Full story: WFMZ

I am appalled that private schools are blatantly violating the U.S. Copyright law. Buying one copy of a book and making photocopies is expressly illegal. I can only hope these schools have obtained permission from the textbook publishers to make these copies and your reporter chose not to mention that permission.

Yes, this is true, but, would you rather have the kids learning, or fight over copyright? If YOU didn't make the book, then let's not worry about it, and worry about getting this damned budget passed, then we'll worry about copyrights.

And people wonder why young people have no respect for music/movie/software copyrights... nice example "teachers".

Private and parochial schools get money from the state????? Why is that happening? My tax dollars are going to support a religious school. Since when is this in the pa budget? I do know we transport the kids but giving them, money for textbooks is news to me. I must call my representative.

Also, there are copyright laws and this is serious. The administrators should be admonised just as they would be in a public school setting. Too often the private and parochial schools get the easy way out. Enough.

Yes, there are copyright laws, and you're telling me You NEVER broke a copyright? Look, here's copyright infringement: Microsoft Windows XP! So, that's serious, let's call the police, write a news story on it.

We'll teach kids about copyrights, screw math, science, and reading, as long as they know not to steal other peoples' work, they can be dumb asses all they want.

Are you kidding me? My two children go to a private school and I still pay taxes into my local district! I do get bus service but that is just one small service compared to what the public school students get from my tax dollars. I bet now you will blast me that it is my choice to send my child there so to that I say than let my taxes go to the school my children attend. Haven't you looked into the President's stimulus package and all the extra things and organizations that got a share in that??? The easy way out you must not realize that those schools are in the same boat as the public schools and guess what..... the public schools are doing the same exact coping because they have no consumable books until the budget money arrives.

Just for all you hotheads out there. This is something I looked up on copyright. And for all your information, the schools are only copying the pages until the budget is passed where they will then purchase the said book for what all you hotheads coin as improper use.
What Can Be Copied?
* A chapter from a book (never the entire book).
* An article from a periodical or newspaper.
* A short story, essay, or poem. One work is the norm whether it comes from an individual work or an anthology.
* A chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, periodical, or newspaper.
* Poetry
o Multiple copies of a poem of 250 words or less that exist on two pages or less or 250 words from a longer poem.
* Prose
o Multiple copies of an article, story or essay that are 2,500 words or less or excerpts up to 1,000 words or 10 percent of the total work, whichever is less.
* Illustrations
o Multiple copies of a chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon, or picture contained in a book or periodical issue.
What Should Be Avoided?
* Making multiple copies of different works that could substitute for the purchase of books, publisher's reprints, or periodicals.
* Copying the same works from semester to semester.
* Copying the same material for several different courses at the same or different institutions.
* Copying more than nine separate times in a single semester.

Mom:

The public school I am associated with does not copy anything that violates the copyright laws. It is a direct order from the adm and school board. There are strict guideline policies approved by the boards. Check it out.

you Goofs:

In the front of textbooks, there is specific information about copyright laws and it does not give permiossion for that to occur. Sorry. I do not have a book in front of me but it says it is forbidden to do this.

I thought the private schools used textbooks from publishing companies that public schools did not know about since the kids in private or parochial schools do so much better.

People pay tuition in private schools. Take the money for the books out of that.

I agree with you. Two things came out on this story and that is that the state gives money to private and parochial for textbooks and private school are breaking copyright laws.

Hey you Northampton resident. I pay tuition and TAX DOLLARS. My tax dollars are going to fund your special ed and ESOL kids you probably aren't even tax payers. If I didn't send my kids to private school, YOUR school tax would go up.

Hey just so you know teachers inthe BASD have been copying text books for YEARS. And they still are.

Private school is great. Every single text book series is new! We get a great education and dont have to deal with the behavior probles or the Spec Ed/ESOL. I highly reccommend it if you have the means..........

Justin time:

What a clever name!!! You need help in your sentence structure. I will sent some spec ed and ESOL students to help you. BASD cannot be copying textbooks. it is illegal and against school district policy. You say every textbook is new at the private school!!! Why would you waste money doing that. History books may need to be changed every several years but math is math. What a waste of taxpayers money. Did your kids enjoy the bus ride provided by the taxpayers.

No behavior problems in private schools. Show me the stats on that one.

I am a taxpayer and my kids love the bus ride. Nice new busses with AC and seatbelts.

I dont care about stats for all private schools. Just mine. Paying tuition gives me that luxury.

A waste of taxpayer money is buying the ESOL version of a textbook.

I make it a policy not to argue with people who do not know things about the issue except just what they "hear". However, read the editorial in today's Morining Call concerning inclusion in the schools. It may serve as a means of educating the eneducated on the topic. Of course since your kids go to private school and do not allow special education students (elitist) nor would you want them in your children's class, then you probably wouldn't understand the point of the editorial.

I guess when a kid moves to the US from Spain and speaks only Spanish but has a superior IQ, your private school would not only enroll him, but wouldn't buy him the necessary materials fro a proper education. Very elitist!!!!!

When your kids get out of private school and enter the real world, make sure you explain to them that there are people that are not as fortunate as they are. Some people have to "carry the water" so others can drink.

Did I say they do better ??? I think not. Maybe you should focus your energy on the local and national leaders to take education on and champion for ways to make all the resources the children need available to both public and private. I only say for both because when you and I are in the senior years of our lives they will be our leaders and caregivers. I think I can bet your main goal is that the children need to be a priorty and that we need standards. I applaud your passion and sense of morals with the copyright. I didn't mean to vent on you but man the government is like the army ... "Hurry up and wait!" I just wish people like you (no matter if I agree with you or not) and others would just get involved and get the results our children and communities deserve because they need the passion and drive! Keep the fire up.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Scorpio

Your thoughts turn to the past today, putting you in a nostalgic mood. You're awash with sentimental tears as you dwell on days gone by or gaze at photos of people you'll never see again. However, try not to let this mood of reminiscence turn into a tendency to feel sorry for yourself and therefore to demand special treatment from others.
