New Mexico Tech Hosts Public Forum On N.M. Energy Policy March 27 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, Macey Center Socorro

SOCORRO, N.M. March 19, 2014 The New Mexico State Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources has set a listening session in Socorro to solicit technical and science-based input on concerns related to energy development.

Discussion topics will include Water Use and Reuse, Induced Seismicity Associated with Water Injection, Hydrology Considerations, Interwell Communication and the Possibility of Fresh Water Contamination due to Hydraulic Fracturing, Stray Gas Emissions, Carbon Production and Sequestration, Advanced Nuclear Technology and Development of Small Modular Reactors, Public Health and Public Safety Issues, and Providing Information to Counties in the State.

The official theme for the New Mexico Tech listening session is "The Nexus of Science and Energy Policy."

Dr. Daniel Fine, associate director of the New Mexico Center for Energy Policy at New Mexico Tech, is the project leader of the new State of New Mexico energy policy, working under Secretary of Energy Dave Martin. The session will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Macey Center on the campus in Socorro.

Dr. Van Romero, Vice President of Research, is coordinating the event.

Secretary Dave Martin will preside, along with Tech President Dr. Daniel H. Lopez.

The Listening Session consists of open questions distributed at the event to an invited audience and to New Mexico Tech students and faculty. Tech faculty specialists in hydrology, earth science, geology and petroleum engineering will present views and comments.

Tech guests include hydrology professor Dr. Mark Person, petroleum engineering professor Dr. Tom Engler, state geologist Greer Price, petroleum geologist Ron Broadhead, and Vice President of Research and physicist Dr. Van Romero.

After the panel of experts' presentations, Dr. Lopez will begin the session with the open questions (about two dozen) and individuals in the audience are welcome to step forward to a microphone and comment.

A stenographer will record everything for our record which goes into the energy policy process. The overriding question is, "What should be included in the State of New Mexico Energy Policy?"

Previous listening sessions have been held in Farmington, Hobbs, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces.
