Why hasn't "lane splitting" been outlawed in CA? I'm tired of these jerks pulling up next to my car in the same freeway lane. One accidental jerk of my steering wheel and these inconsiderate freaks are road meat! And I don't want to lose time filling out a police report.

I actually saw a motorcyclist showoff holding his cell phone out to text the other day!!! When he was done, he began speeding and leaning into the turns. I'm sure that he really impressed himself. Everyone else just saw him as the fool he is.

Get rid of cars and douchebags like BM... Motorcycles use way less fuel, less space and most car owners ride alone. If a car refuses the owner should be fined, lane splitting is LEGAL!

Too bad, Willy Boy, because I ride in a car my odd of surviving on these busy freeways are far better than yours, so I guess we'll be rid of you instead ... especially if you're splitting lanes like a moronic fool.:)

Lane splitting is fine, what is not right is when you idiots are splitting and then all of a sudden you are afraid to squeeze between the vehicles directly in front of me, so you drop into my lane right on my front bumper as if the lane is yours because you can no longer split it. This causes me to hit YOU or my brakes. Which do you prefer? Friggin' morons. Then when I hit my brakes in order to save your worthless life, all the cars behind me have to hit their brakes, causing a traffic tie up and more motorcyclists then become impatient at the slow down and they start to lane split and then they can't fit and so on and so on until one of you idiots drops in on a guy who WON'T brake for you and then you go down hard and all traffic gets tied up for the day.
Yeah, lane splitting is great. Watch out for me, splitter, cause I'll squeeze you like a ZIT.

I saw this poor person lying dead on the freeway this morning. You wouldn't be saying these awful things and taking it so lightly if you did. Be respectful of every life. It could be you or your loved one next. May he rest in peace!

I am sickened by the careless presumptive and flippantly hostile nature of previous posts. Thank you Nancy - The only one I've seen who displays any compassion. The man you saw was my friend. An extremely decent and capable person. Not one of the yahoos who think they are immune to harm and the rules of the road. I've heard that some witness accounts include a ladder that may have caused the loss of control. Rather than complain about people legally riding their motorcycles perhaps we should be angry with the irresponsible SOB's who are incapable of responsibly loading and securing their cargo. I was nearly killed some months ago by a flying sheet of drywall that snapped off the truck in front of me. In that case I was lucky I was on a motorcycle so I could swerve and duck to avoid it.
He is not the one to attack.
He is missed and the world worse off without him.
Please show a little respect when writing about things and people you do not know.

Not only is lane splitting LEGAL in many cases it is necessary since many motorcycles are air cooled and will quickly overheat in heavy California traffic. Even liquid cooled bikes only have a few extra minutes before they overheat not to mention the fact that the riders get to soak up all that heat off their engines if they don't keep moving and that sucks particularly when we have to wear heavy protective gear in order to stay alive amongst asshole road raging cagers. Heat exhaustion is a real risk that bikers have to deal with. There is also the issue of jerks like some of you posting here that like to tail gate, crowd, cut people off, weave all over theroad, deliberately pass then slow down in front of bikes causing other vehicles to tail gate them and catch up to us and sit right in our blind spots. If you f&@k up and rear end or side swipe one of us or we don't see you and change lanes into you we die and our only defense is to get the hell away from you which typically results in splitting the traffic ahead of us! There is a good chance that the biker who is splitting by you is doing it to get away from a tailgater or a road rager that is crowding them or hanging out in their blind spot which on a motorcycle is almost 180 degrees behind the rider. Rear view mirrors on a motorcycle aren't very effective at freeway speeds since they vibrate that's why you'll see smart bikers doing a "head check" before they change lanes.

I've seen bikers that probably should be taking the bus too. "Squids" as we call them that ride recklessly, discourteously and don't wear proper safety gear. Even if they piss me off I give them plenty of clearance simply because it wouldn't take much for me to kill them in my car or truck. I also block other cagers paths that try to road rage with anyone on a bike, call in their plates to the CHP and testify against them if they're cited or arrested.

By the way I drive a big rig for a living and believe me I make a mental note of everyone of you assholes that deliberately try to kill me when I'm out on my bike and I am watching for you when I'm in my truck just to see how cocky you'll be with 65 tons or more of steel bearing down on your ass when you're driving your little cage like the punk you are! Paybacks are a bitch!

Note to newbie bikers. Regardless of your political affiliation stay way clear of cagers in hybrids or any vehicles that sport an Obamma bumper sticker. Most of them are driven by the most dangerous, uppity, entitlement minded, self loathing homicidal manics you'll ever have to avoid being murdered by.

I'd just like to say that anyone who doesn't know this man should shut their mouths about what he was doing to cause this accident. He was my friend and a wonderful man who didn't split lanes and get clipped by a car. Something went wrong, he hit the wall and fell nearly 4 stories from an elevated overpass to his death. A little compassion and sensitivity would be appreciated. He would've been 41 tomorrow.

And you know this how unless you were on the bike with him you don't know. he could of been splitting lanes most probable excuse or texting while riding. fact is he's dead motorcycles kill people for whatever reason they should be outlawed like most other things that are unsafe and kill people. hell someone should file suit against the motorcycle manfactures for unsafe products you put something like that with cars and big rigs on the road chances are your going to die.

I also saw this man shortly after the accident. i would like to say to this jessie jackson person you really should do more research. there are plenty of other news reports about what happened on the internet. i saw what happened to this man and regardless of why it happened it was a horrific way to die. do your research don't come on a news site claiming you know everything, because clearly you don't even know the basic facts. if you have issues with motorcyclists lane splitting go bitch on a site that talks about that specifically, this is no place for that. get out of your self absorbed world and realize someone lost their life.

I ride and I drive. If I can make some more room for a lane splitter. By all means, I will. I would have to say for those drives that squeeze bikes in intentionally, I bite back. I take it as a direct threat to my life and for all other bikers that have to come across you. If you have had the opportunity to threaten my life, on purpose, on the freeway, I have followed you till perfect opportunity, then punched your mirror off, shattered something, or scraped some of your paint. This behavior is not appropriate if you are not 100% sure it was intentional. I dont recommend this to anyone if you have something to live for. I don't, so I live my life respecting all I encounter until disrespected, then yes I will do something stupid to make my point for other riders. For others like me, porcelain chips broken off of a spark plug glued to your glove will shatter glass with the lightest tap. My life, your money

Sorry, hon, just because he was your friend doesn't mean he wasn't splitting lanes or doing something else stupid. Perhaps if he were wise enough to not ride a cycle, he would have seen 42...bummer in the summer.
