Silver City police aim to have elderly man's license revoked after fatal crash (4:10 a.m.)

I hate to be the one to pour cold water on this issue of when is it to old to drive. Just yesterday I was at DMV and an old man, had to be in his 90's, not only came in like an hour after I had been waiting, but got dispatched before all the rest of us had been waiting. He behaved like a person who didn't even know where he was at. They obviously checked his vision, issued him his license and sent him on his way. This is not a person who has the ability to make decisions on the road in a running car. There is just no way on this one.

Are they truly so ignorant to think that this old guy won't just forget he had his driver's license revoked? Keep giving him back his vehicle, that's all he needs. Why not petition his family to take care of him? If he has none, put him into state-funded care. It's obvious he is having issues with dementia or some other age related illness. Another instance of waiting until someone kills an innocent person before actions are taken.

It is possible to learn a lesson before it gets to this point.

Sounds like the man has dementia and needs help, people to step in and get him some appropriate care!

Here is what they do in Europe

After your 65th birthday you have to go to the DMV once a year. There you have to take a reaction test and other tests.

My dad is 73 and loves to drive, he had his night license suspended. He can only drive dawn to dusk now. So my mom has to drive. She is relieved, he is pissed and at a whole Europe probably saved a life (my dad can't see in the night, but he would never tell you)

Our neighbor is 90 something. She takes her Lincoln out every so often and drives around the neighborhood. Do you have any idea how scary that is.

Maybe we should do like in Europe and give everybody reaction tests over a certain age.

Go ahead - Rip me apart. But you know I am right!

I do have to agree that we have too many elderly people driving in Las Cruces who really should not have a license anymore.

But on the other hand, my question is whether Mr. German's license would be in danger of being revoked if his last name were Senior Hernandez, and he were 85 years old?

Just a thought!

Just because someone turns 65 doesn't mean they can't drive. I'd like to see a lot of these macho men in their trucks and many moms and lots of teens take the reaction test, too.

If a person is having age related problems then by all means get them tested but don't just assume that when you reach a certain age you need to be tested. I can assure you that many 65 - 70 year olds have better reaction times than many younger people because they pay more attention while driving instead of acting like they are invinceable.

You should get a clue and realize the severity of the "elderly" driver situation here. The use of the number 65 is a good starting place. Maybe we should just have reaction tests as standard for all persons wanting to drive, i'd agree to that. But, the issue at hand here are "elderly" drivers - we're not talking 65 yrs old either. I'm almost hit daily and 99% of the time it is an elderly driver. They have absolutely no clue they just ran a red light, are driving 35 mph over the posted speed limit, and even under the speed limit, nor had an extremely close call. They are far too stubborn and proud to admit to anyone that they can't see as well as they used too, or hear as well as they use too, or even think as clearly as they used too. Because of that, the law must take over.

There are family members that don't want their elderly parents driving, but have no control over it. The law must take over for the safety of everyone!

My question is: Why hasn't this guy accumulated enough points against his license that the state didn't already revoke it?
I've never had a ticket in New Mexico in the nearly three years I've been here. Don't they have a points system? Aren't infractions such as described given a heavy number of points against your license?
My guess is that the state should've already revoked his driver's license.

Where is the FAMILY?

They can revoke his license, but the FAMILY needs to step in and take the keys and/or the truck out of his possession. A cousin once took the keys from my uncle; too bad he had made many copies and continued to drive for months until he depleted his supply (or forgot where he had hidden the rest). The car disappeared after a "fender bender" that could have been much worse.

He is a deadly weapon. He has killed and maimed and will likely do it again. Revoke his license and lock him up for manslaughter. If he killed someone that you love you would agree.

OF course some ignorant fool had to make it about race. He killed somebody and hit someone else, that should be enough for anybody regardless of what his name is.

I have held a NM driver's l icense for about 40 years, had only one ticket when I was younger, but I don't believe that they have a point system.

Really now is this FAIR ?? Mr. German; Just go to a different DMV Office in New Mexico; Then get one of those New Mexico State Drivers Licenses for ILLEGALS; Maybe you can say your a Illegal German or just a Illegal Old Man ?? Their is no different then a ILLEGAL MEXICAN getting A ILLEGAL/Legal NM Drivers License ! Think About it ?? Maybe now the state assembly will vote against Liberal Insanity for ALL ILLEGALS !

I think after the age of 80 they should require you to retake the actual driving test once a year.(Right now itís just the eye test) If it's Mr. Toads Wild Ride then take the license away.

This will also help the families explain to grandpa why he should not be driving. "See grandpa the state even says you should not be driving". Itís very hard for families to convince their parents/grandparents to hand over keys when the state keeps reissuing their license.

This is NOTHING about race, so just drop the race card. Illegal vs. Legal people getting a license is also irrelevant here. What DOES matter is that this guy has hurt INNOCENT people! It does not matter about ANYTHING else. If he hurt people (which he did) then prosecute him. My elderly grandma is fighting us right now because we hid her car keys..... I REFUSE to give them back! She is completely unfit to drive anymore. Plain and simple. His family or friends should have stepped in to help him before something like this happens. More people need to be more proactive. If you see an elderly driver being a complete hazard, pick up the phone and report it! I'm faxing in a form today to the FL Department Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to have my grandma's license revoked. Other people out there should be more observant and do something to at least TRY to prevent a problem. Take out a spark plug, take the battery out, hell I'd even take off a couple tires if I had to in order to stop her from driving the car! Its NOT up for discussion. Flat out, plain and simple.
So, for all you folks out there who get cut off and nearly clobbered on a daily basis, call and report them. If their family won't step in, then at least you know that YOU tried!

Again, it's NOTHING about race, immigration status, etc. So please stop with that crap. And it's absolutely NOTHING to do with the president either!(and NO I did NOT vote for him!)
