My vote was a vote against allowing a corporation to control the process. The specific plan gave DDR free reign to do whatever they wanted. The property became the sovereign nation of DDR. It was a vote against poor planning.

So, I am still wondering what SOLE really wants for our community. We know they did not want DDR, and many involved with SOLE said they did not want more big box retail that would destroy our downtown. Shannon Riley or Shoe Fly Sox was the leader in this mantra. Yet many involved with SOLE have been saying that big box can go down to the airport. So some in SOLE are ok with Big Box as long as it's in the city, and some from SOLE are not ok with Big box because it destroys the down town merchants and/or the small town feel. Which is it?
Some in SOLE, let by Mr. Shoemaker said they have an idea for industry at the Masonite site and even did a dog and pony show (although they never really said much of anything specific) just before the election (to confuse the voters even more). But now, Mr. SOLE is disbanding, and Mr. Shoemaker seems to be on to other maters. So was there a legitimate idea on the table or not? Did it finally dawn on them that they could not afford the $20 million price tag on the land, and then afford to finish cleaning it up (buy an insurance policy at great expense like DDR did), and they could not afford to do the infrastructure either... and did they then discover that this thing would never fly... and so they are just going to pretend they never said anything? What gives? How did this help the people in Mendocino county?
Will SOLE, Richard, or Guinness be down at the supervisors meetings pushing for the revenue sharing agreement now?
KC says the work now begins, but it sounds as if all the people involved with SOLE are just going to fade away now that they have defeated the evil giant from Ohio. Is their work done? What did they do that benefited the average citizen of this county?
Were the voters duped into believing that there was a plan B happening to bring jobs and raise money for the county coffers?
How is Mendocino County better off today than they were before the election? Do any of the unemployed have any hope of finding work anytime soon? Any hope on the horizon?
I heard that someone at the Rally for the Valley said something about manufacturing wood furniture and employing thousands of people. When is that going to happen? Or was this just another confusing promise from SOLE and it's supporters?
what's next?

The ball is in DDR's court they gambled when they bought land zoned industrial . Then they gambled when they brought their specific plan to the ballot. They can submit a completed plan to the Board of Supervisors or they can sell the property so someone else can develop it. It really is not up to SOLE. They have absolutely no control of what happens.
Complaining SOLE's inaction them is completely inappropriate. It is not SOLE's property. Call DDR

Whatever. Voting to support the planning department's process is a no growth vote as that is the plan. You voted to to keep the local government overly involved in all future projects and to make sure that their authority to stop development is upheld.

First, SOLE was a campaign committee. It only existed to defeat Measure A.

Second, the ball is now in DDR's court. You want something to happen at Masonite? First DDR has to be willing to sell the property because ALL they do is retail.

Third, you ask if any of the unemployed have any hope of finding work anytime soon, as if Measure A would have changed anyones employment status. Wake up. DDR was not going to build ANYTHING. Their CEO said so, that they are moving their investment money to Brazil. You were DUPED into thinking they would build anything here. Get over it.

To say that DDR would not build anything at the former Masonite sight is foolish. Ukiah is probably the only area in the country without major store closings and loss of retail during the current recession. Could it really be that they did market research and concluded that retail was needed in this area? Only the construction industry would have seen jobs quickly as the site was being prepped and contamination cleaned up. Likely only the construction industry and the lawyers would have been busy at first as it takes quite some time for a project of this scope to be completed. The managers, store employees and maintenance jobs would be created down the road as the project opened. All you will ever know for sure is that there will now be no jobs in any field other than law involved in the future of this site. As for DDR selling the site, who would buy it and why? As for industrial use you are too far from suppliers and customers with to much bureaucratic nonsense and no rail service to be viable as a future site to manufacture anything.

Once you swallow the bait you sure stay hooked, don't you? I must have missed the part where the DDR CEO said the ONE exception to mothballing projects they aren't committed to was Ukiah. It is absurb to say they will build here. Retail sales in Santa Rosa are down 30%. I think they are down the same or more in Ukiah and Mendocino County. You really are a fool to think DDR was going to build you a Costco in the current economic climate. You were duped. The fact you stay duped is it must be in your nature.

I know you right wing anti-government types have a problem with this, but we are a nation of laws. Including zoning laws, planning and all that stuff.

Owning land gives you rights, but they don't automatically trump the rights of the community and all the laws set up to protect the public interest. So you get to develop your property based on the way it is zoned. You don't like the zoning you can try to get it changed. Just follow the law, what's wrong with that?

Measure A would not have brought this community anything but trouble. Your precious Costco can still come here only it will have to be to land already zoned for it. Maybe you didn't notice, but the people have spoken. Sorry.

The problem is a planning department that withholds changes and permitting for projects that are economically viable then directly competes with the developers using public funds and the zoning process as leverage. As for the Costco who cares. The issue is a department that uses the process to hamper the efforts of landowners who are trying to use the property they own in a way the owner sees fit. Was DDR ever given a zoning hearing or were they just put on indefinite hold and forced to go to the voters? Yes the voters have spoken and there will be no cleanup, no jobs and no redevelopment of an otherwise undesirable site. The voters have also ensured that the site will remain a blighted mess for years to come. Congratulations. If you read the article in today's paper focusing on Charlie stump he says two thing of note:
"Focusing on infill development and redevelopment are methods being used to alleviate the growth pressures being felt by Ukiah, a city that is reaching build-out", Stump said.
"Such an approach may allow young people to remain in the community, build a career, buy a home and raise a family"

Do you know what build out means?
Do you think that young people have career opportunities in this area? Outside the weed industry?
Do you think they will have an affordable place to live if no residences are built?
Do you give a shit?
Community activist?

Solar Power and Green Energy are the Future! This site is perfectly situated to become a solar/alternative power plant and manufacturing plant. The solar farm as seen from Hwy 101 will be an excellent billboard for the product and the manufacturing of panels and all the associated equipment give us the high wage and benefit jobs of the future. Include a training center too! The transportation corridor is there and the labor force is in place. This is a NO BRAINER! We will also benefit from a clean reliable power source of the future.
Hey MendoMike, give up the beef and make a suggestion rather that suggesting others do so then complaining. What is your idea?

Hey No Sence, You really have NO sense do you? How about I buy the property next to your house and put in a toxic waste dump? A PIG Farm? A RENDERING PLANT? A LANDFILL? It is my property and I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT with it! Any problems? I bet this would be a problem if it were next door to your house. Zoning laws exist for a reason!

That is the most shallow bit of hogwash I have ever read- This election was all about the agenda of no growth advocates who run the city and the county.
There will be no tax sharing agreement, there will be no green jobs, there will be no action..All we'll get is another 15-20 years of no UVP and that warzone looking Shoemaker Park. None of these things will happen because the powers that be- city AND county- don't want them to happen.
I'm amazed at the gullibility of the UDJ.
Hey SHALLOW MIKE, We are at a beginning not an end! Measure A went down because it was HOGWASH! As long as you are around nothing will be done. Quit Bitchi-g and make a suggestion that is viable. Thou Dost Protest To Much!
