If you mean being involved in our community and helping the poor visiting the prisoner as Jesus proscribes, and improving the quality of life for all county citizens, then yes I am a socialist-liberal and I am willing to pay the 1/16th of one percent more on the gross receipts tax, making a grand total of 1/4 of one percent I will help pay for the funding of cultural programs in Otero County.
Fine, then give your own money to these fine causes and let me decide which cause to give my money to. Quality of life for my family is good roads and making sure criminal dirt bags are locked
up! The county commission should focus on roads and public safety and leave the quality of life issues to the churches and perhaps United Way instead of stealing my money to support their pet causes for votes.

It is truly sad that Flores, Herrell and Rardin think so little of the people they represent outside of the city limits. In fact, they obviously do not want to see businesses start up in the county. These kind of taxes affect everyone, not just the tourists, and although it is pennies on the dollar for this one tax, try adding all the taxes up together and then tell me that it is not a big hit to one's pocket book and to the price of goods sold. The editorial from Sunday was right on. Look at how the tax revenues, ie sales, went up on the one tax free day that just took place. A government looking to increase its tax revenues by increasing taxes is doing the opposite. Im sorry that these 3 people are representing this county. They are not republicans.
Will vote NO

These are not Republicans and the local Republican party should be ashamed that they are not saying anything to their candidates/officials. The local party loves to complain about Obama on their Facebook page but the Chairman should know that these three are no better than a Liberal Democrat.

Open your eyes Chairman. These three will go down in history as the worst but they are there until they are voted out, so vote them out!!

Rardin waited to do this tax until just after his primary re-election and I bet he is laughing at all you idiot Republicans who voted for him. He is a genius!!

Unfortunately all incumbants are reelected and people (in the party and not) do not want to say anything to challenge their friends. You never see a party board member out in public to fight a new tax increase.Maybe we can feel better knowing that they wont generate tax revenue by placing higher grts on businesses in the county, cause there are hardly any now and probably wont be any left if they keep this up. People will just go shop in Alamogordo where it is cheaper (less tax).

Vote No on this tax. Here is what the following elected officials have spent in the last couple weeks on travel for themselves:$ 4,600.79 not including air fare:
Susan Flores, Commissioner travel to Pittsburgh PA
Tommie Herrell, Commissioner, travel to Pittsburgh
Grace Gonzalez, Treasurer, travel to Pittsburgh
Catherine Prather, Deputy Treasurer, travel to Pittsburgh and NMAC conference
Ronny Rardin, Commissioner, travel to Santa Fe and Silver City
Warrant/check# 143018, 143044, 143133, 143136, 142878, 142898, 142899.
Just how concerned are these people about spending your tax dollars and raising taxes so they can travel more? How concerned are they about deficit spending into our county budget?

Its funny that almost everyone on here is against this tax. All this commission is doing is putting it on the ballot so that the voters of the county can decide if the support it or not. I think it is wrong to say that the commission is raising taxes if it gets raised it is because the voters approve it end of story.

revenues went to support the indigent fund and County detention center

Instead spending money to put these indigent people in the detention center why could they not set up at tent city for these poor people? You know, like that feller in Maricopa County Arizona does?

If the commissioners didnt support the tax, they would not bother discussing placing it on the ballot. Their excuse is that they believe the voters should decide. However, they RAISED TWO OTHER TAXES THIS YEAR and did it by a vote among the 3 of them. Come on now.

They reinstated two taxes that had previously been there and were repealed. Two years ago we were paying those same taxes that is why it didnt have to go to a vote of the public

The fact is that they want the tax. Otherwise they wouldnt take action to put it on a ballot. If they want to use the logic that the people should decide, why don't they let the people decide other issues on the ballot. How about their spending budget for instance?

The county needs a board that has 100% veto authority over the County commissioners when it comes to this $$$$.

The county should not spend beyond what is collected and received each year.

Today's paper has another article about a county budget error. And we want to consider a tax giving these people more money to manage?
