I agree 100%! From my experience a person who seriously wants to kill themselves wont say anything or seek help because that will keep them from their goal, but if someone says they want to hurt themselves (or someone else) it should be taken seriously. My friend recently did something similar - he and his wife were fighting and he called my house and said he just wanted to "end it all". We immediately called the police and they made sure he got the help that he needed.
I wish you would have been around when my nephew needed some help. His so called roomates did nothing and waited two days before contacting his mother. But the police still have not said he did this to HIMSELF!!

I'll say again his roommates were good kids going to college full time and also working at local shops. they were not his babysittiers, they were his friends, and they did care, again, my condolences to his family and his friends who will forever remember a great young man.

I'll say again, the cause of death still has not come out. Few things are not adding up. Wonder how good the kids will look when it does come out.

Leah~ Roger must have been a wonderful person. I'm sorry that I did not have the pleasure of meeting him. May he rest in peace. I can't tell you how important it is to families that he is not forgotten by his community. Rosie was my sister and it means a lot that you have not forgotten her or the unforgivable neglect on the part of CHP employees. Freda

well, the thing is; someone did suspect what roger was going to do, and did nothing to follow him when he left the house that night. why would a person have to be a "proffesional" to stop a person from harming themselves? i mean, when the police took there first missing persons report containing the information of roger being depressed, roger telling friends he was depressed and going to the park that night. police knowing it was very concerning to all that knew him. why did they not go to th last place he had told he would be? after all, they are proffesionals, and they did nothing!! reminds me of an unfortunate death back in the 80s in ukiah. " rosie grover". teen arrives back in town from summer break off of bus in ukiah 2 miles from her home on the middle of the night. calls dispatch scared someone is following her, needs ride home. is told "it is not our jurisdiction" next day she is found bruttaly murdered.how hard is it to send a couple of units to last known whereabouts of a troubled teen to look into his or her safety? maybe it would have been to late, maybe not, the point is he is gone now and something needs to change about how this was dealt with to prevent future tragedies.

Dear Roger,

I know that it has been many years since this happend but it took me a while to find you. We used to play together in school, back when you lived in Wilits. I thought I lost you when you were missing from school after a fight we had. Turns out you got into an acident an a tree branch went into your head. When you finally came back to school, we said we were sorry to each other. I was so worried about you. We had another fight and the next thing I knew you were gone. You had moved away without warning. Years went by, and I would think about you, and wish that I could have said goodbye, or that I was sorry. I don't even remember why we were fighting. I thought I saw you one day while I was in Ukiah driving. I was heart broken and in tears when I was told you had died. Twice now, I have not gotten to say goodbye to you. I miss you, and I wish I could have been there to hold your hand. You were beautiful, on the outside and the inside. Goodbye Roger, I love you, and I hope that I will get to see you when I am gone from this world.

o.k., so "annoyed" you say that so called procedures for looking for a 19 year old are far different than a 9 year old. well, you may be right in that sense, but what about the instance of a 19 year old who went camping in that similiar area back in 11/05? if you go to comment #15 in here and click on the sheriffs link, then click on missing persons, you will read of an entirely different case of a 19 year old "thurston" man who dissapeared over night while camping. the next day police responded and the day after that, search and rescue got involved. so maybe the name thurston is a little more inportant then dickey? and you claim to know "roger and the mother"? clearly you do'nt know as much as you claim to. my point in all of this is just that when someone is missing, regardless of who they are, or how old they are, why not take the time to search apropriately. it is after all there job to find the missing person not the publics.although maybe if friends and family had not found his body he would still be out there now!!last time i checked ukiah was'nt a huge crime area that is taking up all the officers time so they could'nt help better orginize the search. regardless, what's done is done. nothing can change that now:(
I am the wife of Thomas Thurston. He was not related to the infamous dealership Thurstons. He was missing miles from town, nowhere near lowgap park. his disappearance was investigated immediately because he was camping miles from town. They knew where he had been at, previously that night an it wasnt likely that he just went to a friends house or took off with someone. my huaband is still missing, and while im glad people still remember him, please do not bring up his case like his case got unjustifiable or undeserved treatment. I am terribly sorry Rogers friends and family have suffer with grief and pain as I have. my husband is still missing, and I have never received closure if knowing what happened to him, which feels worse than knowing and moving forward with your life. I will forever be wondering, and dealing with twisting emotions and thoughts, unaware of whether or not he is coming home. You know he is not, and I envy you for that. I pray your grief has progressed better than mine, and thag none of you ever have to go through what I habe for these past (almost) 8 years.

Tom Thurston and I went to elementary school together and I have good memories. I don't think he would hurt himself. I wish I knew more.
