KC Meadows thinks Tommy Wayne helps sell her paper and therefore pay her drinking tab. It's disgusting what some people will do for a buck.

Nah. Meadows publishes Kramer's juvenile maunderings -- as she does the reprints of Mark Scaramella's obfuscatory "reporting" from the Boonville newspaper, because of pressure from Bruce Anderson.
What hold does Anderson have on Meadows? That's the question. Something about alcohol?

Actually, Tommy Wayne Kramer's observations make him a cultural icon. That bitchy style of commentary mostly died out when the drag queens of the 50s and 60s retired or died. In their defense, they mostly lampooned celebrities. I doubt they were intentionally cruel about ordinary people struggling to make a difference in the community in whatever ways they could imagine. There is no humor in evil.

Perhaps TWK should just wear a top hat, toss a long feather boa around his neck and pretend he's Marlene Dietrich There are three community theaters in the county, presumably receptive to new (or very old) talent. He certainly can't be pleasing the community he writes about. If you could persuade him to add some net stockings a sultry hat, and a cigarette in a long holder, you'd have a suitable photo to accompany his diatribes.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see who TWK really is? One might even imagine he has these costume items handy, Think of how many people would like to comment about him with the same fascination and fervor with which he reviles everything in sight. Fair's fair.

I could lend him a truly fetching pair of buckled patent leather pumps.

I actually like reading his articles. Itís a new and fresh read in the UDJ. Beieve it or not, but he does have a lot of truths in his writing. Again this boils down to, if you donít like it, donít read it. Or are you being forced?

He's acerbic, true, but if he was a 'Bruce Anderson' someone else would own the UDJ.

My understanding of Mr. Anderson's stamina in the face of obvious libel, slander, and defamation lawsuits seems to be merely that he personally is worthless, so there's no point suing him.

At least, that's they way that Mike Sweeney portrays him:

If I wanted to listen to garbage like TWKs I could just plop myself down next to the drunkest person at any local bar at 1 AM & listen to them ramble. He is a horrible writer, & not entertaining or funny in the least. Frankly the man sounds like he is just an angry, bitter drunk.

Oh well, it's not like any of actually expect anything resembling quality writing or journalism from the UDJ.

So I guess you choose not to sit down next to that drunk at the local bar? Good. Then choose not to read his articles. People must like to read them, hes still being printed.

There is a lot of stuff in the UDJ I dont like to read, so I dont.

It's more likely that your anti-virus software is mis-dentifying some rather peculiar code that's there that ultimately just redirects you to another site.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the code is (why it's so complex, and triply obfuscated), but when examined, it's really somewhat innocuous looking.

I think it might have been put there to give Bruce Anderson an ulcer, but I don't think you'll get infected by it (it's Javascript, not any Windows code).

Note to Blah (and others who feel skipping Kramer's columns is a solution): It's not a matter of choosing not to read this man's ugly vomit. It's the pain he causes innocent people. He hides behind what Editor K. C. Meadows calls a "nom de plume" and rants ceaselessly. If he's so proud of what he writes and feels it's defensible, why doesn't he put his own name on the column?

Or if, as many believe, he's simply Tom Hines, it was a smart move to list himself in the phone book without an address. Not everyone is as civil as we are.

His painful prose is laughable to people who are not lambasted by him. What about the people he ridicules? Sure, they can choose not to read his nonsense, but others will read it and comment on it. Hatefulness has an inevitable ripple effect that damages the spirit of people who can't fight back. In one of his recent columns he stated that those who disagree with him are stupid.(His word.) He is pompous and unforgivably unkind of those he feels are inferior to him. This seems to be nearly everyone.

Actually, if he didn't cause so much harm, he could be pitied.

I think TWK is very funny (most of the time), but maybe Ukiah is just not ready to laugh at itself once in a while. I don't beleive it is hateful at all.

At this point, yeah, I don't read his column anymore for the most part. But it still bugs me that the UDJ finds it OK to print someone who spews almost nothing but hate speech and dribble.

