It's hard to believe that the thurston county animal shelter forces people to have to bring in horribly sick and wounded stray pets and won't offer help to those who cannot do it. As citizens of the community we do our best to provide for sickly strays that are "unwanted" out of the goodness of our hearts because a-hole people refuse to take the responsibility of owning and caring for the animal so we as neighbors get left with the task of having to go through the emotional trauma of having to watch these animals slowly die of horendous diseases, wounds and other things.

All we ask is that the thurston county animal shelter take some responsibility and come pick these animals up if they are caught it's only humane! I understand that animal shelters are full and funds are limited but allowing sickly animals to run around neighborhoods spreading disease and allowing these animals to suffer because some citizens cannot afford to drive the animals to the shelter when they are trapped or are afraid to get close to these unwanted pets because god knows what it has is just wrong.

TCAS should do their job which they are obviously not doing and for every stray pet that has to continue to suffer because they won't get off their @sses and pick them up the blood is on their hands.

Shame on you thurston county animal shelter.

Anywhere in Thurston County, if a cat or dog is confined, we will come and get it. Sick or not. I'm not sure of your circumstances but what you are stating here is just not true. Our limited resources don't allow us to track and remove cats that are just roaming loose unless they are sick or injured but if they are sick or injured it's a priority for us to respond.
I'm sorry that you feel this way and I'm not sure of your personal circumstances but don't hesitate to call us when you have a stray cat or dog contained, sick/injured or not and we will come and pick it up no charge.

If what you are saying is true perhaps you had better tell that to the front desk staff because some of the people working there don't understand that or they pick and choose who they will help. The fact that animal services wants citizens to actually bring in a diseased/sickly animal (which is what I was told) is abusurd considering many people have families and don't want to run the risk of catching something.

It's frustrating because you feel powerless to help an animal in need and can't do anything just because of some lady at the front desk is not telling you the truth or twisting things around about your policy regarding strays.

You say you will pick them up but experiences that I've had with this place tells me different.

THIS IS WHAT I POSTED ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE:
Animal Luvr feel free to add to it.

Thurston county Animal control is so disappointing. I called to have some stray cats and kittens picked up that were dumped and they are very unconcerned about doing their job they will take them if I can bring them there but do not want to come get them unless I have them confined in which case they will take my kennels and I will have to go retrieve them, in no way were they wiling to remove the animals from the crates I put them in and just leave the crates and if they couldn't get here before I closed their suggestion was to TURN THEM LOOSE!!!! 2 momma cats and 3 very young kittens! In which case they would never pick them up since they will only take confined animals but my fenced back yard is not confined enough for them... I was also told that I should have called before I put them in crates, I guess we are supposed to know their job before we try to help poor defenseless animals. I am shocked at the way I was spoken to and the lack of caring of these cats on a main busy highway. I will never contribute money to them again but will find better animal support groups to support because apparently animal welfare ( at least for cats) is not high among the two very rude women I talked to!

Agreed Pink Poodle.

I have a sick stray cat that needs immediate attention and was also told that I need to bring it in and they cannot pick it up once I capture it. This poor cat lives every day with bugs flying around it's head which has an open wound and obviously has many more health issues but this shelter and the women I spoke with didn't give a cr@p. Like you said cats are on the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to animals which is sad.

I'm not sure what to do at this point as it's so heartbreaking to see this cat suffer and as a citizen you feel helpless to do anything because those who are "supposed" to help you won't. They say that if you feed a stray cat for so long you become "responsible" for it and I say BULLSH1T! I feed this cat because it hasn ever known any love and if it's going to die of disease or whatever it's going to die at least knowing someone in this world gave a sh1t enough to give him food.

Thurston county can take their laws and shove them right up their @sses. Whats worse is that people who live around me know this cat is sick and won't even attempt to help capture it and take it in. The only thing lower than cats on the totem pole are people.

What do you suggest for people to do that cannot confine sick, injured or dying stray cats?
It seems that Animal Luvr still has the cat that needs help and you clearly state that you will remove sick and injured cats and it is a priority to respond. Why has that not happened?

Also very cool facebook page pink poodle!

I say we start naming names of those jerks at the shelter maybe if they were all over the internet about how they treat stray sick animals they might wake up and not be so heartless.

I understand it's got to be tough having to put animals down and they see horribly treated animals every day but it's no excuse to not help people when they are willing to go out of their way to help get sick animals off the streets.

That being said though it's really the fault of irresponsible pet owners who never have owned a pet in the first place. Things have gotten so bad these days with animal abuse and neglect It's like the holocaust but for animals.

