The Church imposed limitations seem harsh by todays standards. Oddly enough, they are mild relative to current day practices in most Muslim countries. The widow would risk stoning for defying Muslim leaders in a place like Pakistan in 2009. See this link for a related story:

Putting things In perspective, our ancesters of 230 years ago were highly civilized and we should feel proud of their accomplishments.

I missed the part about them being Muslims. I thought it said they werer Puritans.
Oh that's right we are under Muslim rule now!
