.

no one should really judge these people without facts. some of them are completely guilty and deserve the consequences. How would you people like it if you were arrested because someone handed you a piece of fruit but didn't tell you it was forbidden fruit. That's exactly what happened to some of these CNA's.

So, you think it's the American way to convict someone without knowing all the facts. Are you a nazi or just stupid? It appears stupidity is your thing by the way you write and think.

Mendo707 you must be on something! No one has to tell you that mistreating those you are paid to take care of is wrong. My grandmother was at Valley View years ago and the amount of money they charge for NOT taking care of people properly is alarming. They hadnt bathed any patients in almost a week because they said they were out of soap! The United States is rated one of the worst in Senior Care in the world. Hopefully those arrested will be sentenced to the maximum allowed, then banned from working as a CNA in the future.

When you take a job as a caregiver you take on the responsibility of being a "Mandated Reporter". This means that if you see or know of someone being mistreated in ANYWAY it is your duty to report it. If you do not report it then you are allowing this to happen and are just as guilty as the person doing the mistreating.

My Mother was there for YEARS and I know of NO abuse that went on with her. She wasn't a dementia patient though, so she could speak and stand up for herself most of the time.

I know none of the names of the people that were arrested, which tells me they were all newer employee's and as far as some not being responsible...any one with 1/2 a brain KNOWS there is no reason to put A&D ointment over the entire body. And yes, you are a mandated reporter when you work in Social care...it's sad that people don't have the courage to stand up in situations such as this.

I stand by Valley View, as they care of my mother was wonderful, until she finally died of natural causes, after a long, painful struggle.

I live near enough to complain about staff behavior - which has been ATROCIOUS the last year. Sometimes it's like a staff party @ 4:00 a.m. outside in the patio area complete with booze bottles thrown over the fence and cussing like sailors...

Sometimes clients get stuck outside and can't get in and cry for help, or the buzzers go off in rooms unanswered for 20 minutes. There seems to be NO regard for others when management is not present.

And according to laws in place as well as VV policy, if ANY staff knew of another staff doing something illegal or immoral, that staff has a legal obligation to come forward - thus standing by doing nothing makes then just as guilty. I also assume becoming a CNA a person actually legally obligates themselves by some swearing in process to upload the ethics of their profession in the utmost regard. There is no innocent CNA here.

There is no room for complacency, especially in a health care setting. People who walk around pretending to be unaware of a co-worker doing wrong is just wrong.

no one said convict them without facts. if you read the article above it says the incident happened in June so they have had over a month of ongoing investigation and gathering of facts. To say dont judge them until you have all the facts.. and that they were "give a piece of fruit..." is silly. they were adults in an important position in our community. they werent children and they knew what they were doing. If they thought what they were doing was wrong or illegal then they shouldnt have done it. somewhere your morals should step in. These people are sick and fall in the lines of necrophiliac. sickens me to think that they thought it was okay to use a human being,,, someone elses mother or father as an object to play a prank on someone. very sick. I hope they are never allowed to work in that field again.

This is an absolute travesty! It is people like this who give nursing homes a bad name. They clearly do not care about the people they work for, because in all actuality they work for those patients. The guilty parties should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law with no leniancy. Abusing these people is like abusing a small child. Unacceptable!

I use to work at V V facility back in the 90's. It doesn't surprise me that something like this happened. Why? Because the LVN's on duty and their expectation of the CNA's to do their jobs without any "emotional connection" to the patient. In this line of work these people are at the end of their lives. Death is a routine experience to these workers, and the emotional tole it takes on a person is expected to be non-existent.

CNA's are expected to brush it off, it doesn't matter that you just took care of someone for 7 hours a day for the past 4 months and they just died. You are to move on.

In order to detach from these feelings of loss CNA's are encouraged to not get attached to patients, in order to do that you have to pretend they aren't a person who means anything to you.

If our caretakers detached emotionally, then they have no regard for our elders as people and this sort of abuse is the result.

I don't condone what these people did, nor do I excuse their actions, but the current working conditions is encouraging others like them to put up an emotional wall. Without our emotions things like this are more likely to occur.

We have to break the cycle.

Nice try, but there is NO EXCUSE for a so called adult working in a professional setting to do what these miserable excuse's for human's are being accused of doing. If found guilty (providing they are charged and actually go to trial) they should be punished to the max.

You need to be a bit more clear with that statement. Are you saying the CNA's were handed elderly people to care for but didn't know they weren't supposed to use them for their sick entertainment? What is it you were really trying say when you said "like if someone handed you a piece of fruit but didn't tell you it was forbidden fruit"? If these people (?) aren't smart enough to know their job was to care for the clients and not smear them with a product that could have caused someone to drop and perhaps severely injure them then they themselves are in serious need of a head Dr. Once more I will say "THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR ANYONE TO TREAT AN ELDERLY PERSON IN THIS MANNER". If you want to defend the act then book yourself a room and let them care for you in your old age.
