I am 25 years old and will be leaving to India for a business trip on November 29,2009. How can I get a H1N1 flu shot before I leave the United States?

So the supply is way short, doctors at Lutheran Medical can't get the shot, students at CU can't get the shot, but free clinics that will be attended by the only people who have time to go there and wait in line- non workers- and juvies at Fort Logan are getting this? Sachin- quit your job, commit a crime, or go on the public dole- then you'll get your FREE immunization.

Not true, you are part of the problem FEAR tactics should be left up the Republican's they Own the patent.

The vaccine is becoming more widely available and the CDC is deciding who and where it is in the most need.

Sorry to burst your politically polarized bubble, but it is true. My best friend's husband is a pulmonary doc at Exempla Lutheran and they aren't giving them the shot yet. Fort Logan juvies were the first in the state to get it- my mother-in-law's husband is a teacher there. CU and CSU students, where the most numerous cases are, can't get it. The CDC is deciding? Then I question their judgment.

A quick addendum- I really don't want to argue with you over this, Karl, but I think your shot about fear and Republicans was really off the mark. Obama and Kathleen Sibelus are the ones really stoking the fire on this one, long before a vaccine was even available! And then it becomes available, in short supply, not to the people who it would do the most good for society for. Sorry, but I think that's just wrong. Health providers and students who are our future- they should be first.

Children are the most vulnerable and at risk of Death not healthy adults and young adults.

I had read that the 5-18 age group, including young adults, were the ones having the most serious reactions. I am absolutely for protecting the kids, and we have to get our healthcare providers protected, too. Of course, I have a personal interest in protecting my 18 year old at college- I'm a mom first.

Marty- I'm a card carrying conservative, but yikes!

The "Spanish" influenza pandemic of 1918–1919, which caused approx. 50 million deaths (though estimates range from 40 - 80 million, and which affected 1/3 of the worlds population, primarily affected those of healthy stature, with good immune systems. The usually prime candidates for death, the young and those with impaired immune systems, generally survived whereas the healthy essentially drown in their own secretions when their immmune systems tried to eject this virus. H2N2, which surfaced in 1958, and was a direct decendant of the "Spanish flu" of 1918 had a similar effect, but was less virulent.

Every strain of flu is basically the same, but with some major survival changes, and generally gets its "name" (Spanish, Asian, avian, bird, pig) from the fact that the flu virus is transmissible between humans and animals when these "feed animals" are in close contact with humans. The virus transmisses and morphs between species.

Sum total - don't sweat it! If you catch it and get prompt treatment, your odds are greatly improved (though not 100%). And if you don't, you don't.

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Virgo

If the December sales are calling you, you'd better work out a budget before you leave the house. Otherwise, you'll be tempted to use your credit card first and only consider the cost of your purchase later on. Even so, you could track down some great bargains now, provided you don't get carried away and buy items that you don't really want simply because you're astonished by the amount of money you'll save in buying them. But you'll save even more money if you don't buy them!
