Ways veterans can help expedite their claims:

• Visit your local veterans service commission. Officers there are trained in which forms are needed for various injuries, and veterans receive about 40 percent more compensation by using the experts.
• Submit a “fully developed claim.” Provide documentation including DD-214, service and private medical records, marriage, divorce and child birth certificate paperwork, letters from friends who will attest to the injuries and disability benefits questionnaires (DBQs) for each illness or injury.
• Obtain medical documents from doctors yourself, if possible. The local veteran service offices can request the paperwork with your permission, but it slows down the processing time.

The Rev. David Brownfield and his relatives have protected and served the United States since the Revolutionary War, but his country hasn’t returned the favor to the Vietnam War veteran.

Brownfield, of Chillicothe, suffers from a neuromuscular disorder that developed during his 22 years serving first in the Army and then in the Navy. He was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, which causes muscle weakness. The disease started as an inconvenience and nearly took his life in 2007 when it attacked his respiratory system, but he was treated by Adena Medical Center doctors, he said.

Since then, Brownfield has fought to get the Cleveland regional office of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to recognize the severity of his disease and compensate him for it. That’s taken years of appeals, doctors’ visits and frustration.

“If it weren’t for Social Security, we’d probably be bankrupt and homeless,” Brownfield said.

The VA took 11 years to compensate fully Joe Helsel, who served in the Army from 1975 to 1995, for degenerative discs in his neck and back, migraines and varicose veins from running on hard asphalt during training. The Chillicothe man ultimately received the benefits he was seeking thanks, in part, to the local veteran service office and hospital, but the time it took was trying.

Ever. Another Drudge nightmare moment from brain dead Ralph. Could you answer this question and enlighten us on your proof that this is an Obama failure. It took 11 years to resolve, and it wasn't resolved by Bush while in office for 6 1/2 years of the 11. It was resolved in the 4 1/2 years that Obama has been President. Meanwhile, you let your diarrhea mind keep posting senseless items to Topix without reasoning, thinking, accepting facts, or investigating for truth to your posts. Your Obama fixation has warped your brain and thoughts. As a puppet and a parrot for the Nocialists Teabaggin Obstructionists, you are the funniest guy on Topix.

If you meant liberals, it is the practice of tea bagging that we liberal straight men don't engage in. Not the tea bags. Many gay people are liberals and enjoy sex with their partners. Liberals are not fearful of gay people. Is that confusing to you?

next. FYI tea is my favorite drink, both hot and cold. And, I always boil my water before adding it to the teapot. If you need any teabags, I have plenty since I always put them in the compost bin, where all old used Teabaggers usually wind up.

Now the question what wedding gift would you give these guys and gals. Perhaps a strap on for the gals and Preparation H for the guys? It is still perverted, I will vote with God.

This is a man who hates you. "the American people are stupid.." A man who will circumvent congress to make war, hug trees and insure his control over you by not letting you have a gun, freedom of speech, due process. Wow did you vote for him? Are you trying to justify it to us or yourself?

Bush kept us safe all those years and Obama hasn't. Obama also extended the program Bush set up that made us safe and took your rights but couldn't stop the Boston bombings.
