Fire rips through Penny Park again

A pair of early morning fires started 30 minutes apart Friday - one that destroyed a significant portion of Penny Park and another less than an acre of land near Ridge Road, according to fire officials. Full Story

Hello, I'm a frequent visitor who primarily lives on long Island,New York. My wife and I had a trailer home in Silver city for ten years at one time. We are truly sorry for the 2nd damage to Penny Park. I was just visiting last week, and all looked well at that location. I hope they catch the little arsonist and prosecute him/her/ or them to the fullest extent of the law. You know a New colorful, steel type gymnasium/play area would fare better in Silver, and consider security cameras of the entire area, that's if it's in the town budget ? I wish I had the means to completely fund this project myself, I'd do it. The park is a good addition for your little town ! Thanks for listening, Bob Brand

I too would be very happy to see this worm caught and prosecuted. I disagree that steel play areas and a security cameras would be better. I moved here because I'm sick of 24 hour surveillance and steel bars to lock us in and turn us into prisoners in the name of protecting us from bad guys. I say take the money one would spend on steel bars and put a bounty on his head.

The ones setting these fires needs to be prosecuted to the fullest. This crap of people getting away with shit around here because they are related to So and So has GOT to stop. And close down the skate park until there's some answers about the continual destruction at Penny Park. It's so sad that when people try and do something nice for the kids around here, who is it that is mostly being destructive? I think there's going to have to be some kind of constant security at the park, just on account of the size and location. Pretty amazing that homeless people used to camp down there a long time ago and there wasn't all this arson, before it became the Penny park. Back in the day when there was a swim pool in that area, was there arson like now? This would of been decades ago, but I'm just wondering. Is that area prone to arson or is it just Penny Park and the felons who keep doing this? Or has this town become just another crapden along the border where corruption rules?

Good story Mr. Silva. As I recall, Penny Park has a 9pm curfew. After 9pm there is drug dealing, underage drinking, at least one homicide and fires. It seems that enforcing the curfew who do a lot to deter numerous crimes occurring at this park. I wonder why this is allowed to go on with no enforcement?

Yep. Silver City is a CRAP DEN town near the Border ruled by graft and corruption. If any of you law abiding nice folk think it is going to get any better- think again. Better yet- start looking for somewhere else to live. You are wasting your life by staying.

Way to go, Stay in Tempe. Your so full of crap. Raul is 10 times the person you will ever be. Your pissed because you probably got busted by him. Silver is no different then anyother small town in America. yes we have a few problems but nothing that is out of the norm. Meth and crack are abundant and the war on drugs has been lost, not just here but across america. The Mexican violance is because Americans Use Drugs. So before you start pointing fingers look in your own back yard. The little turd that started the fire should be given the worst sentance possible. This is truly a sad day for Silver. Don't blame the kids from the skate park, I have found that they are for the most part good kids that watch out for the younger kids and respect one another. Spend a day at the skate park and you can see for yourself.

What a hateful thing to say. This community was just fine until all of you transplants moved in, and decided this town needs to be ran your way. Now law enforcement practices nepotism, all anybody cares about is the art district, and when the transplants came, so did the gangs. By the way, good luck job hunting elsewhere.

First I never said anything about the skate park secondly we are supposed to accept drugs because" we lost the war on drugs"? As for the Sheriff he has the title but he's no sheriff he has no leadership skills whatsoever he doesn't even know how to make a work schedule! I bet he doesn't even have any deputies working this weekend cuz his friends wanted the Weekend off. On memorial day we had no deputies on duty cuz they wanted off. Raul is a nice guy but no leader for sure. Oh wait I bet he will have Mile Aguirre working he will be driving a police car in the parade cuz he's running for sheriff and Villanuevas not again. It's sad these guys become sheriff just to get a better retirement instead of actually doing it to make a difference. And Fu elkstine when a meth head burglarized it home o hope the deputies if they show up tell you sorry man we've lost the war on drugs!! I bet u will be ok with that rite! If read ur post on here for ever either you are one of the worthless cops here or one of them including Villanueva is ur best friend. This arson case sux I'm not happy about any crimes we have in our town! The crooks no the cops suck with that said they have nO fear!! Oh yes there are a few real cops here in the shadows of turds

A friend who is a Volunteer Fire Fighter posted on facebook that the police caught one of the criminals who did this. I hope the kid is made into a public spectacle, and the parents of such a monster too.

Funny how "locals" as they like to call themselves, are totally accepting of the thug/gang rule in Silver City and it's the fault of people from "somewhere else" that are the cause of it. Perhaps the fact that a good part of the population of "parents" here are either addicted to drugs and or booze and don't know or care where their kids are. I've seen kids as young as 6 or 7 years old at snappy mart after 9 PM buying sodas and junk food, probably their dinner.
Downtown has become a haven for drug dealers that don't have to fear anything because even the complacent citizens turn a blind eye. The latest street drug fad is Dilata..a synthetic Heroin that they are mainlining. You'll see the glazed look on the faces of the transient types, all recruited by a long time guy that we found out is "from here" He used to sit in front of the food co op, used to wear a Vietnam veterans cap till I called him on it. Always polite, say's " mornin mam" and "have a nice day" then watches for his customers and rushes off to the side streets and does his deals. He was caught shooting up in the Co op bathroom, and kicked out of Javalina when the owner found his "works" in the bathroom there..These may look like just some innocent homeless people, but they are wolves in sheep's clothing. If citizens would start shooting video on their cell phones, let them know they are being watched, perhaps it will get them to move on. Is the drug war lost? I don't know, but I for one don't want to see Silver City lost to thugs, druggies and wanna be gang bangers..Oh, and My Grandmother was here way back in 1918, so I do have a stake in Silver. Anyone ready to step up? If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Call the DEA, the Department of Justice, the FBI..Let them know what your concerns..Otherwise, don't complain that punks rule.

I hate to say this, but I am not surprised. I am a bit disapointed though. I always figured it would burn when I first saw the park. I loved the look, but seeing all of that wood made me cringe. I am heartbroken that some coward decided to steal not only from the community, but from children. That is a low sort of person, er... excuse me waste of skin. This is a small group or an individual, and speculating on blame, well I will leave that to law enforcment to work out. I don't know that I would rebuild, as much as I would just replace with something less flamable, and not bait the scumbag(s) who would do this sort of thing.

HA! In Silver City you can invite someone over to your house, deliberately provoke them to get angry at you, and then shoot them dead, claiming self-defense even if that was your plan all along.  You think a town with no justice like that is going to do anything about petty little arsonists? Dream on.

If you (re)build it, they will come. Don't rebuild the wooden park unless you really like putting out fires. Keep it's former beauty in your memory, but don't rebuild. I remember helping to build it the first time, and was proud of what we as a community had accomplished. It was a thing of beauty, and a joy for all who went there. We had birthday parties there, and watched out children grow up there. We took students there after going on a field trip to Silver City, as a place to eat their bagged lunch, and play before going back to school. It was a beautiful place, and a testimony of a community working together to make something good. I am sorry to see it go, but perhaps it time has come. Penny Park (as we knew it) probably should be put to rest and remain a pleasant memory. I would rather remember it for what it was, and let it go, than see it happen again and again.

Do you know of anything other than traffic ordinances that are enforced in Silver Shitty?
