I feel that our government has better thing to do then impose their belief into my personal life. I feel that if they have nothing better to do then dictate our lives instead of help us get jobs for the unemployed and helping our economy strive then maybe they need to be impeached or in our upcomming elections we need to get other into office that will help our jobless rate and our economy!

Hmm. Oklahoma may have the highest divorce rate but it's not all due to the people of Oklahoma. I'm willing to bet that 70% of those divorces are due to financial issues, drug issues, and a small percent of cheating spouse's. Our state, very much in tulsa, Is hurting and dying financially. There are no jobs out there for the middle class. Also theres nothing in tulsa to do anymore as a family really thats affordable. Also we are in meth heaven. Many familys are having to deal with that issue. But with all of that and the divorce rate being so high, doesnt matter. If a relationship is to the point of no return only 20% of familys who go through marriage counciling stick together. Either way it's our right to ask for divorce not the governments to say if a couple should stay together or not.

Yea I get a tad well down right disgusted with the great state of Oklahoma, always sticking there noses into others business, this is America and if I want a d_mn divorce I will get one, I also love the fact that they try to play "saints"! Stay out of my personal life and mind your own business and like the one poster posted worry about your own marriage!

I agree. Since when are politicians (as a whole) the ones to give marriage advice? Just another government "Don't do as a I do, do as I say" law.

So the government wants to be Dr. Phil now? Are they really so arrogant as to think couples who are seeking a divorce haven't thought it through?

I know I don't need lawmakers making my personal decisions for me, especially when I hear how imperfect many of them already are. The time frame and the reasons for a divorce cannot, and should not, be legislated.

These lawmakers better look to their own houses before they start interfering in the rest of our lives. They need to turn their attention to the lack of jobs, the economy and the poor education in our state before they start meddling in our private lives. They really better make sure their own marriages are in the right shape because if they aren't then these people aren't going to want someone trying to tell them they have to do this, this and this before they can divorce.

“Please, knock first.”

The divorce stats are probably a bit skewed, anyway. After all, how many OK residents run across the state line to get married because they can marry qicker, but then they file for divorce in OK. I know 2 people that did that.

So if they make it more difficult to marry or divorce here the lawyers and courts in other states will just get the money because people will go somewhere else. How is this going to help the economy here?

So what happens if the counselor doesn't think the couple should be married? Will they be denied a marrige license? Will they be put on a government list somewhere to be monitored for potential divorce? Maybe it could be right next to the no-fly list, a divorce watch list.
Like most everyone else here I feel that this is way out of bounds for the governement. My personal life is just that, personal, and some areas should not be subject to governmental intrusion.
Makes me wonder what they will try to regulate next.

no jobs=stress=divorce.
higher taxes=stress=divorce.

Solve the budget crisis or marriage crisis? Really this is a debate? Idiots....waiting for some Okie conservatives to comment on why this would be important.

The way I see it is like this, I can attend their pre marriage counseling and then if my divorce fails I should be able to sue the state for my marriage failing so that way it is not really my fault. So if they want to stick their nose in my business then they should carry part of the responsibility when it fails.

The churches need to become relevant again and step up to the plate, instead of building the fancy buildings and getting the really cool musical toys and the state of the art gyms. This issue has no business in the legislature.

How many of these politicians have been divorced? Also, how much are these marriage counseling sessions going to cost me?

Certainly we are not the first state to think of this idea.. can we at least SEE if it worked elsewhere before we mandate money spent on counselors?

OK First oklahom needs to worry about jobs or should I say the lack there of. If two people do not want to be in a marriage together who is the legislators to say they should have to be. This counseling is just another way for the state to make money. Just like the children coping with divorce seminar, that couples are forced to go too and mediation. All at the expense of the persons wanting a divorce. As for pre marriage counselling, I think it is a good idea if you want to go. Not a have to situation.

Take a look in your own back yard legislatures before you try to clean up someone elses.. John Edwards sex tape released today...and his wife has decided since that came out she wants a divorce as well, Oh an the judge using sex toys while on the bench, congressman takes a break an goes to Brazil with his mistress, Oh Yeah, I need people like this making my decisions...

This is so the state gov can still spout the "sanctity of marriage" any time the same sex marriage issue is brought up.

Your main problem comes when each time lil johnny knocks up lil susie, the parents jump in and say johnny and susie need to be married so a child is not born out of wedlock. 2 years later, jon and sue are tired of eachother and want out, and they are old enough to really make their own decisions and realize that you can still raise a child without being miserable together.