I mean the guy has bad-mouthed the Ford Street Project, Sundays in the Park, Pastels on the Plaza, all the local art galleries, and people who care about the environment, as well as glorifying drunk driving. It would seem all he likes to do is put down anything and everything positive in our community.

Is this really what we want in our local newspaper?

Has anyone ever heard of playing devil's advocate? or of illustrating the absurd by being absurd?

jeez, Ukiah lighten up already! TWK may or may not be your cup of tea but why do all of you "free speech" advocates want to silence people who exercise that inalienable right? Because their opinion is different?

K.C. has published TWK's real name numerous times, but you don't remember?

Leads me to believe that you don't actually read the article but would rather listen to someone's interpretation of it.

Really, Think, why would freedom of speech or "press", if you will, "bug" you so much?

Note to "Mendo Local": Interesting assumption, but I DO read the UDJ, mostly recently. I don't live in Ukiah but love visiting the area. I would never comment on something I didn't know about first-hand. But, then, of course you don't know me and can be forgiven for your incorrect assumption. The point remans: TWK disparages nearly everything and insults innocent people who try to contribute to their community. What benefits does he provide?

Note to "Hippopotamus": Thousands of people come to Ukiah and Mendocino County every year to enjoy ALL the arts, both fine and performing. The Mendocino County Lodging Association, the Mendocino County Promotional Alliance, the Arts Council of Mendocino, the Wine Growers, and the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors collectively spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to attract visitors.

TWK's assaults give a far different perspective of what people can expect in the county and surely turns away the visitors that are so necessary for the local economy to thrive. Visitors typically do Internet research on an area before visiting (or re-visiting) it. Would his writing encourage you to visit a place?

This is my last comment on this discussion. Enjoy the continuing debate.

He's not absurd, he's just hateful. His writing style and techniques are very similar to Hitler's; esp. his pseudo-specieation of anyone different than him. And there is nothing "absurd" about helping the homeless or battered women or trying to enrich our community through art and other events.

Freedom of speech is fine, and he can rant all he wants on his own time, but I don't think the UDJ should be printing his dribble. Most papers are supposed to adhere to some sort of journalistic standard.(Of course as we've seen recently the UDJ is about on par with the Weekly World News and Star at this point.)

Would the UDJ print a column someone wrote, if that someone were to go on a rant about how we should kill the president? Or would the print something racist, like about how we need to kill all the Mexicans? Of course they wouldn't; and they shouldn't be printing TWK's bigotry either; his sort of thinking is dangerous. It encourages violence, racism, and a whole host of other social problems.

He's no different than Ann Coulter or any other of those ding-bat pundits who thinks its funny to be racist or sexists and to try to portray certain groups of people as less than human. Say what you want but that sort of writing is NOT funny and if you think it is, you've got some serious moral issues.

So, TWK now incites violence, racism and social problems? My Morals are intact, Thank You! I do not drink, smoke, take any drug of any type (including Pharms, except in dire circumstances) I don't steal, rob murder and I don't poison kids with drugs!

If you are incited to be violent, racist or get into a host of other social problems because of an opinion piece, then don't play any rap music or play violent video games either, I don't want to read that you killed someone with your 4 x 4 after you played Super Mario Cart!

Take it for what it is and for god's sake (NO I am not a bible thumper either) get some looser underwear!

Once again, when you don't have a real argument, there is the reference to Nazi-ism (hitler) Racism, and Bigotry! sad, really

Just for kicks, can you actually dis-agree with someone who is NOT a Nazi, Racist, or Bigot?

I can assure you I am None of the above!

Tommy Wayne Kramer was the lead guitarist of a band called the MC5 (Motor City). Tom Hine uses that name to write satirical columns for the UDJ.

He used the name years ago while writing for the Mendocino Grapevine. He almost legendary reviews of local bars were a weekly highlight of that now defunct paper.

Why the anger and ridicule? It is a free country, no one forces anyone to read his column, and if you can't laugh at yourself a little, then who has the problem?
