You are investigaiting the cause? I would guess they were on the same track heading for each other, but that's just a guess.

The reporter must not have looked at the picture before writing this, there's more than two cars derailed on the empty train! Not just derailed, but sheared off the wheel bogies. It's what I've come to expect from these AP stories though... they never have much useful content. From the damage it looks like both trains were moving relatively fast, the engines hit eachother and stopped, and the ore cars kept going and piled up on each end. I hope the crews are OK, that could have been a pretty big impact.

Duluth News Tribune has a better story than this. Also, not all five crewmen were injured. At least one was taken to a hospital for observation but was uninjured. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/articl...

They used to do this at the state fair before America became an emasculated, whiny, ERA-led society.

"GRUNDY" is not quite with it. Yes two trains collided headon on single track. That is not the cause of the accident. What is the method of operation? CTC (Centralized Traffic Control) or TWC (Track Warrant Control). Did one crew overrun a "Stop" signal? or was there another cause? Let the NTSB do their investigation and stop speculating. The NTSB.GOV web site has excellent analysis of many types of accidents. I use the above terms as a result of 38 years of railroad experience.

i have to agree with grundy, the reason they crashed is they were on the same track heading towards each other. send in the government to save the day.. someone effed up, that's why they crashed. only reason they need the gov involved is so everyone knows who to sue.

Really? I was thinking someone accidentally swerved their train into the other lane. Something is faulty with the train steering :)
