I grew up on duff drive in the pleasent valley projects, Then moved off of ruskin dr. in north terrace. My grandparents lived on 17th street. I love altoona, unfortunately all I can think of now is the great food in this town. not really much to do as far as fun except the curve games. I remember going to indian lookout, lakemont park, riding the lip di dip. I remember the mall when it was smaller delgrosos park, meadows ice cream, Dinos pizza, lenas awesome food. Does anyone remember luigettas on 17th? is it still there? I still have relatives on 9th st. Is this area bad?
Luigettas is and always has been on 3rd ave & 1st st. & are in fact still open. The pizza shop I believe you might be talking about is Pal Minos Pizza & also still open.

Grew up in East End in the 60 and 70's.. Stevens Elementary, Logan Jr High, AAHS. Close to Ken's (Mabel's and Fran's previously) corner store, 7 Dwarfs, Miller's corner. I read SRA in a box in elementary school. I played on Gamble Hill and Hench Development long before it had that name. Mr Gioiosa ran by my house everyday. I remember the summer programs they ran at the Greenwood school where they would take the poor kids (me being one) swimming at Lakemont, bowling, play dodge ball etc. and the family of boys from Greenwood, Rick, Nick, Mick, Vick, and Dick. I remember buying irregular Levi's at Schulman's and Roamer shoes at Gables basement when there was enough money otherwise it was the shoe factory. Everyone wore Roamers with dimes in them.
I skated at the skating rink every weekend to "I gotta brank new pair of rollerskates." And tried to play tennis for 25 cents at the new courts on the hill behind Logan where we also would sled ride. I loved the festivals at St Marks where they had gaming and liquor by the drink in the basement and rides and Italian food in the alley. Piranha (McElvey, Williamson et al) played Sweet Emotion every weekend and I followed them to Philipsburg and Portage.
I remember the yellow railroad bus that dropped the railroaders off at 3:30 on East Walton Ave. I walked to Prospect most days and hung out at Wash-Jeff school in the evenings. I did drivers ed in the simulators (that was cool) and drove with Mr Umstead. Took History of Rock and Roll with Mr Gross with hundreds of other kids. I was at AAHS when there was a bomb scare every week and the students staged a walkout to smoke on the portico. And when they made the announcement that anyone who had smoked the pink marijuana cigarettes should come to the nurse. I saw Montrose and the Outlaws in the gym of the old high school. And I remember a few Splash Hops. I did the bump and the hustle at New Horizons in Pinecroft. I drank at the the Buckhorn Inn and Coaches Inn long before I was legal and loved Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band.
I graduated and left in 1977, went to PSU and then moved far away. I miss what I remember but it is a sad place to visit.

Been to Toona-ville for 13 years. I have lived in 6 countries', Never knew a subterranean, Lying, stealing culture of of people existed.

I am 5 years and some 3000 miles away. Among the other 15,ooo people who bailed from Altoona over the 15 years, Anyone who has the ambition and love for their self, children, will leave. Anyone who wants to achieve, and build a good life, leaves that garbage dump.

In 10 years Altoona will be a dangerous, crime ingested, poverty stricken, destitute city and State,

Altoona has really gone to the dogs. Not one thing for kids to do around here at all. Not like when I was growing up. I dont know when the last time was that I saw kids playing kick ball or stick ball or dodge ball. Not allowed to skate on the sidewalks now against the law. No one sled rides on the hill anymore. Hell they used to close streets off to let kids sled. Ramshackled houses closed storefronts and slums.

We are actually moving to Altoona in a week or so to be part of some great things happening there with a church. Was wondering what are some of the needs that the area has? We are wanting to serve where we can, but also want to be serving needs that are not being met.

I moved outmher to greenwood about a year and a half ago and people here really suck, bad attitudes for no reason, scared to talk to new people about pot, lmao. I think its a decent area but very boring... I dont care to go to bars, I would rather sit at home and drink or smoke, cheaper that way lol. I dont know anyone really, well like 2 people and I dont talk to them much. Im a social person but have no friends here and that makes it hard on me. Im 28 yr old male that just wants to go to work, come home hang out while smoking a fat one, but as my luck has it I cant seem to get anyone to talk to me about that cause im new here so im sober now which isnt bad but I like enjoyin life and experience things instead of being a shut in. Wish I had a friend to hang out with, smoke with, drink with, ect.. theres nothing here to do really sit in the house all the time, if anyone wanna hang with a solid person hit me up I could use the company
thanks