Today this sick stray sat at my patio door just staring at me with flies buzzing around his head.. I about died right there. I knew he wanted me to take him in and help him then he quietly walked away down the street as I watched him go. Underweight, probably from worms and al I can do is give him food and water and try and make his life a little better than it is.

Though I know deep down the best thing for him is probably to be put to sleep. If there is a god he won't make him suffer much longer.

I am trying to do my part to make people aware of the TCAS uncaring ways as much as I can. I understand they have a hard task of keeping up with the strays but I was shocked by the way I was talked to and the advice to turn them loose was more then I could stand. The 2 women I spoke to were VERY VERY rude to me and told me they had other things to do and if I didnt want to leave them in my kennels I use for work I could put them in a box and they would pick them up the next day. I could not just leave them in a cardboard box in the pouring rain with young fragile kittens, as it was one kitten had died. The shelter never even asked me about the condition of the cats. if they had been fed or watered. I do understand that they cannot drop everything to come and get the cats but they were so rude and mean and unprofessional and since this is not the 1st time have dealt with them like this I am very upset and would at least like the people that are dealing with the public to be held accountable for how they are treating people that are just trying to help the animals that cannot help themselves.

I would love to see some actual statistics as to how many drivers this shleter has and how many calls they answer to ona given day and how many hours they spend at the shelter or eating lunch. If they have only a few drivers I can see it might be difficult.

There is no such thing as customer service anymore they all act like the people behind the windaw at the welfare office (not that I am on welfare mind you)

Sorry, needed some humor here in such a dim situation. Yur doing a great job getting the word keep it up.

I know they must be very busy and they have a hard job keeping up with all that they have to do and they can't take care of every animal but I would like them to explain to people in a nice way what the options are for stray removal. And to show some compassion to the callers who are already upset about an animal in need. Maybe dealing with the situations on a daily basis has made them less enthusiastic then I would like. Take care and I hope all goes well with the kitty

Thnx.
I don't think things will go very good for him as he's getting sicker by the day. All I ccan hope for is that he gets put out of his misery as soon as possible which I hate saying but at this point there is nothing I can do. I've fed him for over a year and through the harsh winter and he's survived but it caught up with him no thanks to the wonderful animal shelter.

Good luck with your animals as well and the best thing we can do in defense of these animals is make it known wherever we can about this shelters ethics.

Knowlage is power.

So sorry to hear your stories. You are exactly right about Thurston County Animal Services. They are the least compassionate group of animal caregivers I've ever seen. Most of the desk staff are either outright rude or just indifferent. Their policies are such that they let themselves off the hook for helping almost every animal that needs help. They outright state they will kill feral cats that are brought in and any cat that is sick or a stray will be lucky if they aren't killed within 24 hours. They're nearly as awful to the people as they are to the animals. They appear to make almost zero effort to care for and place animals into homes.
It's a complete shame that an area this big, with such a compassionate community, only has this pathetic government animal control agency to turn to when help is needed.
Animal Luvr, your location is listed as all over the place except for Olympia. Are you in the Olympia area? Is this cat still around (I know your post was a couple months ago). I can help.

Something weird with my location thing it always is never right and can't fix it.

You will be happy to know this little kitty that has suffered for so long is now doing extremely well no thanks to the lacey animal shelter.

After consistantly feeding this poor guy faithfully every day he has really healed up well and his coat is looking so much better.(I give him fish oil to help that). Any injuries he had has now mended up naturally and he even likes to hang out and sleep around our yard!

My dedication for the last year or two has kept him alive and kept him from being put to sleep and I will continue to take care of him the best I can until fate decides it's his time to go. He will leave this world knowing that someone cared enough about him. Cannot get near him or pet him at all as he is still feral but that's ok. I do the best I can with him and he seems very happy now.

Sometime you just have to take matters into your own hands and forget about relying on people to help you because most of the time they simply do not care.

Personally I don't know who I am angry at more the shelter for showing no concern or compassion or @sshole pet owners who leave their pets behind and forget about them to fend for themselves. Both I guess.

I hear so many comments about this subject and none of them good it makes me wonder how come nothing has been done about them, except I called several places and made complaints and I never got any follow up calls, it was swept under the rug i guess. Thank you for your caring response to this forum.

Publicity.

The best thing to do is keep talking about it and spread the truth about these people everywhere you can (including the internet). Don'y bother wasting your time calling people and complaining they don't care which should be expected. The animals cannot speak for themselves so we must be their voice.

It's funny, when you do A GOOGLE search for "thurston county animal shelter" this topic comes up. Do you know how many people probably search for that place?

Yep, good'ol publicity.
