Is it just me or are the city Christmas decorations quite underwhelming?

A few pole lights on Park are a good start but the "city tree" is a dismal embarassment...the huge cedar planted in front of city hall with a single strand of lights...no ornaments, no star on top, no nuthin'. What a joke.

Not to mention NOTHING else along our main drag, Burford Highway. Why couldn't Halpern have encouraged all of his wholesale tenants to make an effort to decorate? Or better yet, Halpern could have done it in the name of being a good corporate citizen. Oh yeah, that's right, they don't know the meaning of being a good corporate citizen. They just want to desecrate our downtown in the name of greed.

I shouldn't be surprised tho...it is just indicative of what a crap hole the rest of this place really is. That tree lighting must have been LaDonna's crowning moment...shows just how tacky and lacking in taste she and the rest of city hall are.

Don't go blasting back about the city being broke. If Donna had taken a pay cut like everyone asked her to, then the savings could have been spent on better decorations. Or collected that $3 million in unpaid fines, or...the list goes on.

Tacky is as tacky does.

You said it "Miss P"! I don't know who disagreed with you, evidently it is someone with zero taste, or the Halpern's had a slow day at the office or maybe Pam saw this and got angry because you said something bad about her boys.

I am new here and just started reading some of the posts on Topix, but it seems to me some people are never satisfied regardless of what is done in the city. It just depends on who is doing it.
If Doraville is a crap hole, what is keeping you here?
Why don't you try for once to find soemthing good to post and stop being so bitter? Christmas is the season for LOVE, Peace and Joy. Look for some of this in your life. I think I have read enough.

I'm stuck here because I thought I was making a good finanial investment by buying here. I would move but am not willing to sell my home for less than I paid for it nearly 10 years ago.

The bitterness is not specifically the Xmas decorations but the incomepetence, stupidity and frustration with the leadership here that leads to NOTHING being accomplished. The decorations, or lack of, just seem symbolic of the mess we have on our hands on a daily basis.

I would love to find something good to post about once we have it. The decorations denote the sorry leadership lack of vision, and poor management. We cannot "settle" with this crap they are providing but strive to be better.

People made a big mistake in the last election and many of us are just trying to point this out so that maybe next time they will give some actual thought to who they elect rather than choosing someone who is "so-o-o-o sweet" and vet the other candidates better

Travel up and down Buford, look at all of the issues we complain about, with documentation, and tell me you are happy with what our leaders are giving us. You may be willing to settle for mediocrity, but not us.

Move Doraville forward and then maybe we can actually aspire to some real love, peace and joy.

Gee, new resident, most of us would move if not for the fact that our homes are worth half what we paid for them. Do you go to council meetings? Probably not. You see, this "accentuate the positive" bullshit is partly to blame for the shape our city is in. No one wants to "make the city look bad". What gets lost in that translation is that when you put blinders on and don't take note of the negative, the negatives grow and grow until you have Buford Hwy and a serious lack of leadership at city hall. By the way, welcome to the city. Sounds to me like you've already been welcomed by the mayor though.

Can someone please explain to me what the deal with Halpern is? I have lived and worked here for decades and am extremely fed up with the gestapo like tactics of this and former administrations, but I miss the Halpern conection. Sounds like a good movie title.
I dont troll the web about stuff, but what little come across my desk is all negative and what i see is all ineptitude. Our nation and our city and its citizens are pretty screwed right now. But you smart people didnt need that observation to know that did you?

Jack Sr. is deceased and the baby Halperns are running amok. Halpern is part of the disease, not the cure.

As I understand it, Halpern has control of much of the property along Buford Highway. Because other surrounding cities have the foresght to ban the outright infusion of massive wholesale, they (the wholesale owners) settle for Doraville where the ordinances are constantly bent to accommodte them. That is why you see such a saturation of wholesale along Buford Highway throughout Doraville instead of retail that residents can shop at.

