Here's a plan. Build another park at Penny Park and have a ten foot high chain link fence with another six feet high round of concertina/razor wire. A huge padlock to be sure the place is locked up by 9PM. Nannycams in the trees and on top the swings, any place that makes sense to keep track of. Plus it helps in case the EMT's need to be called or the fire dept. Not to mention all the employment this idea would create. Then as a side order, hire people who used to work in corrections and security to do security at the park and skatepark. I'm sure the city has plenty of money to spend on mega security for a park for kids instead of on social issues. (not really) It's sad that kids would be reduced to playing in what would essentially be a little kid prison but at least crime would be cut considerably.

I over heard a friend of my teens say that local gangs have a "one up" thing going on who can set the most devastating fire. We as a community should do what the cops won't. Talk to our kids, find out names, and take these punks to the cops.

It saddens me to read all these posts about the police and the sheriff ect ect
and how bad this community is,well first of all for all of those ppl that dont like it here why do still reside here? All this talk about the war on drugs and so on so forth seems to me that you all have lost focus, we're talking about a community park that our children and families help construct and have utilized for play time, parties and even a wedding and to read all the negativity just not good reading.

bring out the cane for these punks, cane the hell out of them... the welts on there legs will attest to the fact that we won't tolerate there behavior. Look at what telling them "it's not your fault" has gotten us! It is there fault. They have brains,(very small) and they know exactly what they are doing. Cops dooo something or the people will. Bring out the vigilante, You don't have to worry about being caught as long as your not drunk driving away from settling a debt that the law won't bother with or don't roll thru a stop sign, both will attract cops faster then a doughnut shop. Gang problem Cane them!

So many people and mostly children contributed to making that park. If it was intentional I hope those responsible will reach into their heart and soul and realize that this may have been the idea of adults, but the children is what made this happen. They collected their pennies at school, at the local stores we had our children put in their change in the jars. Our children wanted this park, because they needed this park. They worked hours collecting and also participated in building it. IT was their park. Something they accomplished and boy was it a huge accomplishment for all our kids and it was supposed to last for generations. They were supposed to have the opportunity to go back with their own children and share the story of how they helped build that park. I hope they realize this is what they took not just from the community but from the children. It was their heart, our children's hearts, therefore it WAS the heart of the community and it's gone. I hope something will reach into the heart of those responsible so they can see that whatever entertainment they got from this took away entertainment that could have been for their own children if they don't have any already. It's sad, heartless, but as Kendra stated maybe something great will happen. Maybe knowing this they too will learn to have a heart. Nothing can break a community as strong as the one it took to build Penny Park, The Community Built Park. I hope we can come back with something even greater. I know my kids will start saving their pennies again!

I understand why people are saying things like this and bashing the law enforcement. And yes it's starts with the voting. But you have to understand how the whole system works too. But it all starts with who is willing to talk at the scene, who is willing to cooperate, who is willing to stick their necks out there and turn bad people in. Whether it's family, friends, or neighbors a crap town will stay a crap town if it's own citizens don't stand up to even their own children, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors and say ENOUGH! People are dying, children are being abused and killed because people don't stand up. They turn their heads and would rather live in denial then blame others for this crap town. It just as much our own fault as it can be an officer who doesn't want to arrest someone he knows, or the attorney who decides to offer a plea deal for lighter sentences to get the win mark on their resume, or the judge who gives a light sentence for a crime that caused so much pain to give criminals a chance to change. It's all of that combined. Silver City is a great town with beautiful people and beautiful buildings, history, culture, scenery. It's not crap. The beautiful people took action and made the park. I wonder if anyone of those making such negative remarks helped build it? Talk to your elected officials, turn people in, and tell your judicial system enough of these light sentences. You want people prosecuted, you NEED people prosecuted swiftly and strictly! You have the evidence all over to show your elected officials their way is NOT working and you know what there are these places all over New Mexico that offer a chance to change and become educated, receive counseling, and even gain valuable work skills. And if they don't want to do this, then it's a place that won't be so friendly but they will serve their time and stay out of the community for a while. It's called prison and you know what yeah, some people need to go there so they can have the opportunity to change. But a "crap town's" citizens have to be willing to do this. And talking about the Crap Town is more of running scared to me.

The New Mexico State Police are the worst in this area. Their main function is to ticket people who dare go a few miles over the speed limit. Murder in this town goes unsolved, but don't you dare go 32 in a 25 mile-an-hour zone!

Yeah, Dont forget all of those Harrassing Road blocks. That is what our good tax dollars are spent on Road blocks, not real crime enforcement .
They forgot their duty to us tax paying citizens "TO SERVE AND PROTECT" not to harrass and arrest...

The cops and Captain Reese, in particular, de4ny the existence of gangs in our community. Didn't you see the front page article with picture of the captain last month. The cops won't do anything about this problem other than deny we have gangs in Silver. WHY???

It is time for the city of Silver and all of Grant Co. to go to city council meetings, Grant Co. council meetings and stand up. It is time: fire the entire Silver City PD, every last one of them. Fire the chief, appoint someone in the interm, hire a highly qalified chief and all new officers, from out of the area. Silver City, you can do it. Don't reelect any judges we have now. Stand up people of Grant Co. The other alternative is do it yourself. Citizens patrol your neighborhoods and parks randomly at night. Call Silver PD and tell them where they can pick up the punks you have beat and hogtied! This is your town. Take it back because the cops won't help. They don't care as it is their family and friends beaking the laws and making people afraid.

It sounds like you're suggesting that the citizens of Silver City form a gang and initiate a turf war. Us against the low life, drug dealing, coke/meth addicted, gangbanger, punks, and just clean house. It's certainly true the cops wouldn't stop us, and even if they did intervene nothing would come of it, that's why the punks get away with what they do in the first place. Technically it would be illegal of course, which could be a problem since management and organization would be needed. Somehow the “target punks” would need to be identified, their deeds verified, and their consequences agreed upon, all of which would need to happen and remain beneath exposure. What could make this feasible is that largely the people of Silver City know who the punks are and where to find them, and given present day electronic communications, a system could be set up to coordinate attacks in an untraceable way. Chances are, after the first half dozen or so beatings the word would get out and we’d see a rapid improvement.
