They are a committee of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce. Membership in the "Committee of Fifty" is supposedly comprised of representatives of the 50 businesses or organizations that contribute the *most* to the economic community of Otero County.(As an example, the largest employers, etc. are part of this group.)

The "Nifty Fifty" have also had a not so good reputation for "controlling" business here in Alamogordo. It has almost seemed as if it was a group of "good ol' boys" that kept competition from establishing themselves in the area.

Does the group do any good? Interesting question.

The Committee of Fifty has done considerable "behind the scenes" activities that has caused folks to question their very being. They lobby hard in Washington on occasion and their support (or lack thereof) of certain economic development types of activities in town causes some disconcerting types of feelings. They do however, work diligently in supporting our military at Holloman and have long been supporters of "Team Holloman."

The sad part in all of this is that while membership is supposed to be the top 50 businesses/organizations, it is usually only a handful of those 50 that participate in the committee's activities. Thus the chance for "good ol' boy" politics has the appearance of happening frequently.

It's a crap shoot on whether or not their activities are of "benefit" to the community.

They do exist. I met a retired "Nifty Fifty" man a few years back, when I was still living in New Mexico. I had heard the rumors and the stories when I first moved there, but thought it was only a local story, until I met him for myself. I even got the chance to be in their house,(him and his wife's). My youngest daughter was friends with his granddaughter at the time. His wife liked to brag about how "good" she had it and how much everything cost inside of their $500,000 house. That was sort of a turn off for me. I'm just here to say, yes, they are real and they have a lot of money, influence, and power in Alamogordo.

The Committee of 50 is a lobby that exists to assure that Holloman Air Force Base stays in Otero County and thus that Alamogordo continues to prosper. It's really dark and spooky.

Surely the answer to all criticism/cynicism of the committee of 50 would be allayed were they to either open to their meetings to the public or at least publish the minutes.

It was just a group of guys who played poker on thursday nights. I think santa and the easter bunny run it now.
Now its just getting into the city commisdion and using it for their advantage. Ron griggs took advantage of that well. He was si crooked he climbed that ladder fast and made a lot of money off pretty illegal deals. But we voted for him. No one else wants the job, they work for a living. The rest don't want to work..

"continues to prosper". That was sarcasm, right? If not, please source a definition that fits please.
If we had not prospered, we would be smaller than present day Tularosa, which has also prospered because of the airbase. HAFB is the only major employer in the country, outside of government, which is needed to meet the needs of families who are here because of HAFB. The committee of 50 has lobbied to keep HAFB busy with defense projects. Ask anyone at the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce.