Because the wholesalers are desparate to find an accepting atmospere, Halpern can charge two or three times the noraml rent. They do NOTHING in terms of working with the city o enhance the Burford corridor and try to meet our standards. They are, in no way, a good corporate citizen. In fact they refused to work with the city on the layout of a new McDonalds resulting in McDonalds having to build their new store sideways to Buford Highway, totally out of context with the city's LCI and architectural plans.

The city, desparate for cash, will do whatever it takes to bow to Halpern in the name of income.

Meanwhile, there is nothing to encourage regular retailers to the city, no one has any place to shop and we find Buford lined with nail malls, lingerie shops, pawn shops, check cashing shops, et al.

Halpern is a leech that has attached itself to the city and what you see driving down Buford is the result.

Yet City Hall and some on council continue to bow to Halpern's wishes/demands. Makes a body wonder what kind of under the table money is being spent for this continued support.

P.S.
Donna Pitman, Joe Cooley, Pam Fleming and Robert Patrick are Halpern's best friends and supporters.

Brian Bates is in that mix too. He has a couple of friends who think the Halperns are the best thing that's ever happened to Doraville.

Why did you move here? Halpern has been in Doraville for a hundred years +- and its not likely they are going anywhere. I'm sure they were here when you come here. You should have done better research on Doraville and found a good real estate agent to help you. For your sake I hope property values hurry and improve cause you are going to make yourself have a heart attack.
And why would Donna take a paycut? Council didn't have to vote themselves a cut in pay, why did they? It didn't prove anything to employees or residents of Doraville. And no more cut than they took, if Donna had taken what they did would not make any difference in how the city does/does not look. What does that have to do with the decorations?

Observer, you just don't get it do you? The council took a cut, some of them two cuts, as a show of solidarity for a bankrupt city. Donna, if she "loves the city" so much should have done the same, was even asked publicly to do the same, but refused.

You have to look at the big picture. People lead by example and her actions showed just how selfish and money grabbing she is. Can you honestly look at what she does on a daily basis and say it merits $70k per year? Give me a break.

The point was the city would have money if they had not frittered away $12 in reserves. They allowed someone in the court system get away with not collecting $3 million in fines and still keep their job. There are many other examples being documented that demonstrate this fiscal incompetence.

The decorations issue was tongue in cheek to show how rampant incompetence is at city hall.

Obviously you are one of Dumya's supporters so there will be no talking any kind of common sense to you.

The council cut their pay IN HALF and now pay for their own insurance. Halpern has shopping centers all over the place, they have just chosen Doraville to take a stand and exert their power. Why would Donna take a pay cut? Well because she can't even compose an email on her own when it requires grammar and punctuation for one thing. I don't have time to list all the other things that make her completely unqualified to run the city.

You are absolutely correct, John. Take away Luke, Cooley and the lawyers, and Donna wouldn't last a day and people could see her as she really is.

Interesting that before becoming mayor, she didn't have a pot to pee in and now she is on her second Lexus and enrolled her daughter in private school. She must really know how to stretch that $70k per year.(wink, wink)

As long as she is at the helm, the city that she professes to love so much wlll continue to spiral downward.

We really can't afford her style of leadership for three more years. She needs to go.

I get that you like to keep crap stirred. I get the fact that your candidate did not get elected. I know when two of the other mayoral candidates was asked if they would take a pay cut, they both said NO. I would guess the other candidate would not have taken a pay cut either.
we ALL know who the two council people are that took a "pay cut" but it was only $120.00 the next pay cut was kinda forced on them by the two who had reduced their pay by $120. Ms Pachuta told them she could not afford a pay cut with as many meetings as they were holding. She was the only one who voted against the cut.
Here's an idea for you, why aren't they paid just for the meetings they attend? Bates would have a smaller check.
However the mayor chooses to spend her money is nobody's business. She is not required to take a paycut just because some on council 'ask' her to or some bitter residents ask/demand her to. Find something to make yourself happy
