People tend to spend less when things cost more. That's what another tax increase will do, so in the end I guess those politicians will get less by raising them. How's that phrase go, cutting off their nose to spite their face? What's really wrong with this is that 30,000 people (alamo residents, tulie residents, cloudcroft residents) will vote on taxes that none of them will pay.

Since GRT is a tax on business almost no one voting on this will be required to pay it.

Interesting. The folks who regularly post here on Topix spend an inordinate amount of time complaining about Alamogordo - the lack of amenities, the lack of entertainment. Calling Alamogordo 'alamoghetto', complaining about how the town looks is commonplace. Now we have an opportunity to impact the town in a very positive way with minimal affect on our 'taxes'. The GRT will hardly be felt. You folks have to realize (since you're always posting about how smart you are) that we have to acquire the money from somewhere...... Where do you propose we come up with funding to improve the 'nice to haves'? Your well-thougth out suggestions would be welcomed and helpful. Contact your county commissioners. Put in your two cents.... become part of the process. The GRT is a step in the right direction. Read about it. Attend the City Commission meeting on Tuesday at 7:30 and listen to what Tommy Harrell has to say. You might be pleasantly surprised. Why do you always think - and then post - that the 'politicians' are out to get you? The suggestions they have for improvement of our quality of life are usually a result of citizen input - citizens who are willing to pay a little more for an enhanced quality of life.

Come on. It is pretty obvious this is Herrell trying to get the money for the wife's museum. Any attribution of any other factors is just static. Vote based on whether you want to be taxed to satisfy the personal desires of the wife of a Commissioner.

It would be the Tularosa Basin Historical Society museum and not owned by a person.

Why attend?

This is a county GRT and not a city GRT and so why should we attend the CITY commission meeting about this???

The newspaper quotes Herrell as saying the current grt is 5.8125 percent in the county. It WAS until July 1, 2012 when it went up to 5.9375% because the current yoyo commissioners raised another GRT prior to this one. Dont they even know how much they are currently taxing county residents!!!???

Because even though this is a County GRT State law has been confirmed that all citizens of the county ...to include city residents will get to vote on this GRT. Where do you think a majority of the votes are concentrated at?

More or less it is to understand what is going on in County and City politics, a good way to be informed and protect your rights as a residnet of the County or City.

Because if these social programs as Flores calls them need more money they need to work for it just like we have to work for our money. The government wants to take from one to give to another. If I have to cut back on spending, then they need to cut back on spending. Im tired of the the local government taking more of my money so they can travel on my dime to fancy venues, or give to some group. The government keeps growing, the programs keep growing, and on the backs of 50% of the population that is actually working and producing. If these programs or projects dont have the money to stay afloat, then it's a sign they should close.
